As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I thought, “That’s a beautiful sweater and the color looks so good on her!” But then I am a bit obsessed with green 🌲🌿🌵🌳🌴🍃🪴🌱🌾
Thank you for putting together this video. I really think it is important to share not only what's new, but also follow-up, talking about how those new plants actually performed over at least a 3 year period in residential landscapes... I really would consider doing more of these kinds of videos, highlighting plants that not only look amazing but actually perform, 4-season, and can put up with just about anything.
I bought a few Prince Tut last year. They were so cute in their small growers pots at 14" tall. I planted them in 12" containers and holy smokes did they take off, which was great, as I found myself adding a few stems to most flower arrangements I made. This plant was so impressive that I decided to overwinter them by sinking the pots in large plastic storage bins and maintaining 2" of water at the bottom of the bin. So far so good. I didn't want to be without these this summer!
Hey, Erin! I loved this video for so many reasons-packed with good information, deer resistant plant highlights & tips on how to make our gardens both low maintenance & beautiful. Thank you and more videos like this please! 🤗
I to am taken by the sweater the background artwork the soft lighting. All the colors look so beautiful together. What a lovely spot. And Erin looks beautiful. Just add a cup of coffee.
Oh my gosh, you just read my mind on the spireah! I thought that exact thing and I'm glad you mentioned this because it does look beautiful! The color looks so vibrant!
I love quickfire hydrangeas! I think their foliage is much nicer throughout the growing season than some of the other panicle hydrangeas, and it takes on a nice fall color here too.
I can't say enough about Spirea. Everyone that sees it in my garden beds wants to know what it is, it's so common yet uncommon. Lot's of different colors as well. Nice back of the border small shrub.
I used Prince Tut as a thriller last year in my front porch pots. It was an experiment because my house faces north and only a little direct light in the morning. They did great! Planted them with supertunua vista bubblegum, vista white, and bacopa. Didn’t pull them until October. We also used them in our subdivision’s pots which are in full sun and no drip. They turned crispy in August, definitely need consistent watering here in Michigan lol. Great info ☺️
I found some King Tut on clearance last year and boy, did they recover. They grew in containers and towered over everyone and everything. So impressive. I’m actually overwintering them successfully (ATM) and am going to give them even more space next year. Love them! And I started little bluestem from seed to add to a field we’re hoping to naturalize. They were gorgeous, even on a tiny scale. (Happy to see Fergus 💚)
I too found King Tut on clearance in July and planted them in one large container with white Diamond Euphorbia around them. Wow... they grew 3 feet tall and neighbors stopped to ask what they were. I cut off each dried flower head and tucked them into my Christmas tree in December! That bargain went a long way! Erin's video here was very helpful and well thought out... great info details! ~ Stephanie
I live in Minnesota and have three Quick Fire hydrangea trees. They are now approx. 6 ft tall and spectacular! They are hardy and have done well in our harsh Winters. Can’t wait to get a Little Quick Fire this year.
Fabulous !!! thanks for sharing these great specimens and all the info that comes with them. And thanks for the shout out to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia (UGA Trial Gardens) - down here we are no only proud of our national championship football team, but the gardens and hort school at UGA !!!!
Thanks Erin, on all this year’s picks. Haven’t been thinking about garden planning for a few months now. We are under a good blanket of snow, but starting to think Spring and gardening. Thanks again for sharing this years picks. 👍❤️😊
I just watched your “live” post when you were enjoying the gin and elderflower tonic…….my favorite drink too, I’m crazy about Grey Whale Gin. If you haven’t had it yet try it! Of course a squeeze of lime too😀 I’m a gardener in Southeast Michigan along the St.Clair River. They say zone 6a. I’m sticking with zone 5…anyway I am so excited to have found you and Laura. We live on 20 acres so I have lots of room and lots of deer…I have a hoop house I heat all winter and start my seeds out there as well. I over winter my “big girls” in there, which makes it possible for me to survive the winter!. It’s refreshing to know there are people crazy about gardening like me out there!
Erin, thanks for the video. I think I am going to try the hydrangea you featured in a container this year. I loved the pictures of your garden-so nice on a winter day. As an aside, I am glad kitty got some air time-Otis & Dorothy usually steal the show (yes, they are adorable, but so is kitty).
Ok, I went out and bought LOTS of flower seed packets today! Many colors and sizes of poppies, zinnias, and many more. Now to be patient til mid- end of March to scatter the poppy seeds. You inspired me to try poppies, I hope they like it here in W Michigan.
Thank you for all the great information Erin! I've fell in love with the Little Quick Fire when I saw it at a nursery last year. I really need to find space in my garden for one.
I can definitely confirm the awesomeness of the double play doozie. I got 3 last spring and they didn’t even bother with the “sleep, creep, leap”….they came out leaping! Tripled in size in one season and never stopped blooming. Just gorgeous!
I always love to hear about perennials that you find reliable and why they work in your garden. Hopefully, I am able to locate some as spring arrives. Appreciate so much your channel and the topics you share. It inspires me to discover and attempt to grow new plants.
I purchased the Peachy Keen verbena last year! One of my best plant purchases! Very vigorous, despite my 8b central Texas zone! The ones in pots did better than the ones in the ground (sticky clay soil). We had pretty mild weather through December, they were still going strong! I pruned and divided them, all 10 made it through the winter in their cans! I originally bought 4 pint size can plants. 😯 I'm able to share with friends now!
SUPER excited about gardening this spring/summer!!! (nice 12" dump of snow here, SW of Cleveland, OH, 3 days ago. Yay!!). GREAT information in today's video...thanx!!! Any chance of more "Wine & Weeds" this coming year? (may I mention dandylion, nutsedge, Shepherd's purse, and - AAARGH! Dare I say -- poison ivy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Love you much!!
Great video, especially on this snowy day we are having here in Illinois. This will be the year I plan on getting some mountainmint plants, if I can find some. I happened to plant a Little Quick Fire last Summer, love the lacey flowers on it. I had Verbena Meteor Shower in my garden last year, fabulous! This Spring I will try another Verbena Rigida called Polaris, from seed. Hopefully I can grow some.
Great review, Erin, and I'm so impressed by the way those Latin names roll off of your tongue! Can't wait to find peachy keen verbena this year. I love all of your informative videos....and your fabulous green sweater! 💚
Love that you highlight these plants of the year. Last year I bought the Calamintha Montrose white after watching your video. Love the plant, such a unique white. This year I will be buying the Little Blue Stem, have been hearing a lot about it this past year, looking forward to having it.
Well Emily Knetzer I was going to say the same thing. Love her sweater and its color! Ha! Really appreciate this video on the categories and the plants of the year, etc.... Very Helpful & Inspiring!
Such a great video! I've got to watch it again with a pen and notebook. So much great information, new plants and I always appreciate your recommendations.
This makes me so excited to start growing spring flowers. Thanks for all of the great information! However, I had to go back and start over when about half-way through because I had been so distracted by looking at all of the lovely greens in your sweater and background - my favorite colors!!!
Mountain Mint is one of my absolute favorites for the garden and for foliage for flower arrangements, I actually had a hard time finding it for a few years but now I'm seeing it more widely available. So glad it's getting out there for how great it is!
Hi Erin! So glad you mentioned Mountain Mint because I was given a packet of seeds for my birthday last year and I had never heard of it before. Now I'm excited to start the seeds this year! Thanks! 😊
I found Mountian Mint growing in one of my pastures last year. Only one place on my farm, so it isnt invasive. I'll say I was smitten! The plant is unusual, gorgeous, and absolutely the most pollinators I have ever seen on a plant. I took several cuttings.
Verbena bonariensis seeds like mad (and the mother plant comes back reliably) here on the border of 5b/6a, but I wouldn’t be without it. Love the color and shape, and it’s absolutely dripping with bees, swallowtails and monarchs at all times. 😍 Great lists, thanks for sharing!
I just planted bonariensis last year in zone 5a.... I very much love the effect on the bees, the height and free wiry shape. Hopin for the best for reseeding!
Great video! Your knowledge is amazing and you always explain things perfectly for us to understand. Looking forward to seeing Your new garden near the road..is it year 2 or 3? Happy gardening..keep your videos coming..love them.
Thank you for this Erin! I just added some new things to my list, like Prince Tut and Mountain Mint. I was excited to hear you say that about Spirea, I bought one last year, that probably gets more shade than it should but it was so beautiful with the multi color blooms. They of course start with tiny green buds which are also pretty and they bloom with a bright pink and yellow mix. I have never tried them before and now I’m hooked. I’m happy to know they are better performers these days. I didn’t know anything about them before last year. I’m so excited for Spring I can hardly stand it!
Flame Purple is your Mom’s phlox. I have these and they literally glow like a pink highlighter. They appear darker purple in the morning then brighten up as the day heats up. Love these! Also, I just love the Blue Kazoo spirea! Love your channel💚
Hello Erin, thanks for the great information! I am particularly interested in looking into the creeping phlox. When I attempt to grow lettuces, they are so bitter, so I gave up. Thanks again!
Thank you for all of the great info, Erin! I know a lot about cut flowers but I need to up our home landscape game and I picked up a few great ideas from you to try!
Loved this video! So helpful to hear your experience with growing these featured plants. I’m in zone 5b, Ontario Canada and have had great success with Quick Fire hydrangeas. They have strong sturdy stems, lots of blooms, rich green foliage and the fall colour is beautiful. Mine get full morning sun and afternoon shade and they thrive. I plan to add Little Blue Stem grass this spring….I love that it’s native and has great colour. Not plant related, but need to mention how fabulous your green sweater is….looks wonderful on you! 💚
My builder did exactly what you said! Stella Dora dayllies and boring lavender spirea…tore out the ones in the full Sun but still have ones on the side of my house…bright side is as you said, deer don’t have any interest in them…by the way…love your sweater! Great color and style!
Lol 12 inches of snow on the ground but yes. Always looking forward to planting my garden mid May. I try hard to plant lower maintenance plants because my front garden in west facing and HOT in July and August and typically for those months I have to do most of the watering. I can’t always rely on rainfall.
I like phlox but the deer won’t leave mine alone even with spray. I grew verbena bonariensis last year and I loved it, doing it again this year. I’m doing the hoary mountain mint this year too, so excited!
"your deer may vary" is the best garden quote ever.
Erin, Have you ever been told Green is your color? Your eyes sparkle in this green sweater.
I noticed that as well, Erin looks amazing in that color and loose sweater.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I thought, “That’s a beautiful sweater and the color looks so good on her!” But then I am a bit obsessed with green 🌲🌿🌵🌳🌴🍃🪴🌱🌾
Omg I thought exactly the same thing 😂
Yep, Erin, green is definitely your color!
I want to know where she got it from!!! 😁
I thought the same, too! green is my favorite color
That green is simply beautiful!

When I bought my house the only landscaping it had were two spireas and daylillies lol. Amongst the 25 oaks trees.
Girl!!! Green is your COLOR!! 🙌🏻 Love videos like this! Thank you!
SO Good!!!!! And where is your sweater from?!?! Luv it - Perfect garden green💚
Hello 👋 dear, how are you doing?
Thank you from Melbourne Australia wish we could get these here!
Oh my gosh, you just read my mind on the spireah! I thought that exact thing and I'm glad you mentioned this because it does look beautiful! The color looks so vibrant!
Love that shade of green on you! Thanks for sharing these other organizations!
I am having such an inspiring and enjoyable time binge watching you after finding you through Jim!!! Thank you soo much🙋🏻♀️🪴💕🌸☀️
I love quickfire hydrangeas! I think their foliage is much nicer throughout the growing season than some of the other panicle hydrangeas, and it takes on a nice fall color here too.
Thank you so much Erin for your research! Much appreciated! :)
Great video Erin! Plus, I love your green sweater- you are so pretty in green! Imagine that! Spring is coming 💚💚💚
P.S. We have blue stem growing wild on our property (Iowa) It is beautiful!
LOVE verbena!!! I have grown a light purple striped verbena the last two years and have been happy.
Hahaha kitty cameo. Great video Erin - can't wait to shop for some of these. Thanks for the tip- I will have to try growing some greens this year
I have 2 little quick fires and my favorite season for it was Fall. Its leaves turned the most beautiful bronze, glittery color!
I can't say enough about Spirea. Everyone that sees it in my garden beds wants to know what it is, it's so common yet uncommon. Lot's of different colors as well. Nice back of the border small shrub.

Great video and love the channel. I like that you share contents that a gardener would normally not find. Getting excited to start digging.
With so much snow in western NY, and more on the way, it seems spring is still a long way off. These videos sustain me until I can get planting again!

@@TheImpatientGardener great, thanks 👍
You look so beautiful in green!!
Lol 12 inches of snow on the ground but yes. Always looking forward to planting my garden mid May. I try hard to plant lower maintenance plants because my front garden in west facing and HOT in July and August and typically for those months I have to do most of the watering. I can’t always rely on rainfall.

Such a joy and always love the information you share. Keep making videos for us!
