  • Oli heads to the cabin and takes time to talk about the dangerous mistake he made that got him a helicopter ride to safety on a routine visit to the cabin in Chase, Alaska. This is a bit of a different video but we thought it would be fun to listen to and hopefully keeps someone else from making the same mistake. Thank you for watching and take care!

    Hi Oli, what a story, that is a real Alaskan story, you did everything right to save yourself. At least you had M&Ms and milk. When I am out, I always keep my back pack on with all the necessities no matter what. I for one, would like to hear the rest of the story on going back and getting your snowmachine and sled. I'm glad you knew what to do.

    Oil, thank you for sharing your story. The experience you shared is the very reason why I didn’t choose a cabin off the road system or one with a water crossing. Too many times when overlanding I had become disoriented and essentially lost on a random trail where it took me a day’s worth of driving to find my way out all while rock climbing in my Jeep. Luckily I had my Jeep for shelter. I can’t imagine being in the elements in the middle of winter like you were. This is a tough situation to be in but important lessons learned and valuable to share. Thank you for sharing with everyone. Glad you made it out safely!

      Thank you very much for your comment and watching the video !!! wether to have a cabin on the road system or not is definitely an important decision , it never has been an issue until then , I learned my lesson ,
      I sure hope the video will help some people to decide which route they want to go before purchasing land for a cabin .
      Hope you have a wonderful week , be safe

    Oli, Alaska is so beautiful and so deadly. I've been in your situation a time or two. Panic is not something we can control, but it is something you recognize the more it happens. Sad, but true. I've been lost, so far out with out cell service, pilot not coming for another week. I wasn't alone. Cutting alders all night to keep the fire going, was crazy, and yes alders will burn or smolder... Your experience with water in winter, you are lucky to be here telling the story!

    Amazing story, but I need to know how you were able to retrieve your snowmobile and sled. The problem with going to a remote cabin in late winter is the accumulation of unpacked snow makes it near impossible to travel. You pretty much have to make an effort to make the trip before too much snow has a chance to build up.

  • @curmudgeinnak
    @curmudgeinnak 8 месяцев назад +1

    Not a fun thing to have happen. I rarely venture out in the dark on my snow machine. We enjoy your videos. We are about 13 miles north of Talkeetna up the tracks. I am slowly working on getting a trail into town from up here. Currently no trails for winter or summer to town from our location. Stay safe out in the bush my friend.

    Wow Oli quite a story indeed! It's amazing how we can enjoy the beauty of nature, and suddenly find ourselves a situation. You did the right thing building a fire and trying to figure out what to do next. Sometimes our anxiety can overwhelm us and create more problems. A good compass and getting your bearings is essential. The snow and night were definitely against you. But I'm glad you made it out okay and you lived to tell a great story and a good warning to all, that nature can be beautiful, but it can also kill. Be safe my friend.

    So important you shared this! I was raised hiking and camping. My grandpa was trained in mountain rescue so I think I had a bit more smarts than the average person. So one day living in central Florida I decided to take my young boys and our 6 month old puppy on a hike. I let everyone know where I was and when I planned to be home. I packed lots of water and food(lunch and snacks) I had a map of the trail which was about a 7mile loop. Off we went. I looked for bridges and things like that and compared to the map! We were making great time. Until we weren't. I realized after an hour or more after lunch that the map was wrong. Way wrong. I had been using water based on where I thought we were. Now my kids were tried, the dog was tired and instead of being over half way we were no where near that. My water running low, I started to panick. I immediately turned us around and headed back. My biggest fear was that we would not have enough water and I couldn't carry any of them. That panic and fear is real. We made it out, all was good but I talked to my grandpa later about it and he said never to trust a map! Lol So no matter how much you know, things can happen. It's humbling. So sharing your story maybe will help someone else. My grandpa told us that the #1 people they have to rescue are usually college age boys. Lol Glad you were rescued! Love those rescue guys!❤

    hi you two, omg what a story! You are a good narrator too. I was anxious, I couldn't wait to find out the ending. I would like you to tell us in another video, were you very far from the cabin? How did you get your sled back? Was he far away in the middle of the lake? I'm very happy that you escaped without injury. I knew you would stay calm because you are an airplane pilot...I'm glad you shared that with us. Be careful both of you! Quebec Canada

    That's when your Guardian Angels were working overtime. You're fortunate you had cell service. Did you have to pay for the helicopter ride? My brother and his snowmobiling buddy got caught in a blizzard and had to stay the night on the mountain. Earlier that day they helped rescue a rider who got caught in an avalanche. They stayed behind to try and unbury his sled and bring it back to the lodge but were unsuccessful because of the storm that blew in. It can happen so fast! He texted back and forth all night using his Garmin Inreach.
    Thanks for sharing your story and letting it be a lesson learned for all of us!!

      @@NORDLAND49 shared this video with my brother in law he had a very similar experience during a night ride into his cabin (NW susitna area) overflow and deep snow no snowshoes he did manage to make it to his cabin but was very wet from sweat and the overflow.
      We were watching his inreach track and knew he had trouble but was making progress and saw he was safe at the cabin He used his inreach to message a friend with particulars of the situation and that friend rode in during daylight to assist with recovering machine. He had been able to walk out to his gear stranded on the lake and bring needed items back in a small sled.
      Your video brought it all back to him as though it was yesterday.

      @NORDLAND49  7 месяцев назад

      The time I was rescued there was no dog with me , on the re-enactment , our dog ( Pippen ) was safely in the cabin enjoying our bed 😄😄
