Sarah, I've learned (the hard way) that a propane torch to a bolt for about 30 seconds with penetrant fluid keeps me from snapping off a lot of bolts. Also wending on a bolt for a few seconds helps tons as well. I've had bolts that have broken off and when I welded a nut to them, the heat was enough to break them free.

Transmission, maybe soda blast prime and paint. I just did an LS engine, lots of aluminum, I soda blasted most of the parts, then used an aluminum primer and dupli-color heat resistant paint. Looks great. You have to buy specific aluminum primer (zinc chromate). I would guess duli-color makes a nice silver paint. probably a lot of masking but it should be doable.

I did my own hot tanking at home. Fill all the coolant passages with CLR and cleaned everything out. I have the 4.0 sohc motor with balance shaft. Debur the block, cleaned up oil passages and casting flaws. So yes it can be done and on a budget. Although I don't have video I have pictures of all the assembly with the truck is up and running I do have a sound clip on my channel. Contrary to what many say the engine has potential. A racing team won pikes peak in 2007 with the same engine. Not so much the OHV they're not as rev friendly

A tip for Sarah. So you don't always tear off the screws. Are there inductive loops to heat the screws. this makes room for the screw in the thread and it is easier to loosen rusted screws. Heat-up time approx. 1min. If you don't already know that.😉👍🇩🇪

Death to Ford Power Steering pumps!! 😆. My contour had a drive belt and an "accessory belt" for water pump/ac. Unbeknownst to me the accessory belt snapped and car overheated and blew the head gaskets. in the GM car review the other day, the tight engine bay also brought me back to the Contour ... TIGHT space indeed.

For Nilfisk alto pressure washers you can get a wet blasting accessory it's like 50-80 dollars. Perfect for doing rims yourself. Or in this case gearbox and transfer case. I have only used it with sand. But I guess you could use glass also. Maybe sand first and a final passwith glass. As you can't recover the media you use.

Hey Sarah. My suggestion for the gearbox and transfer case ... um ... case is to give it a careful power wash and just go at it with a mini wire brush and white spirit (or mineral turps for you in Americaland). The turps will just cut through the grease and aluminum oxide and leave a really nice 'patina' sheen. It'll take bloody ages, but you'll save a fortune and it will look great.

These engines seem to share a common flaw. If the main bearings get just 5 to 10 thousand off from wear, They can start leaking oil like crazy. If it were me, just so I would know, while I had the engine out I would go ahead check main bearing clearances and make sure they are within spec. You don't want to find out after you put everything back together, that you've got to pull it out again. I went through this same problem with my truck. It had 52 thousand miles on it when the main bearings got just a tiny bit loose. It wasn't even enough wear to affect oil pressure. But it was enough that it kept eating through rear main seals. It went through 3 rear main seals before I finally had it fixed correctly.

If you don’t soda the gearbox the only real alternative will be wire wheels and bits in a drill for cleaning or 3 hours by hand with sandpaper the whole unit then prime and paint
Masking tape the labels first then speed tape on top of the masking tape to protect the labels if blasting

Love this series, I'm on my 5th Ranger.
With regards to the alternator, I wouldn't replace it, or at least, not turn the old working one in as a core (keep it). I can't speak specifically to that vintage of Ford alternator, but in general, there has been a rash of junk replacement alternators, specifically Ford ones. Not sure if it's import regulators or what.

Definitely put fresh freeze plugs in the engine throughout just saves you a lot of aggravation later. Secondly send the fuel injectors out to have them thoroughly cleaned the 2.9 is in the 4 l European V6 is were prone to having injector plugging problems on high mileage or vehicles that were driven only short distances. Also check for bearing wear and while you going to put on new gaskets on it slip in a a new oil pump for only add to the quality of what you're doing. Just a couple of thoughts.

For cleaning the transmission and transfercase housings. After pressure washing them. Swing by the local Home Depot and get a garden sprayer and muriatic acid. Acid in the sprayer and spray the outside of the case, let sit about 30 minutes then rinse with water. Can take multiple application for heavily oxidized and oil stained areas.

I can attest to the heat hardened plastic: I bought an '04 Forester XT out of Dallas about ten years ago, and while the underbody was beautiful, so many of the small hoses were crusty, and the electrical connectors under hood were brittle.

Something that may help you with cleaning stuff (like that motor on the engine stand). I can't now remember what the thing is called, but I got it from Horbar Fright. It's a pressure wand, connects to your compressed air, and has a plastic tube you stick down in a cleaning solution (Purple Power, Super Clean, etc. mixed in HOT water). As you spray it, it sucks up the cleaner solution and blasts off dirt, grease, and grime. Seems like I paid like 12 bucks for it. It works like a champ! Shoot it all down with some degreaser first, let it sit a half hour or so, then blast it off with that spray hickey thingy, and then rinse off.

Pneumatic Engine Cleaning Gun. Finally found it, and it's 10 bucks.

That soda blaster would be more effective if you brushed on some paint stripper first. Then it would easely clean off the sticky paint aswell as binding to it making it easier to clean the mess. Also the soda dissolves with enough water. The soda blaster would have been great to clean those valve covers on the Celica engine.

Change the freeze plugs in that motor while you can and before you paint it 👍

The look I know you're going for on the aluminum pieces can be had with a vapor blaster, not so much with dry ice. Perhaps you could just send the casings off to get vapor blasted since there is no one local. I see there are a few places in Phoenix that can do vapor blasting.
