    Owning an early 911, I can relate to how he has to play the wheel so much. Even in normal driving at highway speeds on twisty roads, you constantly have to steer the car to place it correctly, and keep it pointing the right way.
    The driver here appears to be a master of it, at any speed!

      @Southern Fun Its a joke. In Fast and the Furious they say that the main character is "Granny shifting, not double clutching like he should" after he loses a race and almost crashes his car.

    • @treatb09
      @treatb09 4 года назад

      one thing i've never understood about double clutching is that you are doubling up your neutral drive. i'm not experienced in these old cars, and have really only taught myself. but you clutch to take out of gear, unclutch at stick in neutral, rev match, then clutch to put in your gear. i've always mis matched my clutch to throttle, so that i catch my throttle right as i'm letting off, just enough to rev, and downshift. its the quickest way to down shift, but it hurts clutches, and i don't really know how it would impact these older cars. i'm sure it'd ruin them. but i'm quick to say the least...either way, you never see someone dancing in their 911 around turns. it takes great skill.

    I've raced a '67 911 at Silverstone and Snetterton and can attest to the 'always sideways' motion of the car as seen in Caresani's driving. Just a dab of brake and the rear steps out, but oh so easy to catch and steer thereafter on the throttle through the corners. Trick is to get the car to rotate into the corner but I ran out of skill before managing that! Wonderful cars to drive and eminently 'checkable'. Just try and forget the car's value when turning in!

    Spa is a very fast course. I’ve driven many short wheelbase 911s over the years, they’re very good at short, twisty courses. The high speed stability was always tough. That’s why Porsche lengthened the wheelbase in ‘69. The guy piloting this run is a grand master with a 911.

    Its an early 901 gearbox, 5 spd, dogleg pattern so he's mainly in 2nd thru 5th gear. Porsche didnt build a 6 spd box in this period for these early 901 models.
    You can tell the body is an early 911 model as it has an opening vent window on passenger side. Maybe a 65 to 68 model ? All these years were fitted with 901 model gearboxes which came in 4 or 5 speed.

  • @aaronjohnmaughan

    Notice how corrections are made without a full lift from throttle, and some even involve applying more. This is done to maintain and manage weight transfer, which is a most critical skill when driving a rear engined car. This man's technique is how a classic 911 is driven for maximum performance. Drifting is required.

    Lovely how efficient an overhanging rear weight can be. Better traction, better braking and of course not as good in making perfect smooth arcs or each corner, but this video illustrates it very well. The car is not particularly badly set up but it does not really mater.
    Just imagine if the current F1 cars of today had a rear engine configuration. Now that would be funny.

    good driver control and most importantly the car is set-up for this circuit. Did not see anything comparable out there that he was passing...but great vid non the less!!

      Actually, he also passed a Porsche 904 and two other early 911s toward the end of the vid. Good stuff.
