  • Sometimes, you find something online that catches your eye. You sure don't NEED it, but the price is right and it makes it's way home to you. That was the case with my new 1957 oldsmobile. I decided to take a morning and see if I could get the car to run. Will it run?

    I love the styling on 1957 Oldsmobiles. There was a "classic" car dealer near my house when i was a teen, which was mostly a field with many dead cars in it. He had a 57 Olds 88 two door hardtop. I used to go there and just sit in the car and pretend! Love that dashboard.

    One of my favorite cars. Gramps had a ‘57 Super 88 coupe and loved taking me for rides. Gramps died in 1960, Grandma kept it til ‘64 and traded in for a ‘65 Delta. That long glove box had a purpose, elegant ladies wore gloves that extended up to nearly the elbows. The wrap around dash really gave it a cockpit feel.

    I've been waiting for this. In 1967 I bought my first car: 1957 Olds 88. You should research that car. The options were pretty cool. Mine had a factory tri-power intake manifold. They also had auto dimmer switch as an option. Thanks for the memory. 😎

    I really enjoy your videos, Ben. You combine good detective works with great mechanical skills to get these old cars going again. FYI, this Olds does have a few options: Hydramatic, heater, radio, clock, two-tone paint. She is still a pretty plain one, though.

    • @raymondsmith7993
      @raymondsmith7993 6 месяцев назад

      Yes it has more options than my first 57 Olds 88 2 door hardtop with manual transmission. I bought it in 1978 and still own it. It has 2 options a heater and the J2 tripower carb option. I have added 2 more over the years a radio and since I am riding on radial tires I also added power steering.

    Excellent video..., hope that we get to see more. The late 50's were peak Oldsmobile (IMO) & '57 may be best year of all. That car is a stripper but the Hydramatic was an optional extra & not cheap. 3-speed manual on the column was standard on the 88.

    Actually, the car has quite a few extra cost options. Clock, radio and heater are options as is the Hydramatic and the wheel covers covers and two tone paint. In the early 50's, radio, heater and white walls ment a loaded car!

      @@TaylorZ2 oh yes. Prior to the 66 model year, heaters were an extra cost option on most cars. In 66, defrosters were required on all new cars, so the heater became a mandatory option still at extra cost on low price cars.

    My first car was a 57 Oldsmobile super 88. I saved up my money to buy a 63 Impala SS my friend had. Dad told me no if that idiot worked on it your not buying the damn thing. And took me up to a car lot where I first seen her brown and white two-tone it wasn't what I wanted. I thought it was big old and ugly. An old man's car $131.13 including state tax and licensing. Then I popped the hood and seen the biggest air cleaner I had ever seen,and fired her up, the mufflers had rotted off and she was straight pipes. And loud very loud. On the way home I pulled up next to Dad at the light and we went for it, and damn she kept up with the old man's 68 Catalina without any problems at the next light we did it again and damn if she didn't walk him off the line. Next light I got the finger wag as in don't do it again. Yeah right . Okay low is above reverse we ain't slamming it down into low, the next light I found out it will effortlessly spin it's tires and I fell in love with this big old beast. And fell in love with 57 Oldsmobiles. Over the years I bought every one I could find for sale. I had 31 of them, two doors four door station wagons. Holidays,88s super 88s 98sAlways looking for a rag top. Then I got married and they all went away, but I got to keep my 66 GTO our family car, and my 61 Impala SS rag top and the ,71 cutlass 442 I built for her. 57s will always hold a special place in my heart.
