@@d.davids1417 Every player just needs 3 "flower" cards and 1 "skull" card. You can designate it any way, eg. low number cards are flowers, while aces/kings are skulls. The only thing that is needed is to be able to immediately distinguish skulls from flowers. I have even played this game with Jungle Speed cards one time. Uno cards also work perfectly, we usually use the swap-color cards as skulls.
Though of course if someone with two cards left has played a 2 and a 3, for example (King being skull), over the course of a couple of rounds, the other players know that they have two flowers and therefore no skull (King). I’ve been playing with cards rather than buying the game and it’s fine for the most part
this reminds me of a coin game i once witnessed/played... i was hanging out with these guys and when it came time to pay the bill, someone said, let's play "xxxx".. don't remember the name.. basically everyone puts some coins in their hand.. and then you had to guess the number of coins everyone had in total.. or something like that.. i can't recall exactly.. but it was pretty cool.. i wonder if that variation could be turned into a board game..
I've added it, and it's way more engaging (I use turn order to break ties). I've also added one house rule that makes the game go faster, but doesn't actually change anything: the ante. I tell everyone to ante in first (this is identical to playing their first turn, but it's done simultaneously), and then whoever's turn it is has the option to raise or call. So it speeds things up, and adds one more piece of poker flavor.
Weird, we always played it that the player that did the flipping of cards, (regardless of if they flipped all roses or flipped a skull,) starts the next round as a reward for their bravery! Celebrating that bravery really helped new players not feel so bad when their first time flipping another players cards reveals a skull. When they look dejected we just raise a glass and cheer them for getting into it... like you damn well should! :D
I think the new edition also calls for the flipper to be the first player next round. And I also believe it calls for every other player to put down their first disc first, then the first player plays one, and then they get to either play another or call a flip. And finally, you don't get to pick the card you lose if you hit your own skull, but just shuffle and pick one randomly yourself.
Heh, I love how this game has almost developed an oral tradition of teaching the rules, (from various sources,) with out ever actually reading anything out :D
“I think the new edition also calls for the flipper to be the first player next round. “ - Correct “I also believe it calls for every other player to put down their first disc first, then the first player plays one, and then they get to either play another or call a flip.” - Correct. There is a good thread discussing the merits of this rule here: boardgamegeek.com/thread/1146928/weird-sentence-skull-rulebook “And finally, you don't get to pick the card you lose if you hit your own skull, but just shuffle and pick one randomly yourself.” Incorrect, at least according to the most up-to-date version of the rules on the game’s website: “If the Challenger has flipped their own skull, that player secretly chooses the disc they will lose” (page 12). www.skull-and-roses.com/pdf/Skull_EnP.pdf
So if you've played all four of your cards, you can never call a number higher then 3 because you will always hit a skull? You have to flip over your own 4 cards first, so you'll always hit your own skull, right?
I actually got to play this today! I grabbed 9 extra coasters (beer mats) and had an artistic friend draw skulls on three of them and we had a nice little 3 player game. Tons of fun, can play drunk, can play for free, thanks for this video
Can you skip back and forth between players when flipping cards after flipping your own. For instance, you flip the top card of player 3, then the top card of player 4. Can you go back and flop the next card of player 3? Or is it once you are done with them you cant go back?
According to my rules. The challenger is always the next start player. No matter if the challenge is successful or not. Only if he is eliminated on losing the challenge, the player whose skull was revealed is the next rounds start player. Are there different rule verions or did i get the video wrong? Thanks for recommending this nice game!
I understand most of the rules, but I couldnt see how it plays out if the first player just calls the maxium number of cards on the first round, they can't be outbid, so they just get to turn over all 4?
This seems interesting but it is striking me as a controlled version of Liar's Dice. Anyone who has played this can you comment on what this brings to the table over Liar's Dice?
One might be that it's easier to explain. I've played Liar's dice several times, and each time, I have to re-explain at least twice, that you can't reduce either number when you increase the bet. Then, next round, someone still goes from "three 6's" to "four 5's". They weren't even drunk.
Essentially. Technically, it means you as the Challenger failed the Challenge. That round ends, similar to if you flipped someone else's skull, the difference is, since it's your skull that you "hit", you get to pick your own card to be discarded (face down).
Tip: You can also very easily play it with any regular deck of cards in a pinch.
how?

@@HedelTorresliar's dice is kinda like this
I have a confession to make. Sometimes I like to listen to matt talk no matter what subject.
"and now, James Joyce's Ulysses, as read by Matt Lees..."
Contraty strat: make a point to NEVER look at the card you play and become a complete agent of chaos.
Better yet, only look at half...MOUAHAHAHAHA
I can tell someone RLLY likes coup
Awesome. Thanks for clarifying the one point in the rules I wanted to be clearer - the reveal of multiple cards on the stack.
That idea about live bidding rather than going around for raises is fantastic, I'll definitely be trying that next time.

This takes the best bits of poker and makes it fun.

This is a great video and you explain the game in such detail with also mentioning the tactics! It is like you taught me the game sitting next to you
I picked the new edition up recently and it's one of my favourite go-to games!
A great "How to.." tutorial. I've played once before but now I actually have the game!
So if you've played all four of your cards, you can never call a number higher then 3 because you will always hit a skull? You have to flip over your own 4 cards first, so you'll always hit your own skull, right?
my grandkids love this game. and so do i!

Great vid matt as always. Missed you guys at the UKGE 2019. You were busy elsewhere whilst a volunteer held fort. Hopefully see you next year :)
Great explanation - still watched it twice to be sure I got the premise! 😂
What if all the players keep putting cards and no one starts bidding? Does the 1st player who doesn't have any cards left in their turn have to bid?
Yes, when nobody started a bid earlier in the round, the first player that has no coaster left to play must start it.
Can you skip back and forth between players when flipping cards after flipping your own. For instance, you flip the top card of player 3, then the top card of player 4. Can you go back and flop the next card of player 3? Or is it once you are done with them you cant go back?
yes, you can switch between other players

I agree. That's what I read in the rules as well. It's the only disagreement I have on this video
Just pick up skull today at the local shop. Hype. 💀
I wish the skulls were replaced with different gun art. Then it would be Guns & Roses.
I understand most of the rules, but I couldnt see how it plays out if the first player just calls the maxium number of cards on the first round, they can't be outbid, so they just get to turn over all 4?
That's correct. But if anyone put a skull down, whoever called the bid is toast
@@charliedoucette2249 thanks 👌👌👌
Wait, if i put my skull in my first turn, does it mean i cannot bet or raise later on because i will always flip my own skull?
Question: can you up the player count? Can we play it with 10-12 people? Not many good card games for that group size undortunately :(
The game starts to strain very much at 6 players. I would strongly discourage that.
SKULL EDITION GAMING
I play this but you only have to flip your top card over
Good to see Matt again. The vids have missed his touch.

You won't drop any dice onto dark pub floors
This game is like a motorcycle. Liars dice is like motorcycle with five wheels.
What happens when you run out of cards?
You are eliminated from the game.
I don't get it.
The one card game with no text
If you've got to flip all of your own cards over when bidding and you've got a skull in there isn't that just an instant loss?
Yep. Make sure when you bluff that you can flip over your own cards, somebody else is going to outbid you.
wait unless you mean like a total loss, in which case, no.
Essentially. Technically, it means you as the Challenger failed the Challenge. That round ends, similar to if you flipped someone else's skull, the difference is, since it's your skull that you "hit", you get to pick your own card to be discarded (face down).
Great explanation
Very cool
Ha! I saw you and Quinns on Charlie Brooker's video game doc. How'd you get that sweet gig?
Matt was actually the lead writer on that project!
That's awesome! I thoroughly enjoyed it. It tickled the old nostalgia button I have for 80s video games. Did Matt do any other writing for Charlie?
I know he wrote some of 2013 or 2014 yearly wipe, he's in the credits. :)
Is there a minimum bid?
Yes, 1
Isn't it called "Skull and Roses"?
Oh okay my friend also has the "Skull and Roses" version
AHHHHH!
Yeah, same game and rules, I believe.
Audrey, I get lost in your eyes.
I enjoyed this explanation!. Just one question. So, basically you can depletes the other stacks without touch your own stack right?
No
Can you get a second copy and double the max number of players (12 instead of 6)?
The rules says you can but suggests no more than 10 players for optimum gameplay
i just bought this game. after listening to the game explanation, im taking it back to the shop.
that silhouette in the background though. that a ghost?
