I tried this exercise with my clothes a while ago and found it really helpful before going shopping, because what you think you need is not always what you actually need:)

I would have liked to see examples of your items and which ones you would choose to eliminate. If you could lay out your 8 sweaters in a video and show how you determine to keep or where the gaps are for future purchases. A number doesn’t really tell the story. I loved. Your comment on coats and would like to see a video in how many coats a person could use and why, also accessories for coats like hats and scarves. Like you, I live in coats.

I would like to see the process, how do you count? What categories do you have?
I also live in coats. What type of coats should one have? Same with fine knit sweaters, chunky knit sweaters. Are hoodies included in the sweater category? So many questions!
      Loved this video!

I'd love it if you did an episode on the topic of coats and a coat collection for those of us living in colder climates. I went for most of my life (until last year) with a single winter coat which I wore from October to April, but recently I have found that I wanted my coat to fit my outfits and also to express different styles. I have one big outdoor-style winter coat for really cold weather and being out in nature that is comfortable and quite elegant even. And I have a casual wool coat in a fun and warm red (consignment), and a more elegant and formal navy wool coat that I bought new. I feel that with these colours and styles I can cover most occasions in my life, but I would love to hear more about your ideas for winter coats and their styling.

I really enjoyed this video. Very thought-provoking. I took the last year off from clothes shopping and managed to only buy one long sleeved light sweater in a colour I really love and a pair of shorts which I wore every day this summer. I retired two months ago, which I am enjoying sooooo much but I am finding I LIVE in my workout clothes (and yes, I am actually working out ha ha). So this is my winter challenge, defining a style for new me. I worked in an office for many years. Thanks Alyssa!!!

I also took a year off and it was just fine. I didn't go through withdrawels or longing for anything. LOL! I honestly took a good look at what I had and decided that it was more than enough, and it honestly was. I also need to find a new winter/at home style. I have gone through my wardrobe recently as I changed out summer clothes for fall, and honestly, my look needs some help. I want to be able to open the door to an unexpected knock without worrying about how I look. Unfortunately, I've gotten a bit lazy about getting dressed when I'm just staying home. I always look put together when I leave, but as soon as I get home, those clothes either get hung back up or put in the laundry and I am back into my sweats. Katherine, you've inspired me! Thank you!

Also, I hope you all are doing the backwards hanger trick. Once you bring your fall and winter clothes out and move your spring and summer to another closet, hang everything backwards on the rod. Once spring rolls around and you get all those shirts back out, you'll see which fall-winter items you never wore and you'll probably choose to get rid of them!

I am also trying to take a year off! After a month of no shopping, I went back to work and realized all of my professional pants are too big. It was too expensive to have them all tailored. So, I bought a few new pair and gave the others to a friend. I hut reset on no new clothes Today! I am looking forward to it.

I'd like to see how you decide what stays and what goes...actually see the items, if possible. (I have such a hard time clearing things from my closet, even if I'm not wearing them - it's like a sort of "attachment disorder!")

    • @CT1010101
      @CT1010101 2 года назад +2

I know this "disorder" lol. My grandma, mom, and best friend are like this and I think it stems from a scarcity mindset. They all grew up without much money and so it's super hard for them to let go of possessions even though they don't need them. I wasn't always very understanding about it because I never was in that situation but as I've gotten older I have so much compassion for it. I understand why they are scared to let go of something they might not be able to replace (even though they are no longer in those financial situations). Especially growing up like that, I imagine that's something that never leaves you.

I am truly impressed! I have thought of doing this, but then become overwhelmed. My lifestyle has changed dramatically since the Pandemic and I am hesitant to apply the "what I am not wearing" question as everything I love to do has been shut down....just about everything. That is probably why I overpacked a little on my first get-away. I had things I wanted to wear and mixed up a new pair of pants with a sweater I purchased last December with my new Dr. Francis yellow croc booties. I changed 3 times a day...at least! However...I digress. I am truly overwhelmed when I look in my closet.

Finally commenting after binging so much of your channel! Thank you thank you for such well thought-out, honest content. I love that your approach to slow fashion feels pragmatic and doable and not contrived. These are principles that can be taken into understanding yourself and your style and approach to clothing, no matter what your total number of items is. It's about consciousness, not arbitrary rules or limits :)

I started an excel sheet with all of my clothes last winter writing down the type of piece, colour, print, when and where i bought it, etc. I update it as I rotate my wardrobe through the seasons and I am currently at more than 150 pieces and have not put in the entire wardrobe yet... That means no more shopping!
Thank you for the video; it is amazing to me how you can make all those inspiring lookbooks with only these 131 pieces! Keep up the good work :D

I've used it to keep track of what needs alterations, whether it's a top or bottom, what can be worn to work, level of formality...it makes it less intimidating and more fun to go through my clothes inventory than to sift through my closet. I enjoyed this video a lot. It made me think of dressing for my fantasy self, versus living the reality of being retired and living in a very cold climate (Winnipeg, Canada). I love in- between seasonal wear, blazers and long cardigans with t-shirts and booties for example, but the truth is we rarely have weather that supports this look! Like you, it is either hot or it becomes cold overnight. It's extremely windy here too. I mainly wear sweaters and jeans/trousers in the winter with a heavy coat, and all my non-waterproof boots get ruined. So why am I still buying things that don't fit with our climate? You've opened my eyes to this conundrum and awareness is the first step to change (I hope!). Thanks Alyssa.

For the last four months, I have implemented an inventory system. I have been recording each time I wear an item. I am going to enter this data onto a spread sheet and calculate my cost per wear.Very illuminating. It has helped me to be honest with myself about what really suits me and I don't replicate items either.

Hi Alyssa. The first thing that popped in my mind when you were surprised at the number of items and ratio of new to 2nd hand is that a ton of your new stuff came as part of sponsored content and so you may want to look at your count again in terms of that-POP button downs, Everlane merch etc so your ratio would
Probably be much different if you didn’t have your channel. As long as you’re wearing what you have and caring for your items carefully-which u are-i think that sb the measure

I agree and what I find extremely hypocritical on youtube are those channels focusing on minimalism and sustainability but seem to have new pieces of closing each season and promote shady practices such as everlane's "radical transparency" that fit more into green washing than what you would think...

When we moved into our Tiny House On Wheels almost 4 years ago, I had 2 drawers for my clothes, no closet. 1 drawer for lingerie, socks, scarves, gloves, hats, etc. 2nd drawer holds all outer clothes - dresses, skirts, shirts, sweaters, jackets, etc. I found that I love it! I can see all my clothes at a glance. They all mix and match, they all fit, they are all in good repair. I tend to average 14 garments at any given time. No other garments in storage. And yes, I live in a 4 season climate, with snow annually. Really seems to work for me.

This is my aspiration! I started with not buying socks or underwear until what I had wore out (that was close to 11 years ago now, and I've finally been able to get rid of some worn out pieces in the last two years!). I have just the amount I need to get from laundry day to laundry day for cold and warm seasons in the "underthings" drawer. I need to be just as strategic in all the other categories. I drastically downsized to a nearly minimal wardrobe after significant weight loss, but then stress and health conditions led to re-gaining. Trying to keep just a module or two in the larger size while regaining my leaner size/wardrobe.

Loved this! I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one that goes through this audit process and discovers surprises about their wardrobe and assumptions they have. After doing this process the last time I went one step further and photographed every piece of clothing I own and made a Pinterest board. I refer to this board when I am out and about and tempted to buy something (I likely don't need). Doing these audits has really helped be better define my style and feel more comfortable in my own skin. Plus the Pinterest board keeps me in check and as a bonus reminds me of items that I love that I haven't worn. Thank you so much for sharing. You've inspired me to look through what I've got again!

Do you take a picture of each garment laying flat/hanging/on you? Thinking of doing something similar, but wondered how to keep an objective view of the pieces in case it leads to needing to decide to downsize.

    • @budd20e

@@nicolehood6408 Great question! I took pictures of my clothes on a dressform in front of a white wall. Garments that I couldn't get on the dress form I held out in front of a white wall on a hanger. :) I hope this helps. I found this approach really let me see how the clothes hang and how they "fit" without it being pictures of me so to speak. This helps me be a bit more objective.

I count my clothes about 2 years ago for the first time - 258 items back then. When I first did it I was incredibly surprised by the fact that I own 14! black t-shirts. Now I have around 160 items, with shoes and bags. I live in a 4 seasons climate. I think that counting your clothes and analyzing how much of particular items you have and also looking at color story of your wardrobe should be first thing that one do when decluttering or planning shopping for new season or when you feel like you have nothing to wear or when you want to change your style direction. There are so many benefits of knowing exactly how much clothes you own that I would probably run out of space in comment if I'd write them all down.

I just try compensate by thrifting them as much as I can or buying second hand (which imo makes them more unique and special because they’re hard to replace), holding on to them as long as possible, avoiding fast fashion brands that are low in quality, and sometimes altering/flipping them when I feel like it has outdated my style (like when I don’t prefer wearing this kind of fit or length etc).

I will do the same and let you know, what I find trouble with is the weight fluctuations, so I kept pieces that don’t fit me anymore but I feel like I will need them in time... (regarding pregnancy , both ways though) and also, there are some items that are high quality and staples that I feel will be nice to keep for when I feel like them again instead of buying new ones, so I keep a box of a dedicated size that has to fit those and I try to be honest about it. Enjoyed the video very much. I've counted my closet before and was shocked. I'm continually decluttering. However, I have a situation I wrestle with. If I find something I love then I want 3 of them in different colors. I think this is a family trait I've noticed my sibling does this. Then you get a little closet build up again. Declutter again... I think my reasoning is that I love the item, I want to own it in different colors, and they will probably stop making it. Like buying 3 pair of the same jeans in 3 washes/colors. This might be a psychological issue. :-/ I do enjoy your channel and your enthusiasm and your expertise. Thank you!

I keep track of my clothes, etc on Stylebook App. I started because I live in Africa, but have some long visits back to the US. (Northwest MT where they have the coldest temperatures in the US.) I have the clothes I wear in Africa, things that are appropriate to the culture, but I wouldn't wear them in the US. Then I have a winter wardrobe with warm clothes, outerwear, boots, etc. It's easy to forget what I have in one place if I'm in another place. I have pictures and sometimes the price and some details about the piece. It took some time, but I have all my clothes, even things like workout, loungewear, swimwear, pajamas, and all my shoes and accessories, etc. Now I track what I wear on a daily basis. Just recently, there were a couple of shirts that I was sure I wore a lot. When I checked, I had only worn them a few times in the last 12-15 months. If I was just going off my memory, I would have kept them. But seeing that I didn't really reach for them that often, I felt confident passing them along to someone who would use them more.

Will you be doing a video where your purging those items, after doing this count. That you feel you are not using, like reducing those medium weight sweaters for example. That be interesting to watch that process. Where you say you have eight dresses you dont like dresses. What things will you keep or reduce, it be an interesting follow up video to this one. Just an idea!

also you could try styling them under blazers or coats even over a button down to get more wear out of them. layering would be a functional option

Long time lurker, first time commenting :) Thanks for this vid! This has come at the perfect time in our season. I live on the west coast, and I've held off buying anything for fall (resisting those early sales) so far. Now that the weather is getting cooler, I was *this* close to loading up shopping carts (online) and buying like a crazy person. Off to count and appreciate what and how much I have. I'm sure even if I purged things that don't fit (damn that pandemic weight gain), I'll still have plenty to get me through the winter months. Also, your comment about being pragmatic and accepting of the climate we live in; obviously here on the west coast, with the amount of rain we have, the smart outerwear choices are rainproof jackets plus gum boots, not a rainbow of wool coats (so tempted by all the vloggers and bloggers who are showing off this time of year) and bunch of leather ankle boots. A good reminder to stick with what works. Thanks again! xoxoxo

Great video! I count all of my items in an Excel file, helps to track everything and control my impulse purchases. If I already own like 5 small bags do I really need another one? lol. I also divide items by seasons. One note: music is so much louder than you talking :)

    Bonjour Alyssa,

I have a box at the end of my wardrobe- anything that doesn't make me feel good goes in there, then after say 3 months if I don't go looking for it...... I close my eyes as I bag them and donate to charity!! I would like a video on coats & jumpers as I sometime can't fit a big jumper under certain coats!

There is some merit to storing away some extra pieces as long as you truly love them. You've mentioned your idle dream of moving somewhere warmer at some point. It's also a delight to unearth some old favorites in the future so you can enjoy them again. You have a reasonable number of clothes, especially since each item was purchased with consideration and carefully curated. Perhaps your parents would be willing to store a box or two of well-loved clothes if space is a problem for you. Then you'll have a happy surprise waiting for the future you.

Yet, I own so many summer dresses. 🙈🙈🙈 I think they help me cope with winter and hope that warm weather will be here soon. I think I'm going to call it my "Hope and cope" category! 😎🍁Have a great week, Bella!

Hi, I counted my garments including shoes about two months ago as I've been decluttering a lot since I started really getting into minimalism during the last year or so.
If I remember correctly it was around 160. I declutter regularly having at last made peace with the most important factor which is definitely, as you say, distancing myself emotionally. Initially that was very hard. But otherwise there will be very little decluttering.
Most of my clothes are second hand, accumulated over 20 years more or less. The one thing I found that really works for me during winter, bearing in mind that I live in sunny South Africa, where the winters are mild, is to have enough quality but plain, long sleeve t- shirts to wear for warmth and then just add a lovely light weight blouse or cardigan or jacket over, which I can take off when it gets hot during the day. Layering in other words.
That way I'm warm and stylish without having to have lots of heavy winter material garments which are used for maybe 4 months of the year if that.
I love watching your videos but just wonder why you don't look into the camera.
It looks as though you're looking at something above the camera. Anyway, it's not criticism, just an observation xx

Hi, I'm from Perú and to be honest I have lots of clothes. Your closet count video helps me do a clothing review. I usually give them as a donation, around here there is no culture of buying second-hand. As you say, it is not necessary to have so much, it is better to know how to combine what you have instead of buying. Thanks for your advice, keep it up!

I am not a minimalist but have not bought a new item in over 4 years . I’m going through menopause so my weight has changed up and down . I’ve chosen to keep a lot of my clothing rather than tossing . I have a room so I kinda made a boutique for myself . I’m sure I will do some purging when I accept my heavier self but I keep hoping I can loose the weight and keep it off , so I hang on to items . I kinda shop my closet every season and pack the clothes I still love in hopes for another try . I love all your ideas for putting outfits together .

It is good to do an audit and see what we wear most so we can buy more purposely and not add another skirt if we don't wear them often. However maybe not get rid of them but not add more. I decided not to get rid of something that I already own, like and maybe not wear often but at least I don't have to buy one if I decide to wear more skirts for instance. I realise my tastes are evolving constantly and as long as the clothes fit me in shape and colour (and classic enough that they don't look dated) I will hold off getting rid of them.

I, too, found that doing a count of my items helped me gain very valuable insight into my habits, my style and where I may have gaps in my wardrobe. It's very helpful in curbing impulse buys, but this is a strange time of transition. I'm working from home permanently now, therefore wearing my office clothes a lot less and I'm planning a move to a completely different climate. So for now, I'm trying not to buy anything until things settle down a bit more and I have a better idea of what my lifestyle will look like going forward. I'll likely do another closet audit then.

Edith Head wrote a great book called How to Dress For Success. She recommends taking all clothes out, putting them on the bed in categories and, after you figure out what your lifestyle is, see how many fit into your lifestyle category as well as other great advice. I notice that you gravitate toward a certain portion of your wardrobe in your videos and that capsule of clothes looks great on you. I also have a lot of coats. One is a bright teal blue! I feel better about the amount now. It is nice to change it up in winter. I'm afraid to even count my closet. My winter project is to go through everything, after I figure out what styles I like best, suit me and fit my lifestyle and sell or donate the rest. If donating everyone, don't forget women's shelters. Some women have to leave with just the clothes on their back. Thanks for a great video.

Four seasons here in the NE. Spring and fall are shorter than in the past (2 decades ago :). I layer tops now instead of thick sweaters. I get more use out of my tops that way. I do have about 6 heavy sweaters. When it gets cold we do grab those thick sweaters. I always want to get rid of turtlenecks because I only use them (maybe) in January and February. I restrain myself each spring and am thankful to myself that I don't let them go each winter. Good video, we do need to evaluate our clothing choices and compare to our lifestyle.

You said you own 8 dresses. I own around 30 (sic! I know it sounds like huge over representation) but I do wear them yearly. Some of them are more casual, some are more formal or festive but all are in rotation and use.
Some of my clothes were wating for turn. As a mum at home I haven't worn them for almost 3 years but I am in a transition time into being a professional woman again so those clothes are going to have their great come back very soon.
    Thank you for this video🙏🙂

I've been trying to declutter since the pandemic began, two years in and I'm still struggling! 🤣 I will be moving to a new climate (from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest) in a year or two... so I'm motivated by moving expenses but also fear of the unknown is in play.
I had decided to get a set number of hangers and treat them as a hard limit, based on various criteria I initially decided on 💯, but found it surprisingly inadequate. 🤔 I'm in the process of trying to estimate how many of each different types of clothes I might need for seasonal layering, and activities which I haven't done much of living here...
Also learning about the Kibbe body typing or "Body Geometry" concept helps but is adding more considerations...
Surprisingly complex project! 🤣 Thank you for speaking to it!

I know that my most expensive item has been worn so many times that it has a cost per wear under a penny. I know that I have 2 pairs of high heels that I haven't worn in 3 years. I’m appalled at how many clothes I have but then a lot of them are over 10 years old! I’m much older than you so have had longer to accumulate. I have found though that certain ones don’t fit or suit me anymore so haverecent,y tried to clear them out. I’m trying to look really objectively at any gaps and see if I can fill them with second hand buys too. I’ve changed shape due to the menopause so that’s made me rethink my look lately. I really need to reduce the amount of jeans I have! Just did a jumper cull though ☺️

@shsvc15, enjoyed your comment here - I wouldn't dare to count my current wardrobe 😳! Jeans look great in a pile, and I kept some sitting there for way too long. Only when I allowed the time to try each pair on did I find the easy choice staring back at me from the mirror. Watching a fashion pro like Alyssa has helped me be more clear, calm & confident in moving pieces on - lately I've found they're not my best colour, or no longer suit my size and shape. It also helps to have friends or a terrific charity shop to donate to (Red Cross).

This is very timely. I don’t plan to do a “grand total” count but love your advice to group all the same things together and count in categories. I mean, how many party/wedding dresses can one accumulate when I need them maybe twice yearly???!!! Or work dresses! If I’m honest, I always reach for a dressier slack outfit over a dress...
