This is one of the weirdest things I've seen Hollywood do. It's an odd cult-like mentality, almost like deity worship. Dude was an actor. Why is he being treated with such reverence? As an actor, isn't the entire art about bringing different performances to life with different takes? Saying that no one should be allowed to play a character anymore to honor a previous performer is a bizarre take that flies in the face of the art of theater. And to extend the death of the actor to the death of the fictional character he played is just insane.

They didn't have to do what they did at all. Christopher Reeves and Adam West died but the Superman and Batman that came after are not from the same franchise or universe. And yes William Hurt died but I think that we can agree that the disruption to continuity brought on by recasting background, supporting characters like Colonel Ross, or James Rhodes is not comparable to recasting someone like Chadwick Boseman or for instance Robert Downey Jr. Part of what makes Marvel cool is the continuity brought on by seeing the same faces that we're familiar with. Black Panther recasting was stopped by feminism disguised as respect for the passing of Chadwick. They wanted to see Shuri get her turn as the Queen of Wakanda. They now know that doesn't work. So the next course of Action is to do what they did to colossus sister Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik, or Jonathan Kent over at DC. Give us some science-magic mumbo Jumbo to age up T'challa Jr. -and say he was always suppose to be T'challa the Black Panther. That way they respect the history of Chadwick's version of the character, while giving us a proper Black Panther without actually recasting.

Maybe we should be looking at the mandate that existed for the past 100 years of movies that dictated straight men be leads? Was there ever this kind of uproar then? Men took the bigger share of lead roles for a very long time. What we're seeing today is certainly a consequence of that but that's another conversation. In this current case, I do believe that the main reason T'challa wasn't recast is because of how much impact he had on the character. It would be like replacing Robert Downey Jr. That would disrupt the flow of things to see someone else in these iconic roles. We're familiar with those people. Eventually the MCU will be rebooted just like every other super hero franchise. She was a flesh out character, always written as a woman. They don't write characters like that anymore. They write characters who fit a false narrative. Example. Anakin learned from Obi wan the ways of the force, and still made mistakes and lost some limbs. Luke learned from Obi wan and Yoda, made mistakes lost some limbs. Rey learned the force by reading some books that Luke had, not from Luke. Made no mistakes, lost no limbs. I'm all for gender equality. They pretty much immediately recast Thunderbolt Ross (I know that Ross' last appearance was in 2021's Black Widow and his next will be in 2025, but come on, Marvel instantly started looking), and they even recast Dumbledore right after the original actor for the first two movies passed.

Chadwick was great as T’Challa, RIP but T’Challa is bigger than Chadwick and had potential to continue to grow in popularity regardless of what happened to Chadwick. Regardless of wether they should’ve recast him or not, killing the character off screen was a massive disservice to both the character and IMO at least, Boseman’s legacy. I think on top of the actor's death, and the fear of backlash in recasting him too soon, the MCU was stuck in this spot of having to move forward without him. They probably had a sequel in mind before his death and were still committed to doing so, but felt they had to rewrite it in a way that acknowledged real world events, so besides pushing shuri as the replacement and whatever was going on with Namor, it likely shot down a lot of enthusiasm for how to move forward with that character and setting as a major player in the MCU. Post-End Game media has been really unfocused, basically throwing in more characters/concepts/places without much of a natural connection between each other, probably to see what sticks, while trying to ease Kang into place as the next major threat.
With said major threat now having their central actor out of the picture, and a lot of the underwhelming reception recent MCU media has received... I'm pretty sure Marvel/Disney's concerns right now are not going to be focused on how to bring back this one superhero among dozens of others. Especially when it's been put in such an awkward position about potential backlash. The next Black Panther actor, and movie, would have to be amazing or at least really good to cement itself as a worthy successor... and given the MCU's recent track record, I wouldn't suggest it.

Not recasting T'Challa was one of the worst decisions they made in recent years, and that's saying something. This whole "There can be only one" sacred mentality is just a giant virtue signal, and it's extremely cringe. I was never on the "Dldon't recast" bandwagon, and I think the only reason a lot of people were is precisely because it was a bandwagon. Don't get me wrong, it sucks when someone who seemed like a genuinely good and decent human being does so suddenly and tragically, but frankly, my attachment is to the characters, not the specific people playing them, and T'Challa was too important to the MCU moving forward. Having him die in more or less the same way that Boseman himself did completely undermined the narrative arc he was on and just left a giant gaping hole in the world that Shuri just isn't capable of filling. No beef with the actor, she does a serviceable job, but I didn't see Wakanda Forever because I wanted to see the rivalry between "the" Black Panther and actual Namor, not second string backup quarterback Black Panther and Namor in name only. Making Shuri the lead is like making Q the lead in a 007 film. Q is cool, but I'll always be thinking that I'd much rather be watching James Bond.

  • @stripedligerpilot7419

When Boseman passed, I knew that T'Challa would too. Honoring an actor by not recasting them is one thing, practically erasing the character they played is another all together, but it was to be expected in this era. Its one of the things I dislike when comparing DC and Marvel in fact. DC doesn't mind letting the movies have an identity separate from the comics, but Marvel seems to have an obsession with making the comics as similar to the movies as possible.
If you asked me, the perfect way to honor Boseman would have been a mandate where T'Challa would always be drawn to look like him (granted the family would agree of course). Honoring a great actor by immortalizing their face as the character they played and loved playing sounds great to me and im sad that a character that he brought to life so well has to disappear instead of love on

They literally recast Thunderbolt Ross(who has been a prominent recurring character) because of William Hurt's passing. James Rhodes and Bruce Banner were suddenly recasted out of nowhere and the world moved on. Black Panther(T'Challa) needs to be recast. I feel like Chadwick would want someone else to keep the character going. And me as a selfish marvel fan wants to see the relationship of Storm and T'Challa play out in the MCU, as well as having him as the next "Iron Man" role of providing advanced tech, money, knowledge, and maybe even being apart of a possible Illuminati team up. There's so many more stories to tell with T'Challa. I'm sad af Chadwick passed so soon and loved his portrayal of the character, but we NEED T'Challa back in the MCU.

Why is it so odd that Marvel decide not to recast T'challa? The way I see it, one of Marvel's big draws is the continuity element. It's cool to see characters come back with the same faces that we're familiar with. And in the case of T'challa, the role was so heavily impacted by Chadwick's performance that replacing him would be like replacing Robert Downey Jr in the role of Iron Man. Terrence Howard was replaced but he didn't have anywhere close the impact on Rhodey that Chadwick and RDJ have had on T'challa and Tony respectively. So it's pretty understandable why there would be apprehension about replacing him from Marvel. The example of Kevin Conroy isnt really applicable as he's a voice actor and while he's made his mark on Batman too, we're not seeing his face. No one is saying T'challa can't come back at some point in another iteration of the MCU or a reboot. He doesn't have to come back now tho. How is any of this tarnishing his legacy? It's ridiculous. Whatever Chadwick wanted or didn't want, he doesnt own the character, Disney does. So what does his opinion or his family's matter in this?

I felt T'Challa should have gotten a new actor , not right away, obviously, but his story was far from done , in fact, it was just beginning.
Im not convinced Shuri can continue as the primary black panther going forward, but we will see i guess. There are plenty of actors out there that can portray T'Challa as well as Boseman did and honor his legacy, id be curious to see how Disney handles the franchise in the future

    They said Black Panther mattered.
They never said T'Challa mattered, and they proved it by refusing to recast.

I was in favor of having a "TEMP" ban on the character in order to give the audience some time and give Marvel time to work on a long term plan on the character. Doing too much would only harm the Name brand of the character. But i think its about due time to see him in some future projects. A strong leading character is what Marvel is missing and needs something if they want the audience to come back.

Yeah, that was kind of my idea too. I think rather than killing the character off, they should have reworked the movie to have either taken place in the 5-year snap gap or make it a prequel about his father (or maybe even his grandfather, which would have been a good opportunity to get back to the World War II era of the MCU if they went with that). So that way we have an organic reason why his character isn't there without killing him off. This way there would be plenty of time to process emotions, let grief play its course out then after the movie has been made and time has passed they could reassess if they actually want to put a permaban on recasting. My guess is after that amount of time they probably wouldn't have.

Maybe it’s because Disney is still a racist company at heart (for example Disney was ready to openly copyright the day of the dead in 2016, in 2016 they made an effort to try to not make Moana a Disney princess, the princess and the frog isn’t getting any representation at the disney parks until a decade after the film realise, but the song of the south log ride its replacing got to live in Disneyland for 30 years.). Sweeping black panther under the rug means the Disney company can go back to making safe films that don’t take risks.

Chadwick Boesman was born in 1976. T'Challa's successful introduction in 1966 made the possibility of including black superheroes in mainstream comic book stories a viableoption. T'Challa was an icon before Chadwick Boesman was even born. T'Challa had his fans long before Chadwick Boesman played the role: T'Challa has been my favourite superhero since I was in the second grade back in 1979. T'Challa didn't magically spring into existence when Chadwick Boesman first played the character

Many great actors have played James Bond, many great actors have played Sherlock Holmes, many great actors have played Ebenezer Scrooge.
I don’t get why comic book fans think only one person can play a character very well.

Some multiversal/variant shenanigans at this point. Some folks suggest a Skrull substitution unbeknown to the royal family etc; personally I think that makes Wakanda look even more silly than the second movie already did. It's definitely harder now than it ever needed to be, that's for sure.

Nobody complained about when they replaced Rhodey / War Machine and Bruce Banner / Hulk so why couldn’t T’Challa be recast too?

    • @neospock5034
      @neospock5034 28 дней назад

The recasting of Rhodey was no different than the recasting of Bruce Banner- just Disney/Marvel Studios going with a different actor for business reasons. The same with multiple actors portraying Howard Stark in different movies.
The decision to not recast T'Challa revolved around the actor's unexpected death and their perception that recasting would be negatively perceived by the public.

To me this situation had always been the equivalent of Tom Holland tragically dying, and then replacing him with Miles Morales, yeah you’re not replacing Peter Parker with a recast, but you are still ultimately replacing Spider-Man.
