This is such a great illustration of how power is being conveyed while still showing respect to other crews. He wasn’t telling them not to run the scam, just not to run it there. Honor among thieves, so to speak.
Back then the Chicago Outfit ran Vegas. Any mobster from any of the five families of New York or anywhere else would have known better to have pulled some shit like that in Vegas back then. They'd have never made it out of Vegas alive. Chicago ran everything west of the Mississippi, The 5 families ran everything east of the Mississippi. Arizona and Southern Florida were open territory.

It's really distinctive, all the bloom lighting. This movie still stands out because I don't know of any other film that looks like this. I guess it'd look strange over an HD film.
I always thought that was one of his most authentic mob scenes too. Ironically it's where he holds back and under acts and is reserved and quiet. He does that a lot in the Irishman too. And he was fantastic in that as well. His most famous scenes are the opposite. There is a lesson in that young actors.
@r_man I think they're too old to be doing the flashback to when they were young stuff. The cgi was not good. I think the one part that comes to mind for everyone is, when Denerio was stomping the store guy on the ground. That was real bad
Well, Godot never showed up, so why the hell not? 😁 But I have a feeling Carmine isn't coming either.... He's buried under a cactus somewhere North of Vegas.
To me, this is the most important scene of the film. Nikki Santoro doesn't even need to spell it out. He just answers their questions with silence and a raised brow and they immediately understand that their lives depend upon them leaving, now, and forgetting that "Carmine" ever existed. Today, Carmine was their friend. Now, Carmine doesn't exist.
I love Pesci's Chicago accent in this movie. You expect to hear Tommy's voice from Goodfellas but you hear that Chicago, "over dare," enunciation. Brilliant!
Classic how he taps him on the right shoulder then ducks left to force him to turn a full 180. Subtle sign that conveys he will always going be watching.
"So what are you gonna do about it?" "Me? Nothin." "What does that mean?" "I didn't say nothin..." "Someone should do something about it." "I appreciate your thoughts." "Are you saying what I think your saying?" "I didn't say nothin...Alright then I'll talk to ya."
Presence is everything. When I was in my teens, my grandfather (an old school east end Londoner) told me.. If you get a few big lumps turn up on your door, it's intimidation, If you get a lone small bloke, you should be looking for the back door, sharpish.
The guy with the beard was in Goodfellas wearing the glasses sitting next to Henry during the "you're a funny guy" scene. He was a cop in real life who ended up mobbed up. He was one of the many shady characters they rounded up for Goodfellas to work as consultants in exchange for bit roles. Read about it in the new book about the movie.
My favorite is just a voice over. Nicky-"Lotsa problems buried in that desert. But you gotta have the hole dug before you show up with the package. Someone comes along at random, you gotta dig another hole. You could be out there all fuckin' night, digging holes".
This is the equivalent of Carmine Sr. on the sopranos ordering a hit on Johnny Sack by saying literally nothing. “What are you gonna do?” “Me? Nothing”
EVERY scene with Joe Pesci in Casino was the best scene. Actually -- every scene in every movie with Joe Pesci is the best scene ---- in the entire movie. If Joe Pesci did a toothpaste commercial -- it would be the best scene of any commercial ever made. There is NOBODY like him.

The DeNiro character is based on Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal. When I was in college in the early 90’s, I worked at a place in Boca Raton FL called Croc’s Sport Bar. Rosenthal got hired as the general manager. He would stand in different corners of the place and just watch. Everyone and everything. Just intense stare. Just analyzing situations. Like he was sizing everyone up. With a cigarette in hand. Very creepy.
The guy the character was based on was Anthony “ Tony the Ant” Spiolotro. He was known to be vicious. He definitely could have pulled off that move in real life.
Destefano was propley the biggest lunatic in the history of the mob. Sure some outfit guys say frank the german swiess or larry lurch newman and to be honest they were complete lunatics that did things for there own phycotic deluded pleasures but i dont know anybody in the mob that was an actualy devil whorshiper.. Sam taught he was bein comanded by the devil, used to set up alters and roll around the floor fraughting at the mouth shouting command me saten im here to serve you.. He kidnapped a guy and forced him and his wife to have sex at gun point, he pissed on his lawyer, he used to piss into the Bill Roamers coffee and prance around in front of him naked.. He was planning on buying a pig farm and used to drive to a farm and watch the pigs and fantazise about feeding um live bodys and he would just stay there for hours on his own - i guess to him it was peaceful - to the average person a horror show.. He used to foam at the mouth when he used to tourcher poeple now that shit right there is a different type of crazy.. Spilotro learned his craft from this guy thats why spilotro was such a phyco, not only that spilotro was with milwaki phil before this - he only learned his craft from the 2 most vicious killers in the outfit at that time... Milwaki phil was another nut, hence spilotro became a nut only more in control and reserved than those 2.. Yet with spilitro when that camera was on him you can see there was an underling menace there just waiting to explode - his viciouness was evident.... .
really is a subtle scene. if you've ever been around in Pennsylvania, New York, etc, you'll still find a lot of guys who talk like these folks; not gangsters, just everyday people.
Not really Pennsylvania, unless you're talking about the tiny part of Pennsylvania known as South Philly. It's really a northern Jersey, NYC thing, or in the case of this character, a Chicago accent.
@@danielstoddart North Jersey checking in and I concur with this statement. NY is pretty diversified so not so much on the gangster mannerisms for most people but get up above Mahwah in Jersey and goddamn....EVERYONE does this. I am speaking from the 80's and 90's, especially.
I like that this whole thing was taken care of with simple conversation, handshakes and a peaceful resolution. No insults, no threats, no violence, everyone is (seemingly) on good terms. At the same time, if you don't know the hidden meanings, the context, the coded language, the actual words seem rather silly: "He left." "He's not here?" (well, if he left, that means he's not here) "I'm over here now" (which you can easily see since I'm standing right in front of you).
That's true Cosa Nostra. You are never allowed to verbally abuse another made member or accuse them of being a liar. The little guy was from Chicago and part of The Outfit which isn't exactly Cosa Nostra but I'm assuming the same rules are followed to an extent since both have seats on the Commission. Well if it was someone else(who doesn’t know who Nicky is) he would have to insult him and threat him, like he did to that banker. Just by seeing a made men from Chicago in Vegas casino, and he tells you that he is with casino managers, its not hard to understand message. @@jimsmith9853 Tell me about it. I was in NY last year. The Afghan hot dog vendor on the upper west side (around West 67th and Central Park) tried to stitch me a for a hot dog and drink. Michael Franzese even says that Pesci knocked this out of the park. Talks about how he does his homework and it just flows naturally out of him. Couldn't be more believable if a real gangster acted it himself.
I cannot say I can imagine Joe Pesci playing the part of a leading male ballet dancer as realistically as Tom Cruise for example, but for this type of movie there is none better. He is very, very, real.
Oh, I can see him doing a ballet dancer role just fine. I mean, as long as it's okay for him to pull out a .38 and yell at another dancer, "dance, Spider! Dance the fnckin' drink back here!"
They were made guys. Nicky was just letting them know that they can't rob this place. Once they got the message they moved on. Its business. They understood.
Joe couldn't intimidate a 5 year old, it's laughable he was cast in this role. Anything that's got a midget as the bad ass was surely a director have fun with the audience.
I always loved the part at the end after he muscled the two guys out and the clerk says they didn't sign their papers and he dismissively shoves them back to the clerk and says they don't need those anymore.
The way Nicky walks in with his hand 3/4 clenched at 0:10 makes it clear who’s going to be in charge here. Then the relaxed authority he projects with this hand in front of him and fiddling with the toothpick in his mouth. Small details that make the scene work even without a word of dialogue.
Mine's, "Carmine's gone. (Pause) yeah... He left." That Freaks people out!!! It's ALL I can do not to bust a gut laughing when they walk away!!! 😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great scene - only 1:09 too. This is what so many filmmakers don't get: how much can be done in 1:09. Loved this moment, also the 'Can't You Hear Me Knockin' pan in front of the udder joint, and Frank Vincent tellin' the guy to "smarten up."
I saw it as two guys working, and Pesci says 'sorry, this is my beat'. They are allowed to leave but keep their rep (they're not publically cussed out or thrown out), and in return, they show their respect to Joe Pesci by going quietly and wishing him good luck.
Carmine probably wasn't even there that day. When Pesci mentions that he also saw Carmine, who wasn't there at all, and he left the Casino, that's a clear message for those two.
The best part is the intimidation through silence, when he doesn't answer 'Carmine left ? He's gone ? he's not here ? Carmines gone...nothing but a subtle blank stare says it all - they got the message

So was the implication that Joe pesci killed carmine?
I always thought that was one of his most authentic mob scenes too. Ironically it's where he holds back and under acts and is reserved and quiet. He does that a lot in the Irishman too. And he was fantastic in that as well. His most famous scenes are the opposite. There is a lesson in that young actors.
The look Frank and Russ share just before Frank sets up the hit on Joe Gallo. Not a word spoken but you know damn well what's about to happen.
Irishman was weak
@@kmoney604 What was weak to you? The movie or Pesci? Or both?
@r_man I think they're too old to be doing the flashback to when they were young stuff. The cgi was not good.
I think the one part that comes to mind for everyone is, when Denerio was stomping the store guy on the ground. That was real bad
@@kmoney604 Agreed on all that stuff. I think Pescis acting was terrific though.
Coming to a theatre near you, Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting For Carmine”.

Well, Godot never showed up, so why the hell not? 😁
But I have a feeling Carmine isn't coming either.... He's buried under a cactus somewhere North of Vegas.

They ran scared because they knew Rickles was gona come over and insult their suits and wife's.
Wives. Try harder.
Rickles was brutal in his day! He's lucky nobody whacked him.
This is a very underrated scene, quite powerful
My favorite scene in the movie
To me, this is the most important scene of the film. Nikki Santoro doesn't even need to spell it out. He just answers their questions with silence and a raised brow and they immediately understand that their lives depend upon them leaving, now, and forgetting that "Carmine" ever existed. Today, Carmine was their friend. Now, Carmine doesn't exist.
Historically, Carmine always said the balloon heads are nothing more than a glorified crew.

"He had a suitcase and everything and he left." That makes it pretty clear.

Pesci is in a long line of actors who came into the industry via comedy, but demonstrated his acting skills were much broader.
Presence is everything. When I was in my teens, my grandfather (an old school east end Londoner) told me..
If you get a few big lumps turn up on your door, it's intimidation, If you get a lone small bloke, you should be looking for the back door, sharpish.
cool story bro
Yeah cool Story bro, if your grandad lived there now, he would be Khan not cairns
That's interesting, what was his name ?
@@starwarsroo2448 John Manca

Yes John Manca, close friend of Scorsese's. Kicked off the NYPD for stealing Caddys with his partner.
They were both in Goodfellas...
This scene is awesome but I also liked him explaining to the banker exactly what it is that he does. LOL
I think that scene with the banker is my fave or the desert scene
My favorite is just a voice over.
Nicky-"Lotsa problems buried in that desert. But you gotta have the hole dug before you show up with the package. Someone comes along at random, you gotta dig another hole. You could be out there all fuckin' night, digging holes".
Where he stabs the guy with the pen is his best scene.
When he went off on Sherbert with the telephone or when he went off on the shit kicking cowboy with the phone
They way he walked up to them and hard-tapped the one guy on the shoulder. The kind of tap you nervously turn around for.
The most unspoken threat never made on film.
This is the equivalent of Carmine Sr. on the sopranos ordering a hit on Johnny Sack by saying literally nothing.
“What are you gonna do?”
“Me?

I'm pretty sure that didn't happen lol

One of the coldest scenes ever. a made man who enforces a casino...🏆
The stuff I've learned about the mob over the past 6 years...🫡
The guy the character was based on was Anthony “ Tony the Ant” Spiolotro. He was known to be vicious. He definitely could have pulled off that move in real life.
I believe that.
The man was totally unhinged for real.
Hell, he even blew off Mad Sam's arm with the shotgun he used to whack him in his own garage.
Yet with spilitro when that camera was on him you can see there was an underling menace there just waiting to explode - his viciouness was evident....
.
Legend has it that Carmine is still across the street with his suit case.
The dialogue is mwah! *chef’s kiss.*
really is a subtle scene.
if you've ever been around in Pennsylvania, New York, etc, you'll still find a lot of guys who talk like these folks; not gangsters, just everyday people.

@@danielstoddart You can see it around Pittsburgh too. Large Italian-American population there. They talk the same, just use local Pittsburgh words.

Great realistic writing
Well if it was someone else(who doesn’t know who Nicky is) he would have to insult him and threat him, like he did to that banker. Just by seeing a made men from Chicago in Vegas casino, and he tells you that he is with casino managers, its not hard to understand message. That was intimidation at its finest!
Wasn't really intimidation, just a warning that there's a new crew running the place so the show's over.
"hence...the Intimidation'....dummy.
They were made guys. Nicky was just letting them know that they can't rob this place. Once they got the message they moved on. Its business. They understood.
Its amazing that every mafia family knows every mafia families made men and what they look like, even if they are in other parts of the country.
Joe couldn't intimidate a 5 year old, it's laughable he was cast in this role.
Anything that's got a midget as the bad ass was surely a director have fun with the audience.
Pesci called them "balloonheads". I was once called the same thing, but then it got better with "buckethead". Life is good!

They walk to the casino across the street and lo and behold, there's Carmine, suitcase in hand.
This movie scene is pure genius
The best part is the intimidation through silence, when he doesn't answer 'Carmine left ? He's gone ? he's not here ? Carmines gone...nothing but a subtle blank stare says it all - they got the message
