INT. HOCKEY RINK - IN THE ANNOUNCER'S BOOTH -- CONTINUOUS
Two announcers in the slick booth speaking towards camera.
ANNOUNCER
It's a tie game here in Colorado as we get set to start the final period.
WIDE SHOT - HOCKEY RINK
ANNOUNCER
Your attention please, for this third and final period the Detroit Red Wings will be playing the Park County Pee Wee Hockey team.
Cut to the Red Wings' side of the the ice as they file behind the box.
Then to Stan's side as the Pee Wee Kids try to get in the box, two of them falling down.
IN THE AUDIENCE - Random people we've never seen before sit and settle in to watch the final period.
ON THE ICE - The two teams go to center ice for the face off.
The puck dropper stands between a big Red Wing player and Billy, who can barely hod his stick.
The WHISTLE BLOWS and the puck drops.
The game starts and the Red Wings don't let up at all. They play their best game, knocking the kids down and running them over.
A Red Wing Player checks Mickey into the glass, almost killing him.
CROWD
OHO!
STAN
JESUS CHRIST!!!!
A Red Wing skates toward Billy who is playing goalie.
Another Red Wing checks Morgan into the glass. The fans seem to like it.
CROWD
HOOO!!
STAN
STOP!!! STOP THIS!!!
The ref comes in, blows the whistle.
CROWD
AWWWWWW!!!!
MAN IN STANDS
LET THEM PLAY! LET THEM PLAY!

Cut to another part of the crowd where Randy is with Sharon.
ANGLE - on the ice - one ref skates up to the other as they listen to the crowd --
CROWD
LET THEM PLAY! LET THEM PLAY!
One ref shrugs and blows his whistle.
CROWD
(BIG CHEER)
The Red Wings shoot a goal and the lights go off.
Sammy is laying on the ice, hurt. A Red Wing Player skates up to him and kicks him in the head.
SAMMY
UGH!
From the box, Stan can't believe it.
STAN
Hey! CAN THEY DO THAT?!!
One of the red wings is holding Ike down on the ice and PUNCHING him in the face.
IKE
OW!! NO!! AGH!!
ANGLE - A red wing shoot the puck super fast.
ANGLE - The puck smacks into a kid's face, knocking his teeth out - blood flies everywhere.
KID
AHGHGH!
ANGLE - A red wing shoots into the net.
ANGLE - Another red wing shoots into the net.
Shots get faster and faster - more shots of red wings shooting into the net as time goes by.
MORE shots of red wings shooting into the net.
Finally the clock ticks down to 0:00 and the BUZZER sounds.
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS starts to play again.
Stan stands in his box, incredulous.
STAN
What the FUCK?!?!
IN THE AUDIENCE - Stan's dad freaks out again as Sharon holds him back.
STAN'S DAD
NOOOO! NOT AGAIN!!! NOOO!!!!!
Little Morgan is laying on the ice in front of Stan, he barely manages to pick his head up off the ice with blood coming down from his mouth.
MORGAN
I hate you coach... I hate you...
Back to Stan in his box as some crowd are visible leaving in the glass behind him. One Avs fan bangs on the glass - Stan turns and the guy angrily flips him off.
Hans and the Red Wing Coach approach each other.
RED WINGS COACH
Thank you, Dad.
HANS
I'm proud of you boy.
They embrace.
On the ice - the Red Wings are now pouring champagne over each other and hugging and dancing.
INT. HOSPITAL -- NIGHT
Little Nelson is watching the Red Wing's victory on TV.
NELSON

He dies - DEEEEEEEEEEEET.
Randy being utterly devastated (not because kids were beaten up of course, but because the Colorado/Stan's team lost) completes it

If anything, it turns the episode, or at least his side of it, on its ear. You think Randy is upset because Stan missed the goal and he thinks it stuck in his mind since- but it makes clear here Randy wasn't angry because he missed it. He was angry because he caused the *team* to lose. If any other player was in that position, he wouldn't have lorded it over Stan so much. It makes clear Randy cared more about the team than his own family. And that is what ultimately makes the whole thing work.

Well it goes to show you that life isn’t easy. There will be many obstacles and that each part of your life could possibly have a dark moment to it. Life isn’t a movie nor a heavenly miracle.
This episode might be very dark but it has meaning of what very bad parts of some people’s life behold. Obviously children playing against adults was pretty illogical. Stan shouldve just not let the team play the adults. The cancer child wouldn’t have died.

The way the episode goes from Nelson dying, then immediately cutting to the credits shortly after gives such a classic feeling when watching South Park. There are so many episodes of the show that go through a steep downward spiral right as soon as the episode ends, to give everyone the feeling of "what did I just watch," and it's perfect

I find it kinda funny that THIS was the South Park moment that crossed the line for so many people. Considering what messed up shit they've done in the previous episodes. Great episode and a very underrated one.
This episode is one of the darkest, yet one of my favorite episodes of all time
The dark shit ain’t phase me but this ep was just kinda humorless and bland overall. They definitely tackled more twisted subject matter but with stronger jokes than this.

Not just mighty ducks, but sports movies in general. I never particularly liked the genre because of its melodrama and imbalanced focus on one team's problems, as if the other team is some band of LOTR orcs or something. This episode tore the genre a new one, but it flew over most peoples' heads.
I like to think after this episode Stan went “oh fuck it”, let the cancer kid die and just got another job.

At 0:21 the Claude Lemieux (Colorado) - Kris Draper (Detroit) bodycheck into the stanchion was a subtle reference to the rivalry of these teams.

So not only did Stan failed his peewee hockey team, which caused Nelson to pass away, and even disappoint Stan's own family and Nelson's family as well, but it also would lead to Kyle and his parents to be mad at Stan for causing Kyle's little brother to get hurt really bad by the Red Wings and that we don't even know if Stan would get his bike back or not from the tow truck guy.

I used to heavily dislike this ending before I realized how great an allegory it is for how a lot of people actually act. It's like a universally understandable mocking of people who are overly aggressive with those weaker than them and build a huge ego around it.
The evil guys win, the good protagonist is defeated and forced to helplessly stare at their triumph, meanwhile an innocent 4 yo kid dies from cancer. All on the notes of "we are the champions". This is not only the best episode ever of the best TV show ever. This is life.
The good protagonist were the red wings they have the whole ending.

I know it's a cartoon but... having been to many hockey games before the Red Wings would NOT get away with this. Deliberately beating up an opposing team is grounds for a time out penalty at best, at worst, you'd be suspended from the game. So irl, the Park County hockey team would win not by scoring more goals but because all of the Red Wings players would be suspended and the game forfeited.

What stings to me most is that the cancer didn’t kill Nelson. Sure it made him go into critical condition, yet it didn’t take him. It was the crushed hope, dream and a broken heart that Nelson left his mortal coil. Had it been to Stan’s favor, a victory would’ve been a (possible) turnaround, and that’s the fucked up punchline.
