THE BEST EVER STATEMENT ABOUT LEARNING HANDSTANDS! "Because there are so many variables to work on, we must rely on strength to compensate for our initial imperfections."
Ugh. Just like with weightlifting, so many people who lift or climb argue with you that they don't need to stretch or warm up. Then they wonder why they get injured all the time.
1:01 Warmup 1. Assisted Pike Holds (3 sets x 10 seconds) 2:45 2. Chest to wall walk + holds (3 sets with 3 reps and 10 seconds hold) 3:22 3. Kickups (3 sets hold for 10 seconds) 6:09 4. Walking kick-ups (4 reps per leg) 7:03 Good luck out there!
I can’t get enough of your videos dude. Your explanations for each exercise and even including common mistakes to avoid - you are so detailed. Thanks so much for providing the content you do.
Thank you! V4-V5 Bouldering Progression Series video is in the works. Just waiting for gyms to open back up so people can apply the concepts. Stay safe and healthy in the interim!
@@movementforclimbers brilliant Also thankyou for mentioning in one of your videos in passing neil gresham's masterclass, somehow id missed it and its really good.
As other comments have mentioned, I appreciate that there is a warm up first and it seems like the focus is on good alignment and building strength rather than just popping up into position. At 33, I'm trying to minimize the risk to injury.
Pole dancer here. Starting my Calisthenics journey to supplement those skills. Really appreciate your progression video. One of the best I have seen. My only issue with it was that I didn’t have a lot of strength built up when trying the chest to wall walk and hold. I underestimated my own strength. After I managed the hold, my arms gave out. I was able to walk forward a little bit before needing to fall so for anybody new to this you should check out the video on how to fall out of a handstand. Don’t do a me on it everybody 😂
I’ve tried a few routines and this one definitely seems the most beginner friendly! Loving your videos dude, please keep them. Such a great channel, love how it links climbing and calisthenics in a holistic approach!
Damn, I remember my sports teacher trying to teach us handstands. He just demonstrated a (perfect) handstand a few times and asked us to mimic him. If somebody (aka me) had a hard time grasping the sequence and asked for advice, he only said "just put your hands onto the floor and kick up" and demonstrated it again, way too quickly for my stupid proprioception-impaired brain to follow. We didn't even learn about the "head aligned with shoulder blades" bit. I have a really, really hard time learning (or even recognising) movements just from visual input, I see somebody do something and I just can't "translate" it to my own body. In addition, I don't have a great intuitive understanding of where my bodyparts are (like, if I do push-ups, I can't tell whether my back is straight or my ass is sticking up just by "gut feel", I always need a mirror). And I was still able to follow the instructions in this video! It's so helpful how you break down every big movement to its individual components!
oh wow this is really amazing thank you I've always been a weight lifter but never been good with body weight ans calisthenics... I was hopping this would help me do my first goal in calisthenics hand stand and squat to hand stand. im already terrified doing chest to wall walk lol but practice will make perfect im sure.
Here's the whole thing to save for your next workout: WarmUp: Elbow rotations in plank Down Dog Push up wrist circles in plank Down Dog Workout: Assisted Pike Hold (3*10s) Chest to Wall Walk + Hold (3x10s hold) (Face facing the wall) Neutral Head Position! Scapula activated! Kick Up: Kick Up to Wall (3 sets, 10s hold) Walking kick-ups (4 reps per leg, rest, rep. with other leg)
I hurt my shoulder (anterior deltoid region) doing too many hand stands too soon and so climbing became my antagonist training for hand stands and now my shoulder is better. LOL
I think you already talked about the pros of doing handstand for climbers in another video, but I can"t remember which one. Can you explain why in another video ? :) Btw you do an amazing job, I love the atmosphere in your content.
Great video! I'm glad you starting with the very baiscs first and didn't rush anything. I'm learning how to go from crow pose to handstand but without kickup it's pretty hard. Any tips?
Crow to handstand is deceivingly advanced. It's a bit of an unnatural position since your head is so in front of your shoulders and your hips are so far behind. I would hold off on that transition for now unless you want to work it dynamically. For a static transition, a straddle press handstand is easier and more natural to do.
I am really trying hard to stabilise my body in handstand. But the main element in handstand is to know the control of posterier pelvic tilt when we are upside down. Without it, its impossible to hold handstand despite applying all the drills. This concept of posterier pelvic tilt control is missing in this video. Wud be really happy if you teach us how to control the body while going upside down! Thanks!!!
Hi! I've been following the channel for a couple months now, thank you for doing this. Can you explain HOW handstand is a proper training compared to push / pull method for climbers?
Do you ever use any "drills" or "games" while climbing easier problems, with the purpose of making you a better climber? Perhaps climbing the problem with as few moves as possible, or not touching certain holds on the ascent/descent? I would love to see a video on this topic, if this is something you recommend for beginners.
@@movementforclimbers Thank YOU for the awesome content! I have only been climbing for a month, but I have already improved so much just by watching your videos and applying the techniques to my practice.
Great videos! Inspiration for me to learn a handstand some 10 years after I was taught the basics (didn't have half the strength or courage to do it at the time, I think)
That cake tho. Thanks for these helpful tips. I've been wanting to do handstands for a while but have never done them and this vid helped me out so much!
I just started doing this, never being upside down my whole life not when I was a kid. Even the hand walking to wall is hard for me at this stage, especially coming down, I feel my shoulder and wrist strength is not enough, especially wrists.
Went down to read the comments and noticed you just published the video 🙈Great content, as usual. I'll start practising handstands, it seems like a natural evolution after rock climbing for a while. Do you also climb with rope (natural or gym) or just boulder?
Doing these preparations makes me wonder if it is correct to look on the floow between the thumbs, or it's also good to keep the gaze straight, parallel with the ground?
I tried your workout plan, but already had to adjust it. Since Im so heavy, I try to do the warmup and the pike-hold to build the strength first. Will see how long it takes me :) Thanks a lot for this video! Hiw often would you train per week? Daily?
Brilliant video! Thanks for sharing. I do have a question. After you kick up, how do you control the speed at which your legs come down to the floor? While practicing, my legs would drop down suddenly. How do i control the pace?
Great video. Thanks. As a novice I am unable to get chest to wall as I don’t have the strength in my upper body to walk on my hands. I have no problem with the pike and can hold for 1min. What do you recommend?

Hey thanks for these wonderfull videos, i'd just have a doubt concerning the arms, could you please help ? I do not Know if the elbows have to "look" behind me like they are aligned with my body or if i turn them to the outside, as if the intern part was looking each other? Thank you sooo much in advance
I know this is 8 months late but I was in the same position because I was heavy - weight loss helped but initially I couldn’t walk all the way up the wall, I went as far as I could to and stopped there for my hold. I wasn’t all the way up against the wall but eventually I could after doing it that way for a while
Hey! So today was my first time attempting these exercises and I couldn’t (like at all) so the chest to wall walk, nor the hold (since i couldn’t get to the wall). Any tips on that? Would I still be able to improve and progress even though I can’t do it?
Any tips for the pike pose for people with tight hamstrings (other than stretching)? I have avoided doing the pike hold because my lower back rounds and my hamstrings are tight, keeping me from have straight legs.
Stage 2 of the series is here!
