Maxxarcade Mine broke recently. Picked it up and heard the tell tale rattle of broken plastic rivets. '93 model 1391401 with a 10ft 'server' cable. Explains why all the keys in the bottom left hand corner were sticking down. Found the key barrel frame was cracked when I was taking it apart to bolt mod it, too. Just got a new frame from Unicomp and a bunch of M2x8 bolts, M2 nuts, and M2 washers in the mail today. Once I mod it, _THEN_ it'll never break.
Those Dell keyboards are a few years old. While they're no Model M, they at least have decent key travel and an OK feel for rubber dome. The older keyboards were made in a much more robust fashion than the keyboards of today. Most times I know of people replacing their keyboard because they replaced their computer, and the computer came with a new keyboard. The old ones get put in a shelf somewhere, waiting for guys like us for them to be offered to.
daaamn, those Dell keyboards are durable as hell. I have one of them brand new old stock that i opened not too long ago. definitely keeping that one around now!
I have an old Dell Quiet Key and it's awesome. Love them. Newer keyboards are really cheap and flimsy. The older ones are more rugged and nicer to type on. I think those ones still work because it's hard for water to get into the keyboard. It seems there's only little holes for the keys plus the membrane over top so I don't see water getting in there easily. In any case dismantling them and drying them out would take care of that I think. Cool video! :)
Computer stuff it's interesting....but.....you are the king of audio devices repair and restoration! The Pioneer SA-8800 restoration video it's still one of the best project you worked on... Would be really nice, one day, to open your channel and see something like "Yamaha CA-1010 integrated amplifier restoration and test"...what do you think ?
do you know of any other funny noises the computer will make other then stickykeys? shift 5 times then click yes then click ctrl a bunch then click shift again?
Are the dell kboards ps2 or USB if its ps2 I have many as well! Good to know thank you for the 411 and video. I believe you said ps2 I live a California desert, I wonder how they fair in this environment.
Hello. Im curious where u are located. Im in CT. The reason i ask is i have two pioneer elite vsx-99's. About 15 years ago my original ones left channel started make thump thump dound so i imediately shut it off. I paid radioshack to fix it, they notified me they cant get part to fix and when shipping it back to me the shipper dropped it . I made them replace it. I found one on ebay that was missing the wood side on the opposit side of my dropped one. They paid for it and i put my wood side on it. About 2 years ago the second ones left channel did ssme. Im curious if ur close enough and have time do u think u could possibly make one good out of both. I also have an older kenwood 600watt amp that needs repair as well. The kenwood was given to me but i never had it repaired. U can have the kenwood would go nicely with ur kenwood setup. I have no idea what would cost me to have u fix if possible. That elite pioneer id kill to have back. Was my favorite stereo. Im legally blind since birth so the onscreen total vontrol i miss badly. My first was cost me 2999$new im on disability so took me almost a year to save and purchase then. It always powered my cerwin vega 15 inch dpeakers. There top model they are 4ohm so no other amp i can afford can power them. I thought u were very far till see ur last video. We got snow yoday here.
Shipping is so crazy! Maxxxxxx I think could fix even a battleship, or rocket, or wristwatch. But the shipping to Michigan will eat you up! You can afford it I'm sure... I sent an 8 pound package round trip from NC to CA and back, it was 148 bucks...
I gotta admit, the old Dell keyboards you had in the truck bed are indestructible with a good feel. As for the keyboards of now, it reminds me of how I miss the good old days, where buckling springs roam and keys stayed in place after lots of use and abuse.
Sometimes if I get bored enough I'll strip down my older keyboards and either hand wash them in the sink, or I'll stick them in the washer, the wife doesn't like the 2nd one that much though. I noticed just adding a bit of vinegar in the washer really gets them nice and clean. The part that takes the longest is removing all the key caps to be extra ocd and hand washing them
Keyboards are durable, I have a stack that got in a house fire, exposed to heat and corrosive smoke, then got washed with water, frozen by accident, and they still work
for standard rubber mesh keyboards, they can pretty much all be thrown in the dishwasher and work fine afterwords. great for when you get keyboards and the previous owner decided to eat their lunch over it
Id not be in any rush. My side work here to earn has been pc work so like u im always messing with old pcs either from trash or from family and friends.
Yep, Newegg has the one I showed in the video, for about $150. The price is one of the reasons I wanted to fix these. Not to mention they are really handy. I prefer the older large model with the smooth touch pad though. Not sure if they still make those.
The roll-up ones have one problem - its key press is hit-or-miss because they don't have a solid backing like the one in the video, but its small size makes it a good companion for my Lenovo X61 tablet-laptop and I just carry with it a blank fiberglass circuit board cut to the same dimension to rest the keyboard on.
Of course it worked. It's a Dell keyboard. They take a lo tof abuse since there made for the business environment. I just wash mine out every once in awhile and put it back together and were good for another year. Been pounding on that for years. LOL
I guess it's the same for older IBM keyboard. I've got a KB-0225 that used to stay into the garage for years and I'm using it right now. I didn't even deeply cleaned it lol
nice keypad!!, i still love the unicomps & model ms best!!!!!!
Great video and happy thanksgiving.
I have a keyboard that I got with a Dimension 2400 that has been through the wash, stepped on, dropped, smashed and bashed, yet it keeps truckin'!
i have those same keyboards i am gonna try it with washing under water an you get the results when i am completely done with them
Those Keyboards are WATERPROOF
fixing... a keyboard?? If its not a model M, I dont fix it, and i pitch it.
I'm here to reply using a Model M, What if it is a Model F or the 122 Key models?
If it's a Model M, it doesn't usually break LOL.
Very true

Way to go Dell! Those silicone keyboards are cool, reminds me a little of the Surface Touch Cover crossed with an old Sinclair ZX 81 lol
Lol got really happy when you showed that computer parts, Loves your computer videos ! :)

The mice that came with those keyboards are very durable too, provided that their tracking assembly is kept clean.

I'm surprised by the resilience of those Dell keyboards usually a glass of water is enough to take them out temporarily till they dry or permanently.
I never understand why industrial keyboards have small keys. Is it because the manufacturer thinks that the user will not type a lot on at in one use?
I wonder how resilient something like a cherry MX keyboard is. Not willing to test it with mine though.
Id not be in any rush. My side work here to earn has been pc work so like u im always messing with old pcs either from trash or from family and friends.
definitely make a video on that gigabyte mobo and amd cpu!
theirs not that much to a keyboard to get damaged
Haven't seen one of those in a while, we had those when I worked as a meat cutter and yeah the cord was the first thing to go.
Sweet, a Maxxarcade video
great video and it's great to see u again
Can you even find those type of water tight keyboards brand new anymore?
Sure can. I have a roll-up USB rubber keyboard bought years ago that is still available. In fact I just saw it on Amazon.ca for $5.

Ya, I like these older ones. The newer slimline models don't feel all that great to me.
Maxxarcade LOL Whats a new keyboard? LOL Havent felt one of them on my fingers in years. Unless they were the $10 big lots special. lol.
I guess it's the same for older IBM keyboard. I've got a KB-0225 that used to stay into the garage for years and I'm using it right now. I didn't even deeply cleaned it lol
Jeffrey Benshoff lol I just ran my dell keyboard under a tap and it still works
Maxxarcade What was that keyboard you used to have that had built in speakers and was rare?
The old Intergraph keyboard? It's still laying around. Not sure of the model number, but I can look some time.
Maxxarcade Yeh! That keyboard was such a beast. Was it mechanical or just rubber dome?
Wobbled Rubber dome.
