Blue Jay Alarm Calls and Imitating a Sharp-shinned Hawk

  • In the video, a female Blue jay I have known for 5 years, makes a few different alarm calls. The first one is a call I have only heard her make. I know about 20 blue jays and haven't witnessed the others making it, that isn't to say that they don't though. When she makes this call it can be for either hawks or crows.
The second call is of her imitating a Sharp-shinned hawk. They use this imitating of hawks to alert other jays and also sometimes to decieve others into thinking a hawk is around. In this case she was alerting her mate of a Sharp-shinned hawk that was near. The last call is just a regular jay alarm, again letting her mate know of the hawk.

Thank you for sharing this! Blue Jays are such wonderful imitators! I knew one who seemed to like doing it for fun and food. He was a convincing Red Shouldered Hawk imitator, and would perch atop the tree where I fed the Blue Jays peanuts. He'd do his imitation and even squirrels would scatter. Then he'd hop down and have all the peanuts to himself. :) I have to believe he chuckled too !

    Hey there Lesley,
I keep up with an extended family of blue jays in my back yard and just heard a new call for the first time today. It was a single very loud and emphatic 'squawk' similar to a parrot. I was under the bush and tree where it happened and immediately found out what this new call meant. It meant a Cooper's Hawk had just swooped into the same tree and almost got the blue jay. After this event and the single squawk, the entire jay family in neighboring trees went crazy sounding the 'hawk' alarm. But then I saw the hawk again in hunting mode. Apparently the jays could not scare off this hawk. So another amazing thing happened; the jay family signaled each other and went in to total 'silent mode'. Not a peep for over 10 long minutes as they hunted for the location of this hawk. Even at my bird feeder and water fountain they stayed totally silent and secretive. They would land, drink, and fly off in silence...two at a time. One was on the look out guarding the other! Finally the hawk left to go hunt elsewhere.
All for now. I thoroughly find blue jays some of my very favorite (and the smartest Corvids!) around. I always enjoy your bird nerd videos! Keep up the great work! David P. / Houston,Texas

I know this is off topic
As a child we raised an abandoned Blue Jay.
Bob Seger had a popular song on the radio.
Our Jay imitated it to perfection.
Thankfully it figured out how to get out and left us.
They are incredibly Intelligent. I worried about it for a while but it showed up several times later, healthy and with mate.
    How do I know?
Because it was still partially calm with me.
    Miss him 40 years later.
Grateful to my parents for keeping him alive till he could eat on his own.

Awesome video I didn't know they did that. I will have to listen more carefully. Thanks. I think my Jays have a call to let the other Jays know that the feeder is full again. :-) They also have a call to let me know when it is empty. LOL

Lol. They definitely have a call for when the feeder is full again, and I wouldn't be surprised if they have a call for when it's empty :D

What a cool video, Lesley! I too love your subtitles. Makes the videos more personal, like we're checking in on an old friend! So cool you have known this Blue Jay for five years. :) I enjoyed watching some Blue Jays yesterday at the house where I get my hair cut! There were many birds: Blue Jays, Chickadees, Gold Finches (all drab for winter!), some woodpeckers, White-Breasted Nuthatches, and House Finches! Some even came right up to the window where I was sitting.

Scrub Jays here always alert the other birds when the local coopers hawks are near. Jays are by far my favorite of all birds, so smart, feisty and brave.

Wonderful video! I've heard blue jays here imitating red-tailed hawks, and another You Tuber has recorded them imitating red-shouldered hawks before, I think this one was trying to scare everyone in the forest, it did the hawk call, and then alarmed about it XD Have a great day!

Hahaha, Yea a real terroriser lol. The only bird of prey calls I've heard the jays imitate are the sharp-shinned, goshawk, and Merlin. Would love to hear the red-shouldered hawk calls they make..

Ok, now I know why they do it, I was just about to ask why they would do that and then I read a comment to hog all the peanuts LOL. But you would think by making the hawk sound it would cause one to come looking.

      Hello, thank you :)
She seems to use that the sharp-shinned hawk for other hawks, too because I've seen her do it when a Northern Goshawk is around. Those are the only two that I've witnessed her making it for though. Thanks for the question

You're welcome, and thank you for answering. Our The Jays here have a similar silhouette, and also act like the forrest alarm, but a totally different colour and as far as i can see from your videos, the behaviour is very different too, they're also very shy.
I've never heard one imitating a bird of prey, that is awesome! Imagine how smart these birds are!
