  • Hi, this video shows you how install or extend a USB device or cable over CAT5E/CAT6 Ethernet Network wiring. It is useful when you need to have you USB devices more than 5m away. In this video I show you how to connect up a Xbox One controller over a 10m Ethernet patch cable.
    Many thanks Vince

I needed to plug a USB hub about 10 meters away from a host. Cheap cable failed, and active cables with redrivers range from 50-150 bucks. So I hit up google and would up here.
This is a great guide and still very relevant 4 years after you made it, big up!

Thanks for the video. I am wiring a voice over studio and had need to run a usb cable about 25 - 30 feet. I am using a powered hub for signal quality but this did the trick. I am now running my mic over usb - cat5e and the signal quality is preserved. Thanks again!

Just successfully completed a 50ft cat5 extension to two daisy chained Wyze Cams. All power supplied by 2A usb charger. Second cam has an 11ft extension on top of cat5 going to the first. All works! In first test only one wire was used but in the final connection I used two twisted wires (one pair) for each polarity and ground.

This is not an easy task, although it works well. The difficulty is feeding the USB wires into the RJ45 plug. The data pair (green and white) are small enough gauge to fit into the tiny channels of the plug. However the power pair (red and black)are much thicker and the fit is very, very tight. Almost thought they wouldn't fit but managed with tiny forceps and many, many attempts. These plugs appear to be sized the same from one manufacture to another so patience is required.

If you only used single wires in the Cat5 cable, for each wire in the USB cable, I'm trying to determine whether it would give better or worse results. With less wire being used, there's less resistance over a longer length. It will not have as big of a difference on voltage drop, but you may experience amperage drop. However, with less wire, you also risk making the 5v power wires hotter.

There is a fibre optic USB cable from CORNING Corp as demonstrated by Linus Sebastian
which is actually what you are looking for, you will have to use a powered hub at the end that plugs into your XBOX ONE/PS4 controller powered by a wall-wort PSU to charge your controller as electricity cannot travel through Metha-acrilic fibre and is miles better than CAT5e/CAT6e Ethernet cable, the cable will be pricey but it would be worth it.

Thanks David, I will watch his video (I like Linus). The problem is that is really pricey but I managed to get the house wired up with the Xbox using Lindy USB extenders and I think they work up to 50m. So I now have one set of them to connect up the controller in my sons bedroom and one set for the backroom and they work perfectly with no delay (not that I can notice). I had one set from years ago and I got another set off eBay for around £20 (I think they are £40 -£50 new), but I wonder whether they are any different from the £10-£20 unbranded versions. Because the old set I had worked well I didn't want to take the risk with a unbranded cheap set but I bet they would work as well. I will check out Linus's video.
      Cheers Vince

once you get to about 25' with a USB cable the signal looses strength for devices. Just like cat 5/6 that can run 300' without a repeater, if you want a usb cable to run over 25' effectively it will require a repeater. Powered usb hubs work perfectly. Powered is a must though.

Have you considered \ tested the impedance (resistance) for one-pair at a given length? I ask because if you used 2 pairs for the power, the impedance should drop signficantly and perhaps your XBOX controller range would increase. Would be interested in your measurements if you tried this experiment. 3 pairs dedicated to the power may confer even less impedance.

    Hi Vince
I’ve moved my virgin router from my data cabinet which is in the garage to another room in the house. Connected to another virgin outlet. Which works fine and is giving a better WiFi signal.
I need to get the ph line back to the data cabinet via my wired cat 5e for the phone and alarm dial up.
Ph outlet is RJ 11/12 on router. I’ve tried Plugging rj11 Cable into rj45 outlet both ends but the ph rings once then won’t work again. No tone or engaged when dialling in! I’ve plugged the ph directly into the router which works fine.
If I use a RJ45 to RJ 12 adt/cable will this work or am I missing something.
Do you have a video of such and how do I order from you?

I have set up the controllers for the PlayStation 4 to be wired from USB to Cat5. This works great UNTIL we connect to the network Cat5 installed in my wall… then we get no signal at all. I can string several Ethernet cables into the other room and it will still work, just not through the installed network cords.
My guess is that the signal isn’t strong enough to cover the distance (even though there should be minimal loss of dB through the Cat5). Would you suggest using either a powered USB hub, or an Ethernet repeater?

Hi there, you need a direct end to end connection to the devices or this will not work, if a switch or hub is anywhere in the paths then the signal will not pass as they rely on packet information which is not present via a USB signal. Hence why dragging ethernet cables around your house giving you the end to end connection works. The best option is to push data lines only then at the furthest end use a 5v power supply to add the additional two-wire to your far end USB cable and all will be great ethernet should give at most 100mtr unless using media converter to fibre, then a much larger distance can be achieved but only with the data lines. Hope this helps you ;-)

What makes the huge difference between network wires and usb wires? Is it thickness, is it used metal/copper? One thing I don't understand is why you using network plugs instead of standard usb connectors. Also I don't understand why you don't use all the wires available in the network cable, a pair for one signal would be better than one single wire. You can also add an external power supply to the end of the connection or powered usb hub (so there is no power problem), you need to share grounds otherwise the data lines doesn't work.

I did it with PS3 and xbox one controllers successfully! But PS4 simply does not work... anybody was able to make it work for PS4 controllers?

Answer to an old question because I found out why when attempting to connect a PS4 controller via Ethernet/USB. The first version DuelShock controllers do not support play via USB, always connected via Bluetooth. Later version DuelShocks allow play via USB. Ordered and waiting for a new DuelShock to confirm this.

Hi I tried this last night, when I first plugged the cable to the xbox one and the controller, the controller vibrated and the X was blinking, and I was not able to turn the xbox one with the controller, as soon as I turned it manually, the controller connected. Soon after I got a message saying "low battery"
    1. The micro usb cable had no markings regarding USB 2 or not but I figure since it is a micro usb, it has to be USB2.
    2. Since the X was blinking, does that mean the controller was not really connected via USB, but still getting a small charge?
    3. I did all this with a 5 ft ethernet cable.
    thanks for making this video.

+Carlos Barreto Hi, if it was blinking it sounds like it is not getting the signal from the USB and it is searching for the WiFi signal.

+My Mate VINCE Do you also get a low battery message? I guess I need to make new ones and first test the USB before anything. Any idea why it might not be connecting from the USB? thanks...

Maybe try swapping out the Ethernet cable with another one in case it is faulty or try your USB/Ethernet cable setup on your PC with your mobile if it uses the micro USB to see if it charges and connects to allow transfer of photos etc.

+My Mate VINCE Thanks again for the videos. I got new parts and was still loosing connection. So I decided to bypass the RJ45 heads and couplers and wired the USB cables to RJ45 Punch-Down Keystone Jacks. Tested and it worked no problems.
I was thinking using the remaining cables in the Ethernet cable to run my PS4 controller.
