  • Watch the “Jaw Relation in Complete Denture” lecture presented by Dr Manase (Masters in Dental Surgery).
Why is this an important dental study video?
Accurate and reproducible maxillo-mandibular records are paramount to designing an occlusion that limits trauma to the denture foundation area, enhances stability of the dentures and restores speech, esthetics and mastication.
There are three different types of jaw relations
    1) Orientation jaw relation
    2) Vertical jaw relation
    3) Horizontal relation
Under horizontal relation there are two types
    1) Centric relation and
    2) Eccentric relation
Orientation jaw relation- This is the first jaw relation to be recorded. It establishes the relationship of the mandible to the base of the skull or cranium.
Basically it establishes the angle or tilt of the maxilla in the three reference planes, antero posterior, lateral and vertical.
To record the angulation of the maxilla, a plane should be formed with atleast two posterior references and one anterior reference.
The instrument that is used to record the centre of the condylar rotation along with a third reference point, thereby forming a plane to record the orientation relationship of the maxilla to the cranium, is called as facebow.
This prosthodontics lecture covers the definition, clinical significance, clinical factors, laboratory factors and types of jaw relation.
An understanding of the jaw relation record for complete denture will help in fabricating a successful prosthesis for the patient.
Hoping that this prosthodontics complete denture lecture helps add some value
