I recently got to see this movie in theaters and I enjoyed it a lot. It’s not flawless, but it’s definitely worth watching. If this ends up being a franchise, I’d like to see a TV series based on this film. Dreamworks has done this with many of their other films, even ones that bombed like Turbo and Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

I think that this deserves its own franchise, the ocean floor holds as many mysteries as outer space and provides endless potential. The creators did say in interviews that they had a lot of monster ideas for Ruby to fight and it would be foolish to throw away such a world with so much potential. I am almost certain that DreamWorks will at least give it a tv series because they tend to do that with most of their works. Also Vod and streaming can still save this film, people just need to know about it.

I agree with you, I watched it 4 times at theaters and now I own it on prime, I know in my heart that a sequel of franchises including a tv series will still happen. There has got to be more stories of Ruby Gillman, like what happens next, will Ruby still consider taking the throne after her grandmother retires or dies. Will there be more evil Sea Creatures to fight off or if the mermaids return along with Chelsea aka Nerissa, and that the krakens and mermaids can have peace among themselves and change their ways

IKR?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THIS MOVIE! After watching it in theaters before it came out on digital, I had a really fun time with this movie! I enjoyed it so much, that I saw it a 2nd time on digital! Honestly, I really don't understand why it's a "failure"! There's nothing wrong with the movie AT ALL! It's fun, cute, and epic! It had a really cool story, and really likable characters! Ruby is so cute, and chelsea was a really satisfying villain! This movie shouldn't have been a failure! Cuz it's a great movie, and I consider it to be another great movie from dreamworks! There's just no reason to hate it! My only hopes are that the movie's box office numbers will go up, or that it'll one day get a sequel or maybe even a series! Cuz i need more ruby gillman! I can imagine a RGTK series being about ruby having the best summer of her life, while also having to battle other evil sea creatures. It definitely has a lot of potential to be a franchise!
Everyone, let's give this adorable dreamworks movie some love! ❤🐙🧜‍♀️
If pixar's elemental got a second chance, why can't the same thing happen with RGTK?

I loved Ruby Gillman and I do see the issues this movie had and a lot of cut contents that would've improved the movie. but I think its a good movie but could've been better... The music and soundtrack is honestly the best part of this movie I love the songs and music of this movie so much. Also Dreamworks or Universal pls never release a movie on a month that is full of movies like Spiderman (I kinda don't like ATSV) Transformers (best movie I saw this year) The Flash, Dude who bombed japan, and Barbie like there's too many movies and don't release NEAR THE 4TH OF JULY WHERE MANY AMERICANS GO TO THE BEACH NOT THEATERS AND THEATERS CLOSED. Also for some reason my local AMCs didn't have the movie on June 28, their website didn't show any showtimes, not sure if this happen to anyone as well.
Now I heard the director and voice actress of Ruby apparently had interest doing a sequel or series (not sure if this is ture tho) so the movie ends with Ruby going to face a monster which THAT is a perfect opportunity to make a ruby sequel. Here's my idea. Ruby Gillman vs The Sea Monsters or Ruby Gillman Rise of the Sea Monsters and its mostly about Ruby fighting monsters that are silly, terryfying, to flat out dangerous.
Now I discover the movie on a short on YT and damn now that I think about it this movie barley got promoted and I saw it on a shorts and then saw the trailer. And the movie got me intrested in because its about a high school girl like those animes and past cartoons that I saw like Teenage Robot. And the giant monster battle is what made me wanna see this film because I'm a fan of Ultraman, Godzilla, Power Rangers, Pacific Rim, any other monster media. at the end of the day I loved the movie I wish it was a little better. Now apparently Ruby is gonna be in theaters in Japan in march.... idk why march why not December or Janurary because they'll have to wait and who knows if its gonna be another box office flop, but I do hope japan could help the movie since japan loves Godzilla, Ultraman, Gamera and so many giant monster media..... as well as High school girls.......
    Nice video btw

The trailers definitely caused the most damage to the film. Chelsea getting redeemed at the end, could've saved it since it would've made the film less straight forward in plot. Speaking of Chelsea, they should've kept her and Nerissa as two separate characters. For one, since there was a war between krakens and mermaids, it would've been nice to have more than one mermaid in the film. Two, Chelsea just came off as too likable, and considering the short trailer (which was so cute) the antagonism between Ruby and Chelsea would've been best at a rivalry level, and three, it would've diffused the trailers giving so much away.
Another thing, aside from Chelsea (in human form) and Gordon, the designs of the human characters look bad. Would've been better to keep the focus away from most of them.
But I do hope Ruby Gillman is given a chance with at least another film. I would like to know what happened to Chelsea.

It would’ve been interesting to see what Narissa’s backstory If there are other mermaids out there even underwater monsters, we never heard of maybe leviathan! Also, I think they could’ve done Ruby a little better like make her like protagonist like Shulk(Xenoblade Chronicles),Hiccup(How to Train Your Dragon),Sora(Kingdom Hearts) and Aang(Avatar The Last Airbender)! Maybe it would be better if Chelsea would stay Ruby’s best friend or maybe they could be rivals!

Chelsea wasn't a twist villain any more than the Fairy Godmother was. She tricks *Ruby* into thinking she's good, but we as the audience can tell she's bad news if we're paying any attention at all. There's obvious signs of her taking advantage of Ruby and her insecurity in the movie (she shows up by falsely claiming credit for saving Connor, her first reaction when Ruby is injured by the trident's trap is to impatiently ask "What happened?" and not "Are you OK?", etc.). You're either not very bright or you just didn't see the film.

    • @achinthmurali5207

@@WaspCameraInSpringfield thank you for your analysis. I was aware of the obvious manipulation attempts by Chelsea. However, they were also times with Chelsea seem genuinely concerned. She saved Ruby’s life and she helped Ruby embrace her Kraken side. Also, in the bathroom, she had a look of genuine sympathy. I know that she was manipulating Ruby, but I hoped that there was more to it than just a generic twist. Also, there’s not a real reason why she’s evil. Other than the fact she’s a mermaid and mermaids are evil in this universe by default.

      @achinthmurali5207 Год назад +1

@@WaspCameraInSpringfield furthermore, while Chelsea did lie about saving Connor and she was vain, and very stereotypical “mean girl”, there is a big difference between being a bully and being pure evil. In my experience, bullies, male, or female, or people going through their own insecurities and their own problems. Ask yourself if somebody saved your life and then gave you space after they offered you be your friend, but you said no, do you really consider them untrustworthy just because your grandmother says that their entire race is bad?

I'd be so furious if I worked on this movie . .
I thought about that too, regarding the case with the tentacles. It also seems that since she doesn't have a siphon to expel water through, her feet act as huge paddles to help her swim. Someone also realized that "Nerissa" - is practically "siren" spelled backwards!
Someone figured you can get moisture simply by living near a lake, or filling a bathtub with water . . but I don't see how that'd work out.
I was instantly enamored with this character from the moment I saw her, because I have a huge thing for cecealia AKA octopus mermaids! So this was pretty much a dream come-true for me! =) Very detailed and wonderful review! God bless and have a nice day buddy! ^u^
Oh and yes - Ruby definitely needs a sequel! Better yet, a series! There's so much world-building potential! It'd be much like the Abominable series. They can still take the money they've earned and start a series! It might save the franchise! =D

i could see a brilliant sequel idea revolving around the villain who is a long lost descendent of rubys family that nobody talks about for good reason. Since he was a male kraken and was jealous that the woman in his family got all the power and strength.
So he eliminated all off his family including the women so he can take their power and is the real reason why Agatha and her family moved to the surface on land with Narissa just being his slave. You can even take it could even go a step further by saying that this descendent of ruby's family was forcing Narrissa to attack ruby and her family in exchange for the descendent to free all the mermaids which he has captured.
But after the she failed ruby's long lost evil family member(insert evil name here) pulls of a Thanos and dose it himself. Separate from the is plot there will be a thing going on were ruby's life sort of takes a nose dive (no pun intended) were connor breaks up with ruby, rubys friends go to another school, Nessie gets sick or something.
And the reason why this is important is because it allows the villain later to to convince ruby that all of these things will go away if she joins him to raise the stakes. How this will get resolved could be that the villain did all of this using his magic in order for ruby to switch side and then gets betrayed by her ancestor making her fight back against him in a kaiju battle scene and who knows maybe Chelsea could team up with ruby.

I thought the Ruby Gillman movie was fine. The film is a good example of the "Flip the Premise" storytelling.
And if you are going to ask "What's 'Flip The Premise?'" (Let's call it FTP for short), it's a writing technique where you take an existing story and flip it by making the hero into the villain and the villain into the hero. And then, you write a synopsis for your FTP story. And then, you strip your FTP story to the bare bone but keep the story's concept and make your own story out of it. FTP is what writers use when they have writer's block. It's the best technique IMO if you have writer's block.
And Ruby Gillman is an FTP story of "The Little Mermaid", obviously. Ruby is basically the good guy version of Ursula and Chelsea is the bad guy version of Arial. Other FTP stories like this includes Bright starring Will Smith, which is the FTP version of Lord of the Rings.

I actually noticed that Ruby Gillman and Chelsea are both Ariel but in different perspectives.
Ruby is Ariel from a CHARACTER perspective (having a parent who is of royalty, who also doesn't want to them to go up or down the surface of land or sea, both fall in love with a human boy, both have 3 friends, and some more).
Chelsea is Ariel from a DESIGN perspective.

If you want original films to do well you need to market them. They can't survive on clout when they have none.

Good review! I had more problems with the movie than you did, but I do agree, it isn't bad, and it deserved much better. It's very sad that new IPs just get sent out to die by big companies like Universal these days.
And, I do agree, I'm not very fond of people hating movies based on similarities to other movies. There's straight up copying, which I do have a problem with, and then there's just coincidental similarities because there's only so many types of stories and messages people can tell, which I have no problem with. As someone who as seen Turning Red, I can see the similarities now that you've mentioned people have compared them, but I honestly think the movies are still completely unique from one another, any similarities are definitely coincidental, and, honestly, Turning Red never even crossed my mind while watching Ruby.

Ruby Gilman Teenage Kraken is another of Dream works movie, having its how train your Dragon theme style openings and ending, with a scene of Puss from Shrek, and lets not forget about the little of Scooby doo, too, and there is a change for a second Ruby Gilman teenage Kraken movie, there is a petition for a second movie, that could be better then the first one

You bring up a lot of potential re-writes and things they could've tried during your negative thoughts bit but I think all of that is WHY this movie bombed. I liked this movie but it doesn't seem like it TRIED anything. It wasn't particularly advertised very heavily around my circles. Even going to see other films I only ever caught a preview for this film ONCE. And after watching I left with the impression it was "okay I guess". It's too "by the numbers" to hope to standout

At 6:30 - As to why I think Ruby trusted Chelsea so quickly, let's look at her day: Ruby turned giant, she learned that her own mother had been "omitting" important information, such as the fact that they're royalty, and she met her grandmother, someone who she had no idea even existed before that day. Having so much information thrown at her in such a short time, it makes sense that she wouldn't be in the best place to make decisions. Also, she heard that mermaids are evil from her grandmother - someone who she knows very little about. Add to that the fact that her own mother had been lying to her, she might not have been particularly trusting of her own relatives. Then along comes Chelsea - someone who knows everything, seemed to be a proper friend, and praised the fact that Ruby can turn giant. Yes, it was foolish of Ruby to trust Chelsea so much, but considering the circumstances, it makes sense.
I've personally been "betrayed/lied to" in my own life more than a few times (NOT by family), and every time I kept latching on to the next person I found who just validated me a little, then betrayed me. And I kept repeating the cycle until I finally cut myself off. This was mostly with people who I talked to online, but it still hurt. Point is that it can be hard to know who to trust.
I never saw the promotional material for the film before seeing the movie, and yet I still figured out that Chelsea had less than noble intent. Even knowing that it was coming, the big betrayal still hurt, it was effective.
I love this movie, it's what has made me interested in seeing more movies in the theater again. Kind of wish that there was more, but then again, I'm happy with what I got.

There was no reason for them to pull the movie out of cinemas, the movie could have easily succeeded at the box office should they have just never pulled it out and leave it in cinemas for another few weeks
This movie was released on June 30, they suddenly decided to pull it out on July 6, yes they only made $5.5 million
