This was SO helpful, especially the draw inside function!! I’m a digital art veteran but new to illustrator and I’ve been looking for a tool like that in it for so long, thank you!!
omg thank you. Quick and to the point. There are many other examples that are 20 minutes long and I just couldn't watch. Got my project done in less than 10 minutes. Thanks my dude.
Pro Tip: If you make your textures black-and-white they won't alter the color. You can do that simply by importing them into photoshop and doing image > mode > grayscale and then save the image before importing it into Adobe Illustrator. :)
Hi, does anyone know why I may be having problems with this. For me the texture remains unchanged, without the previous colour showing through, when I go to soft light? Any help would be appreciated.
Yes, you can physically print this (but because the texture is a photo and not vector, it may be a little fuzzy or pixelated). You can also save as .ai, .pdf, and .svg with no problems
You go to "object" at the top, "clipping mask" and select "release". Or you can go to the layers panel and move the texture out of the clipping mask group
I don't know why it wouldn't, but drawing inside does the same thing as a clipping mask. Go to "object" (at the top of the screen) and "clipping mask" and "create"
The only thing that I can think of is that your Illustrator is really outdated. Just update it. It should be there on the toolbar. Try researching it if it's still not there
It should work if the text is rasterized. Just left click on the layer and find where it says "rasterize layer". This basically turns it into a shape layer, so once you do it, you won't be able to change the text

SO helpful, thank you! I just switched from Affinity to Illustrator too so I'm having to re-learn some things. I find Affinity much more intuitive!
This worked perfectly for what I needed!! Thank you!!
Awesome tutorial! Much appreciated. I switched from Affinity to Adobe as well.
Thank you - simple and presented clearly and at a great pace.

Hi, does anyone know why I may be having problems with this. For me the texture remains unchanged, without the previous colour showing through, when I go to soft light? Any help would be appreciated.
thanks... how would I add a fabric texture that would work on a repeat pattern of vector designs for print on demand stores?
I'm not sure what you mean. You may just have to do this for every single shape in your layers pannel
This method is great but only seems to work for shapes. Is there a similar method for adding texture to things drawn with the pen tool?
Object > Expand might work. It'll turn the path into a shape
Are these patterns printable in an .ai .pdf. svg. format the way you would expect, or will there be any problem printing something like this?
Yes, you can physically print this (but because the texture is a photo and not vector, it may be a little fuzzy or pixelated). You can also save as .ai, .pdf, and .svg with no problems
i lov
and how to release the texture? if I want to change the texture preserving mask
You go to "object" at the top, "clipping mask" and select "release". Or you can go to the layers panel and move the texture out of the clipping mask group
What if that draw inside tool doesn’t show?
I don't know why it wouldn't, but drawing inside does the same thing as a clipping mask. Go to "object" (at the top of the screen) and "clipping mask" and "create"
Will this still work as a vector image?
I believe so, but I haven't tried it out yet. I don't see why it wouldn't work, though
hello, does anyone know why draw inside in not available in my illustrator? i can't enable it. :'((((
The only thing that I can think of is that your Illustrator is really outdated. Just update it. It should be there on the toolbar. Try researching it if it's still not there
I had the same issue it was because my shape was grouped with another shape so I had to ungroup it for it to work
You have to select teh shape, no the texture image
I have the option to use draw inside but it wont let me click it. Can somone help?
You can achieve the same effect by putting the texture under the circle, selecting both layers, and clicking on object > Clipping mask > make
@@wotntarnation3012 This one looks simple, and you made a video with a single line of text
whyy the color of my circle doesn't show up? :(
Make sure the fill is selected, not the stroke. To switch between fill and stroke, hit x
hey man, do you know how I do this with text?
It should work if the text is rasterized. Just left click on the layer and find where it says "rasterize layer". This basically turns it into a shape layer, so once you do it, you won't be able to change the text
@@wotntarnation3012 right.. thnx bruv
Does this work for text too?
Only if the text is expanded into shapes. To expand it, go to object > expand
@@wotntarnation3012 Okay, thank you.
