How I Made a Better College Ranking

- College Rankings like the one from US News and World Report are horrible. But what really makes them so bad? And why do we still look at them? I found out the truth behind College Rankings. And it's not good.
So I built a better ranking system to find out which colleges are better or worse than you think they are.

Here before this becomes viral LOL. The quality of this video is outstanding considering the number of views it gets. I really loved your analysis on this topic and agree with most of your criteria for your ranking. Also, I am glad my alma mater(UVA) went from 24 to 23 in your ranking compared to US News.
UVA? My high school valedictorian went there. Such a good school.
Great video! As a student applying to some of these top schools right now, I try my best not to look at the rankings but instead do my own research and talk to alumni to see if it would be a good fit. It's shocking how flawed the US News rankings are.
It really is. What shocked me most was how confidently they present their results. Though I guess being more forthcoming might harm their commercial interests. Good luck with the applications!
Great video, I was shocked when I saw the veiws were so low. this will for sure blow up especially around this time of year. I am a highschool senior submitting college apps right now so this was super interesting to me.
Thank you! And good luck with your applications!!
This was one of the most insightful and interesting videos I have ever seen on universities. I’m applying to college next year and this ranking list will be super useful to me. keep up the great work
Thank you! That means a lot. Feel free to make a copy of the sheet and play around with the weighting. Good luck next year!
I like your vidoe because it addresses some gaps in us news rankings, but there are some things with your rankings that I don't agree with as criteria. However, overall you did better than US news and would love to see if other us news rankings about colleges are wrong as well.
If there's one message I'd like everyone to take from this video it's that no ranking is "correct." You should determine what specific factors matter to you, and choose a school based on what's best based on your ranking. Don't rely on my ranking, or the one from US News.
Best video I’ve seen in 2024 by far!
I was suprised to see Fordham go down to 110 , will definitely go over the data (it’s one of my options)
Thank you! Fordham is a solid choice. I know people doing really well that went there. I think there should be some factor that accounts for location. The value of being in NYC for 4 years is high, hard to quantify, and totally absent from this ranking. All rankings, including this one, are inherently flawed. Though some more than others. Have fun with the data!
Hey nice well made video. Slick editing too.
Where is your full list? You mentioned Nittany Lions fell steep.
Yeah I'm afraid they did. Still a really good school IMO. I meant to put the list in the description! I'll trade your email address for it. I'm a bit worried about linking directly to the sheet: forms.gle/3YDEmQfZqXSLmwp98
Well done- About time someone dug into this stuff. Do you have a google sheet with rankings +/-? Would be interesting to visualize.
I sure do. I meant to put it in the description! I'll trade your email address for it. I'm a bit worried about linking directly to the sheet: forms.gle/3YDEmQfZqXSLmwp98
Respectfully, posting my email directly in a youtube comment is equally as worrying lol @@AdamDoesNotExist
wow Im surprised this is only 487 views. great vid loved the analysis!
Glad you liked it!
Great video.
Can you do something around Business Analytics (MS).
There is just QS Ranking (MSBA course ) and US News is (MBA Analytics), both are way off..
Thank you! I probably won't revisit this topic because it was really hard to build the ranking. It took forever. And in the end it didn't make that great a story.
Do u have the excel sheet w the full list?
I meant to put it in the description! I'll trade your email address for it. I'm a bit worried about linking directly to the sheeet: forms.gle/3YDEmQfZqXSLmwp98
88th view! Your video was awesome man. You’ve got a new subscriber.
Thank you! For watching and subscribing. I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the video!
my biggest factor Id like to see in general is average class size for intro classes. For example, the university of minnesota has something around 20 for student faculty and avg class soze, rpi is 12:1, both have intro classes that are in big lecture halls. Cal Poly is around 30 for both, they're intro classes are in lecture halls but cap out around 65, this is huge to me, the intro classes can make or break how you learn your fundamentals, and the fact that it is so misleading almost screwed me in my search (valuing rpi and wpi much higher than cal poly, wpi does keep lectures smaller too, just has mental health issues)
I like this. I'm not sure metrics like student faculty ratio matter as much if you're including all the non teaching administrators. That said, I was in some big intro classes, and some of my profs did a great job of engaging large classes. Others... not so much. So the quality of the profs really matters, but is hard to measure.
Great quality
Thank you!
Ok you did Caltech dirty. (Not biased although they did give me a free trip from NY 👀)
Caltech is an interesting one. In a way, they do themselves dirty by privacy suppressing a lot of their data. I didn't feel comfortable ranking them against these other colleges with so much unknown. US News seems to just guess. At the same time, I really like that Caltech doesn't care about these rankings. They know they're great, and don't need news companies to tell them that.
Share the spreadsheet… we gotta compare top 100 AT LEAST 😂
I meant to put it in the description! I'll trade your email address for it. I'm a bit worried about linking directly to the sheet: forms.gle/3YDEmQfZqXSLmwp98
Top quality, we need more perspectives! But you definitely should share the spreadsheet- otherwise you’re just as bad as US News
You're so right. And thanks for the kind words! I meant to put the list in the description! I'll trade your email address for it. I'm a bit worried about linking directly to the sheet: forms.gle/3YDEmQfZqXSLmwp98
As someone who did not get into top 100s and even top 200s acc to us news i am going to wooster cause of the aid this was actually so refreshing to hear these reddit communities r so toxic
This needs to go viral
Thank you! I have friends that went to Wooster and are doing great. Good luck!
I noticed that University at Buffalo fell way off and Binghamtom rised but Stonybrook fell. What happened there?
I think Buffalo earnings were really low across but I can't quite recall. You can dig into the data linked in the description if you want.
@@AdamDoesNotExist ok, yeah cause it dropped like 200 and I was surprised. On RUclips right or the excel sheet?
@@AdamDoesNotExisthello, I can’t seem to find the data. Whoever you can where do I find it?
There's a link in the video description
@@AdamDoesNotExist yea I got the list you made but not sure where the data is found.
GREAT CONTENT, GREAT MUSIC. BUT NOT TOGETHER!!!!
why did you rank Caltech 395th?
The keep almost all data private which is really unique. So I had really no way to rank them. I think I mention them in the video. If they did share data I suspect they'd be very highly ranked.
US News gotta hire you lol
Make this guy ceo of US News
how does this video only have 88 views
102 now
I think the real answer is that my videos are all over the place. Some are good, some aren't and they're all different. So it takes a while for the mighty algorithm to sort things out.
And rising!
lol ucla is ranked higer than ucb
Yes it is
where is caltech? you just bluffing
They keep most of their data private, so I couldn't really rank them
Your ranking is just as crap as the USNews. Seriously!
