  • The trial has started of a German who had an arsenal of World War II-era weaponry in his cellar including a tank, an anti-aircraft gun and a torpedo.
The retired financial broker, whose identity has not been revealed, is on trial after the military police found the 1943 Panther (Panzer) tank in his villa in the town of Heikendorf in the district of Plon in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein in 2015.
In addition to the 45-ton Panther, a whole arsenal of World War II military equipment was seized including ammunition, a mortar, a 3.5-inch anti-aircraft gun, and a torpedo which were hidden in his basement.
The Panther was a German medium tank deployed on the Eastern and Western Fronts in Europe from mid-1943 to the war's end in 1945.

He purchased the tank from England, shipped it to Germany. The Wehrmacht rebuilt the engine for him. They are only old military collector pieces. What crime has he committed? He's a history buff! Leave him alone!

The funniest thing about this is that the Panther was actually built by the British at the MNH plant in Hanover after WW2 had concluded, they built several Panthers and Jagdpanthers. This one was rescued from a salvage yard in poor condition and totally restored, an amazing feat considering the time in which it was restored. I have heard that it was driven several times, so the story goes.

This sort dedication to very rare historic items should be embrased not punished.
Ok that man might have broken the law, but put that Tank in a Museum and give that man just a symbolic fine.
A Toyota 4x4 pick up is more a military treath then this WW2 historic relic!

The tank, I think has been 'defanged'. Probably other guns, too. I am not sure about the torpedo. If it contains explosives, then it is dangerous. If not, then it is harmless. The man likes to collect WW II artefacts. Nothing wrong with that. But, a live torpedo matters. In such a case, he can be tried.

I hope he was at least compensated (not likely, I'm sure) for the equipment that was stolen from him. Does anyone have any information on what became of the Panther? And what's the latest on his trial? Did he get sentenced?

Couple of remarks here from a former local (my grandma's house, she passed away in 2003, is 300 m away): You can find plenty of German news reports with more details about him.
He is quite a right wing nut, collected plenty of Nazi art and devotionalia (Arno Brecker), and some graffiti on his seawall (yes, fancy part of town) said "Dat KZ is al min" which is basically "I own all this concentration camp by myself" in local dialect forever, it's a public beach just behind it so he probably never bothered to have that removed as it probably would have reappaeared quite quickly.
He (or others) can own defunctionalized arms as a private collector, the problem here was that the law concerning that had changed decades ago, because originally it was all properly registered in the 70ies iirc with the Kreisverwaltung Plön which is the responsible admin for this endeavour. That said, he even used either the Panther or a Spähpanzer that he used to own back in the day for some local slow driving, and in the winter storm snow catastrophe we had in '79 he even helped others pulling out cars and clearing roads with it, as farmers did with tractors and the Bundeswehr who was still obviously a territorial protection army at the height of the Cold War.
By the way, his name is probably blocked out in most German media reports, this is the local (sensible, if you ask me) legislation to allow reintegration in society unless you are a public figure. Case in point here: With perhaps one formal letter decades ago to the authorities he would have never ended up in penal court, where he got a slap on the wrist. And despite me not sharing one of his political believes, he is mostly a harmless old collector who should be left alone. So even though his family name is scandal ridden from another affaire, that was perhaps merely a name coincidence (the name is not that uncommon) and why would we even post the coordinates here... privacy rules. But: If you are ever in the area, talk a walk on the beach, south of Heikendorf, and ask locals on the street. Nothing really to hide here, his garden is nice.

@@Oh-Jay52 Now I could be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere ages ago that the Panther is likely to end up being given to a museum. If they sell it off to someone abroad and the German government pocket the money, I think they will get a lot of criticism for profiteering out of the situation.
