Round. A more nuanced sound.
However I think it's largely irrelevant as much more difference can be dialled in with tone etc.
Thanks for this.
Nice bass playing. Both strings sound good.
I prefer rounds on these kinds of semi hollow deals. Mainly because you can reign the treble in on rounds with eq and a compressor but you can't get better definition out of flats if the pickups aren't up to the task.
Very informative! Thank you!
Im getting a Guild Starfire today for Christmas! This video came in just in time!
Excellent - enjoyed this
What a great Hey Joe cover, really good video man
I would go with the flats on a hollow body but depends on how or what you play.
Excellent piece, much appreciated.
Now, if you please, give us a compo of flatwound string brands.
We would like that very much.
Great video.! like it
For me on 4 string passive solids, I go for a Motown/stax flat wound tone. I use rounds on my extended range 6. When I played an active 4 I did use rounds, but the active 6 took the place of that.
So as for the question at hand which do I think sounds better on the demonstrated semi-hollow body? I think the flats sound more in keeping what I perceive as a good sound for semi-hollow. The rounds sound good too, a bit growling, but not bad. I did have a semi-hollow bodied VOX back in the very early 70's and I played LaBella plastic coated flats on that (yuck).
My first bass instruction had the teacher sort of giving my bass a bemused WTF look when he was checking out my instrument, the VOX. He was a great instructor, who was a grizzled old jazzer playing a early 60s P-bass that hardly had a scrap of lacquer left on the body. His first recommendation was save up a hundred bucks or so and "we'll go shopping" which we did. We hit a bunch of pawn shops in the D.C. metro area and came away with a nice '65 P for $125. I continued that pawn shop strategy into the mid '70's and had horse traded, bought and sold a lot of stuff I wish I still had.
I did pass up a Gibson Les Paul bass and a swap show back in the 80's, I should have jumped on it. And, I have given more than a passing glance at the Epi Jack Cassidy models, which I have successfully talked myself out of on 2 or 3 occasions.
Thanks Danny for a great channel! I look forward to your installments. Quite refreshing indeed.
I think that the Rounds have more texture, if that make sense. I like how it sounds kinda rough and with the hollow body it makes it sound really nice
LaBella short scale flat wounds On my Hofner 500/1 Contermporary bass. Just like Macca useses on his.
Xcorgi I have a Douglas violin bass with fender flats
Flatwound
Round sounded way more articulate. You really had to dig in to the flats to hear the notes. Rounds all the way.
Rounds for this type of music, but flats have their place in other genres.
What colour is that bass? It's really beautiful but I can't quite place it in their range.
Which do you prefer?
Danny Sapko Roundwounds!
Roundwounds, the flats make it muddy
For this mix and this song, flat wounds and fingerstyle would be the right sound.
What kind of bass is that?
Thank you!!!!!!
Why the lighter gauge for the flatwounds
what's the name of the bass?
flats for all styles
Flats for a hollowbody........ in my opinion....
No expert, but I think flats play a little smoother, and I prefer the sound. I don't have a hollow body tho. Not yet, anyway.
Flats on hollow bodies are the way to go
Roundwounds just have lots more treble output...the flats have a much more balanced tonal output IMO.
Tapewound
Get 2 basses with different strings ... fret-less hollow ... P and J .... acoustic .... Ampeg elec stand-up ....
