perfect is just about as subjective as art, no one has the same answer and it's always a matter of one's point of view in things.
the high evolutionary has his own idea of what a perfect species should be, and that anything that's not part of his idea for perfection should not be there at all.

Also, i don't remember that I have cried in a movie this much since no way home. The movie really crushed my heart into a million pieces with how dark and mature it was, especially for a guardians film which generally have a more lighthearted and goofy tone. But gunn pulled it off amazingly. They explored each characters in the group, they made you feel what they were going through, that they are going through a rough time and deal with it in their own rights, each character was important in the movie. Guardians typically has multiple "antagonists", in a sense. in Vol. 1, you had the Ravagers and Ronan hunting them down. in Vol. 2, it was the Sovereign and Ego. And now in Vol. 3 it was Adam and the High Evolutionary. Notably, there's always a weaker antagonist in these pairs; I think James does this to flesh out the world a bit more, showing the Guardians have plenty of enemies as they do allies. While Adam didn't play a huge role, he didn't necessarily need to-- we'll no doubt see more of him with new phases of the MCU instead

I feel like the point of the High Evolutionary wasn’t to be this big ultra powerful threat to the galaxy but instead a personal threat that the Guardians, especially Rocket, have to overcome. He doesn’t need to be powerful because that’s not his purpose, he’s threatening enough from his sheer presence and his actor’s ability to sell that presence. Yeah his motives are pretty simple but that’s why I think it works, “There is no god, that’s why I stepped in.” Aside from being an absolutely banger line it also perfectly summarizes his motifs. He views the galaxy as imperfect and is constantly trying to get that perfect world and species no matter the cost, he can’t fathom how an ‘imperfect’ species like Rocket can be so intelligent and goes insane in his obsession over it. He does not need some deep motive for his character to work and I wouldn’t really call him that simple either.

He can train his creations to do everything he can, but none of them can go beyond his intellegence and solve things that he cannot. He did have some power over Rocket through, being the only person he's genuinely afraid of and his reaction when he heard High Evo for the first time in such a long time was great. And High Evolutionary becoming so insane and obsessed that his minions actually turned on him (but not in the "redemption arc" way, just turning on him while still being enemies of the Guardians) was also fascinating because it gave his minions some actual, although limited, character rather than just blindly following whatever bossman says

Like he's dumb but also a child who, until his Mother dies, follows her command and doesn't know what to do until he learns about love and compassion from the Guardians. He perfectly fits the movie, especially when you consider this a unique take for the character who is usually depicted as this wise being made to be perfect, which James couldn't do anyways because the MCU version of Vision is an amalgamation of comic Vision and Adam warlock, meaning he couldn't just rehash story beats/elements for Adam when they've already been used it for Vision which I'm glad they didn't. I'm honestly happy we got a flawed Kid Adam warlock in this iteration, and I'm glad James took the character in this direction. He's def a character who'll evolve in the future

It was a bit too stuffed, but it was never boring. The movie opens in such a melancholy way compared to the first two and I appreciated that. It doesn't try to subvert your expectations later, it lets you know up front what you're getting into. One thing I don't know how to feel about is that (semi-spoiler) there's a lot of doors left open. For a film revolving around finality, especially given many of these actors are done with the characters, it didn't end on the weight it set up for most of the film. It even ends in a very 2000's animated movie way. I suppose it came full circle to the beginning, albeit in a different form of melancholy. Everything said, I do believe this earns a place high in the MCU ranking. It made you feel everything it wanted you to and, in my opinion, one of the most graphic and mature entries in the series. I mean, the villain is a glorified animal abuser and they show it in shocking detail

I just love the guardians. I really cannot thank James Gunn enough for bringing them into the light and giving me my favorite band of heroes to cheer for.

Definitely deserves more than 80% imo, but I get the feeling that I’m more so the target audience than Charlie, because I’m younger and more or less grew up with the MCU.
Really, this movie blew all my expectations out of the water. I truly believed it would be bad, not only because Marvel has been struggling recently, but also because I typically don’t think 3 hr movies are worth all 3 hrs, but this one was. Somewhere in the middle of watching, I was even worried that it would end soon, and I was wishing that it would keep going. I’m glad that it did.

I’ve got to say the music in this was truly beautiful as always with the franchise.

I lost my shit with Drax as well. His off the cuff "2nd best" while Rocket's dying was amazing. Or the scene with the motorcycle and Mantis lol

What they did with Drax and the kids was so sweet.
