As a filipino I dont see any threats from vietnam doing claims in the south china as long as they did not use any form of threats to their neighbors, like what we say it is international waters so we could share natural resources but we have EEZ that needs to obey. Unlike to china that they harrased fishermens, ramming boats, firing water cannon, and lasers.
Why is the Philippines pretending to be innocent? The Philippines keeps entering the boundary drawn by China, entering with planes and showing off by taking photos! Then why doesn't China sprinkle aluminum powder on Philippine planes? Why does the Philippines stop its ships in the disputed area?
The fundametal difference is that VN builds artifical island on reef or increase territory of natual island they already own and within their Exclusive Economic Zone. When China constructs artifical island to claim territories far away from their Exclusive Economic Zone and belong to other countries accourding to EEZ international law. So one guy is constructing a barnhouse on his land, another person basically moves his fence on the land of his neighbour and then claim those land his own.

So what is the problem if the Philippines took it. No country is owning that island that time. Every one is just claiming it.
The problem with Vietnam is that it has a land border with China, so if a conflict were to arise, Vietnam has more possibilities of harming China than the Philippines, and therefore China is more cautious with Vietnam.

I don't take side in any dispute/argument, but what Vietnam has been doing is totally legal on the basis of the UNCLOS 1982 to which 168 country members of the United Nations including China and the European Union are signatories. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) adopted in 1982, known as the Law of the Sea Convention, or the Law of the Sea Treaty, clearly affirms Vietnam's sovereignty over the Paracel and Spratly archipelagoes. Here is the original document --- *The United Nations [UN] reiterates Vietnam’s sovereignty over Paracel and Spratly archipelagoes. The National Assembly reaffirms the sovereignty of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam over its internal waters and territorial sea; the sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the contiguous zone, the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf of Viet Nam, based on the provisions of the Convention and principles of international law; and calls on other countries to respect the above-said rights of Viet Nam. The National Assembly [authorizes] the National Assembly's Standing Committee and the Government to review all relevant national legislation to consider necessary amendments in conformity with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea [UNCLOS], and to safeguard the interests of Viet Nam.* (un.org)

China occupied Vietnam’s Hoang Sa archipelago in 1974. They illegally built military bases on the archipelago. Vietnam only built islands on a very small scale to protect Vietnam’s islands in the Truong Sa archipelago. China has built on a scale thousands of times larger than Vietnam’s before. And now, not only do they want to occupy the entire Truong Sa archipelago, they also intend to occupy the shoals on Vietnam’s southern continental shelf. China’s greed is endless.
@bigbear9288 The French took it from China when they were weak, when China was at war with Japan. Then a few years later Japan look the islands as they recognised it was Chinese land. Basically world powers all recognised they were Chinas.
The only reason South Vietnam had control over the islands was because after the French left, SV had control over it. But too bad for the SV, North Vietnams Prime Minister Pham (also 1st Prime minister of Unified Vietnam) sent a letter to China in 1958 "acknowledging" and "respecting" Chinas claim over the Paracel and Spratly islands. You have it backwards. China copied Vietnam, which has been island building since the 90s, albeit at a different pace.
After the war in 1975, the US left behind many advanced aircraft and tons of bombs in Vietnam. It is certain that China is no match for Vietnam in battles around the Spratly Islands at that time. The Vietnamese remained calm enough to avoid conflict with China in 1988 when they suddenly occupied some islands.
Looking back now, I can see how clever our leaders were at that time for not attempting to reclaim the islands. We might have won that war and regained all those islands, but what would have happened next would have been far more dangerous. We could have been stuck in a prolonged conflict, and our country might never have become as strong as it is today.
Not that clever lol. You fed and armed Pol Pot -> they betrayed you and stabbed you in the back. You listened to Chinese advisors for 20 years and they slapped you hard in 1979. You followed the Soviets for aids, they collapsed in 1989. None of your geopolitical allies worked out, they all either betrayed you or disappeared.

@@ghiju6393 you mentioned good point! Philipinos stranded their broken ship over China's island and indeed made much pollution to sea life.

@major0joy Actually, its the other way round. Vietnam started building artificial islands BEFORE China did. Then China copied them. So your "why not" should be directed to China, not Vietnam.
@@yerri5567well Vietnam is actually in the area, so fair enough. China has no business on these islands.
@@nicktubby9710 Vietnam is "in the area"? Take out a ruler and look at the map. The distance between the closest point from Spratly to Vietnam is about the closest point from Spratly to Hainan, China. So if you agree Vietnam is in the area, then by your logic China is also in the area.
Go Vietnam!
Afaik they somehow learned to build that construct ship (that can directly expanding the island by sucking the undersea sand) themself, from that moment their speed of expanding is increasing more and more.
Back then they can only bring the construction materials from the mainland through ship, that made the expanding progress very slow.
So yes, they are copying the Chinese by copying their game-changing technology (how ironic).

If there's any country that should reclaim these islands, it should be all the SEA countries within there, not China.
Vietnam already settled the dispute in exchange for China's help in the Vietnam War. But as soon as the war ended, Vietnam went back on their word and restarted the territorial dispute. And Vietnam were the first to build islands back in 2010. China told them to stop, Vietnam didn't listen, so China decided to build their own islands in retaliation.

If Vietnam is expanding their islands, why Philippines is not doing the same?
The answer maybe because China and Vietnam already has secret agreement regarding this reclamation. Vietnam is the little China of the Asia. And Vietnam is also claiming almost the entire West Philippines sea unreasonably just like China. So the Philippines should also be careful in dealing with Vietnam.
And to The Wall Street Journal, the Philippine occupied island is a natural island unlike China and Vietnam which are just an artificial island.
In 1971, the Philippines took advantage of a typhoon to seize Thitu Island 中业岛, which was occupied by Taiwan! Don’t always play the pitiful role
@@shkunwen I dont think that is true first even if there is typhoon you dont need to leave the pagasa island because it is big island. even now there are typhoon passing over there but the residents of that island is not leaving. 2nd if the taiwanese leave it means that the island is already vacant so anyone can take it. so it is the taiwanese mistake. 3rd what are the purpose of the taiwanese for occupying that island it is not theirs, Taiwan is very far from that island just like China. 4th the nearest country to that island is the Philippines. So what is the problem if the Philippines took it. No country is owning that island that time. Every one is just claiming it.
I love Chinese food then :D
The problem with Vietnam is that it has a land border with China, so if a conflict were to arise, Vietnam has more possibilities of harming China than the Philippines, and therefore China is more cautious with Vietnam.
