  • @jacobszymczak9323
    @jacobszymczak9323 2 года назад +129

    Wow, thats a serious de-rating. Imagine if that happened while on the road somewhere. "Sorry I'm blocking the main intersection, my brand new tractor threw a sensor code"

    • @timderks5960
      @timderks5960 2 года назад +6

      Well, I'm pretty sure that would be operator error, since you would've been running the tractor ignoring the code for quite a while. Like the description says: "... it FINALLY derated me", which I take as "I ignored it for a long time, and now after a long time it derated the tractor". So yeah, blame the tractor all you want, but it would be operator error in that case.

      @@timderks5960 if you watch Mikes vid he moves on road sometimes for hours at a stretch. They farm 100s of miles north.

    • @timderks5960
      @timderks5960 2 года назад +1

      @@jandcco I'm well aware. That however is not a normal scenario, especially not in Europe, where Fendts are made. Sure, a countdown would be nice, like "You will be derated in 1h", and one for 15m and 1m or something like that, but it's just uncommon to have a tractor so far from home, so hardly anyone would need such a warning. And even if they were so far from home, anywhere but the extreme outback like where Mike is would have a service center within an hour's drive, so there's just no reason for a longer delay.
      Again: if you're driving on a public road with a code of which you know it's going to derate your engine at some point, it's 100% operator error. Could it be better? Sure. Is there a valid reason for it to be better? Unless I'm way overestimating how much time was between the code showing up and the engine derating (I'm assuming at least 4 to 6 hours, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was longer), nope.

    This happened to a trucker on Ice Road Truckers. He was in the middle of a huge lake when his truck de-rated. There was a real possibility the truck could have fallen through the ice. He was able to limp the truck to land but it looked scary. You could tell the driver was seriously nervous. The bureaucrat who came up with this should be locked up. These DEF issues have been a problem for Letsdig18 as well. He lost a good week of work because both his Volvo Track Hoe and Komatsu Dozer were down with DEF issues and it wasn't the first time. Recently he has purchased 3 pre-def pieces of equipment. He fixed them up and they look and run great. That's one way to solve that problem.

      A RUclipsr "Danger Industries" who does hauling in Canada got derated in the night, in the middle of nowhere during winter.
      If he didn't have cellphone signal he could be stuck cold on a low traffic road in freezing arctic weather, where a diesel engine at idle can't provide sufficient heat due to efficiency considerations.
      DEF will at best cost you money and time, if you are really unlucky it can kill you, best to disable and kill that system as soon as possible.

Tractor stopped he couldn't go no where. Got a hold of the service tech found a Selenoid bad. Had to go 30 miles to the dealer to get another one. Also found out why the autosteer wasn't working properly. Faulty globe. So replaced that. Not even 50hrs on the tractor. They all break down unfortunately it happens at the wrong time. The other planter tractor is a new Holland and that's another headache. It's sitting under a tree hoping the tree will fall on it! Our dealer was nice enough to bring up a tractor to put the planter. He's hoping we'll trade!

    Fendt we found keep tick over to a minimum and don't constantly use the TMS open it up for at least a couple of hours a day, it has a negative impact on fuel consumption but the Def system seems less troublesome.
    Like has already been said all manufacturers suffer with Def issues even our trucks, Daf Scania and Volvo all have problems with sensors.

    There is to many sensors for def. There does t need to be a quality sensor. As long as it pumps it should run. If it happens again I’d try and trick the sensor with a resistor so it sees what it needs to.

    I get the point of DEF / Adblue or whatever else, it does reduce the harmful emissions but you are 100% correct there absolutely should be a code or some sort of override that the dealer is able to provide if they cannot fix it immediately, downtime can be a killer for a farm of any size - my dads farm here in the uk would fit in one of your fields, but this sort of failure on a combine in the summer could still cost us alot. As well as the pain of downtime this issue and its frequent occurrence is also driving folk to hate DEF because its harming them rather than the goal of simply helping the environment. Manufacturers must do better.

    • @rickjanssen5942
      @rickjanssen5942 2 года назад

      Wrong. It doesn't change the emissions at all. It just colors the smoke white instead of black.

    • @bens8919
      @bens8919 2 года назад

      @@rickjanssen5942 sadly you are misinformed if you think that, its probably worth looking into it correctly and not believing nonsense. There is nothing that DEF or adblue that would change in smoke as you cant see the NOx emissions its designed to remove anyway

    • @rickjanssen5942
      @rickjanssen5942 2 года назад

      @@bens8919 Do tell. Still burning diesel at the same rate if not higher. Doesn't add any power. Doesn't remove pollutants. It's not like there is a carbon collection bucket hanging under the exhaust pipe. So other that burning a mixer of water and urea and making the smoke white, what the heck does it do?

    I feel your restrained anger, get angry the same way. Thanks for maintaining professionalism and being nice. So I'll say it for you: i feel like punching something. Producing electronic interlocks on equipment like this makes no broader economic sense, i mean what would happen if just a strong solar flare hits like the Carrington event?
    Our food supply MUST have top priority and better maintenance than even airplanes. Just simple, reliable and easy.
    Mike you'll prob never read this, but did you know almost all airplanes can be flown with error codes? In fact it's routine. Your tractor going down, it being this vulnerable is like an airplane deciding that since one IR sensor is faulty it will idle engines while in flight.
    Broader society has lost its bearings a bit. Too much of a good thing..

    Now that is frustrating. Normally you buy new equipment so you can work! I hope you will be able to finish planting without any further complications. Godspeed to you Mike :)
    That emission regulations are a bunch of BS! I understand and support ecology but keep DEF to cars, trucks and stuff that moves on the road where support is easier.
    The emission regulations should not affect farm equipment so strickly. It should, like you suggested, be made possible to override the whole emission segment of the machine and just kept you working when only sensor or electronics brake down.
    The modern engines are a work of art but sadly they are being controlled by an overly complicated and prone to error system. And the stupid thing is that it only keeps down the emission impact by road and land vehicles which represents only a few percent of overall world polution!

    I get the point of DEF/Adblue, and it makes sense, but it does not make sense that you cannot override it, especially as here it's most likely only a dead sensor.
    But interesting to see that the DEF tank seems to be heated by Coolant

    • @jakehohoho7534
      @jakehohoho7534 2 года назад +1

      Yep, they are heated with coolant. It is also the level gauge and DEF quality sensor. The first thing a tech. needs to do is a software update and bill you a loy of money. If the code is gone they will let u drive. when the code comes back they bill u once more to check it out. When they need parts, they come back with parts and bill u again. I have seen it more than once on this DEF sensors (non Fendt).
      In case of a faulty sensor, and if the manuf WANTS they could tell u to check the def quality with a refractometer, if it is ok they could build in a code that enables u to resets the meassured value.( often the measured value is a few% below the min treshold) And u are back in business, but charging u for new software is easy money.

    Our Deere did this to us this planting season. So aggravating to be at a full stop due to software and shit repair restrictions. Some of this can evidently be temporarily bypassed by physically disconnecting the battery for a time. Classic IT power cycle solution. Reference to try if you find yourself in a future jam.

  • @ytfan3815
    @ytfan3815 2 года назад +1

    It's a tank sensor and not an exhaust sensor problem, so nothing wrong with the emmisions.
    That would mean, or the sensor is too sensitive for the heating coil around, sensor is gone, or you have another kind of DEF than Adblue in Europe that
    triggers the sensor. Both should be the same, 32.5% urea - 67.5% deionized water, less problems in Europe.
