  • As our incredible 20th trip came to an end, we embarked on the journey back home from Kwazulu-Natal, a region that had filled our days with awe and adventure for 10 unforgettable days. With nearly 1500 kilometres ahead, we split the return trip into two days, capturing picturesque drive-throughs of both new and familiar places along the way. Our overnight stay in Colesberg marked a peaceful pause before we eagerly tackled the remaining stretch of road, brimming with excitement and fond memories. We sincerely hope you've enjoyed sharing this epic journey with us as much as we cherished experiencing it. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #kwazulunatal #strand #colesberg

      As always, we appreciate you being on our backseat on every leg of every trip. 🚙😁 I look forward to showing you this afternoon where we went next and I hope you enjoy this one just as much! 🤩 It was difficult to single out a highlight on our KZN trip, but the fact that we thought we weren't going to be able to visit the Blood River Battlesite and being able to in the end, made the experience all the more special. It was fantastic to visit KZN again! 😍

    Hi you two! How wonderful that you could gather 1500km of our beautiful country with blue skies, klipkoppies, mountains around and on the horizon, pretty towns with beautiful white buildings, all in 50 minutes! Pap en vleis, cuppas and mouth watering sandwiches! Wow!
    Thank you for this great end to a tour around some of the most fascinating places in our country. Please take a good, long rest. I'll be patient while waiting to be picked up next time.
    Keep safe!

      And there I was thinking that I could fit it all into one, uninterrupted stint! 🤪 It was a beautiful drive and we loved the scenery and glimpses of towns along the way. The beauty of this country of ours never fails to astound, even next to the N1 highway. 🇿🇦🛣️ Thank you for joining us on our trip to KZN, it was awesome! We did take a long rest and are now ready to share the next one with you! So I'll pick you up again tomorrow. 🚙😁

    We couldn't wait till tonight. Just had to watch it immediately. This was a great idea to share your "back home" trip with us. Brought many memories also as we know so many stops along the way. Loved that you took us into Richmond. We always just stop to fill up and buy something to eat and then off we go again. We will remember that nice "plaaskombuis" whenever we pass there again.
    You must do this again when you travel so far!

      I actually thought of you as we were driving past Bloem, I have many, many fond memories of that city. 😍 I'm not surprised that you know many of the towns we drove through or past. 😎 It's always cool to be in the Free State, albeit briefly. Do yourself a favour and plan to either overnight in Richmond or set aside an hour or two for a little munchbreak and some exploring. It's a fabulous place and we can't believe we never went into the town all these years. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'm so glad you enjoyed the drive home with us, it was entertaining for us to film along the way. 🚙🛣️

    Thanks you two for yet another great trip, as always! On that last stretch of your journey, by Beaufort West when you remark that this juncture is always where you know you are now homeward bound, made me think of how travel eventually breeds a longing for home and family. At home, we dream of faraway, and faraway we dream of home! Already looking forward to your future wanderings...

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  10 месяцев назад +2

      So true! As wonderful as travelling always will be, it's just as wonderful arriving back to the familiar place we call home. 😍🏡 Somehow, at Beaufort West, we always know it's only about five hours from home and it seems closer to us once we've passed that point. I think it goes back to our younger days when we used to tackle the 2000 / 1500km Limpopo / Gauteng to Western Cape stretch quite regularly, as if it were nothing. Thank you for joining us as we explored parts of KZN, it was a memorable trip for us. 🚙🤩 We're ready to share our next trip with you and I hope you enjoy that one just as much.

      I'm glad you took the long drive home with us, thank you! 🚙😁 In the end, we were so grateful that pap-en-vleis was all we could find that evening. It was super good for a meal bought at a filling station shop. I also love pap and sausage, but that meat went down a treat that night! 🍛 We're fresh back from our next trip and the first episode will be uploaded this afternoon. I hope you enjoy this series too! 🤩

    What a great idea to share your return trip home. Nearly 5000 km's and the Kwiddie never missed a beat. Close shave nearly missing out on that petrol. Sometimes it pays to carry a can of petrol in your boot. It is always a good feeling one gets when you are finally heading back home again. After all "Home is where the heart is ". Certainly enjoyed this journey and look forward to some more. I can just taste that lekker garlic droewors .The last time I ate a Wimpy burger was in George , and I was in Primary school in the 1960's. Just a quick joke that is often told here in NZ. I know that you will like it as you guys often make this saying on your trips. What do you call a deer with no eyes ? No idea.😂

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  10 месяцев назад +1

      Yup, we encounter many deers with no eyes along the road, on every trip! 🤣🦌 I'm glad you enjoyed this trip back home, it was a long stretch that's for sure. And always good to arrive back home! 😍🏡 The Kwiddie's boot is tiny and packed to the brim with stuff we don't want on the backseat, so there is no space for a jerrycan and I'm not happy with one inside the cabin, so I'll just continue filling up in almost every town, that works just fine for us. 🚙⛽ The garlic droëwors wasn't quite as dry as Sonia likes it, but the taste was good. 👍🏻 I look forward to sharing our next trip with you, we're fresh back and hard at work editing.

    Thank-you for taking us with on your adventures, the highlight of the trip was seeing Umhlanga in its almost totally brand new form, hearing that Sonia also holidayed at the Umhlanga Sands Hotel, Kloof was amazing, St Lucia incredible, Paulpietersburg and Natal Spa bought back memories, Vryheid interesting, Dundee and the Battlefields as incredible and the Drive Home, We are so glad that Colesburg could host you and seeing the Karoo in bloom ...the towns of Beaufort West, Laingsburg, Richmond...we have visited them with you and have fond memories...there's no place like home and the KZN South Coast 😀 😊

    I lived in Bloemfontein for 33 years but I am living in the Strand in the Cape now. I know the Strand well because when I was small I still lived in Johannesburg and I went to the Strand for the December holidays to visit my grandfather and grandmother. My grandfather and grandmother lived in the Strand. My grandfather grew up in the Strand and he worked on the Railways at Touws River and then they moved to Worcester where he retired and went on pension. After my grandfather retired he and my grandmother moved back to the Strand. My grandfather is buried in the Strand. My late father also worked on the Railways and he was a railway engineer.

    Wow what an insane trip! You already made me discover that gorgeous Kwazulu-Natal region, with amazing destinations, cities and towns ; I absolutely didn't know about this part of South Africa until I see your travel videos there. Didn't expect this much 'tropicality' climate-wise there, but this was fully different from what we usually see from this country and I liked it a lot!
    And then, the ice on the cake was this epic trip all the way back in Western Cape from KZN, meaning you almost crossed through the entire width of South Africa, that's absolutely fantastic! As usual, the landscapes, the roads, the traffic... really spectacular! In addition, thanks for telling us about your daily life and the immense work you also put on posting these wonderful SA travel videos on RUclips! 🤝

    The amount of times I've passed through Harrismith to either get to Durban, Clarens, Fouriesburg or Ficksburg, I've actually lost count. All roads leading to and from Verkeerdevlei are brilliant, so the R68.50 toll is certainly worth it. I almost tried traveling from Oudtshoorn through to Joburg, I got to Bloemfontein and decided to stop and book into accommodation. The drive between Bloemfontein and Joburg is crazy long...5 hours...I went on a round trip to Graaff-Reinet last year, and the last leg between Bloemfontein and Joburg was exhasting...

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  10 месяцев назад

      As long as the condition of the roads reflect the toll I'm paying, all is good with the world. 😁🛣️ I was really keen on driving all the way through, but it was just too far for the late start we got that day.

      @@DustBugsTravel I don't mind traveling long distances in a day, as long there's interesting things to see along the way, it distracts from the evident long drive. Oddly the drive back always seems to be the long and boring, while the drive away is fun and eventful...lol

    Hi guys thanks for the road trip back to Strand I must say Curtis you definitely get some miles under your belt blows my mind the whole trip was over 4000 km you opened up lots of places I've never heard of and some that brought back so many memories for me as someone who loves military history I certainly got my share the battle field of blood river and tugala stood out to me. Loved your memories of Bloemfontein and Sonias fathers birth place. As I always say love the banter and the laughter. The truck drivers camaraderie so real. One day you'll have to have a full English with black pudding lol I must say Sonias laughter is infectious and always cheers me up ..this road trip reminds me of some of the great trips I've been able to do .on a trip to the Insel usadom on the baltic from Kent my pal and I had got about 50 miles into Germany went to fill up and we were driving a old car that used leaded petrol when we got to the petrol station it had only unleaded petrol we asked the guy he said nix blie no leaded in Germany so we had to drive back to the Netherlands to get some we managed to get to Berlin almost empty and I asked if I could some how get leaded petrol the guy says no problem and said buy this plastic bottle and fill up with unleaded and put some liquid from the bottle and put some lead back in you can imagine the laughter. Thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

      I love driving long distance, so the miles literally fly by for me! 🚙🛣️ It was actually hard to believe that this was our 20th trip already! I'm glad that we could give you a healthy dose of military history and show you some battlefields too, those were super interesting to us as well. A full English I'll have any day of the week, but I have a way to go before I'll agree to black pudding. I know I shouldn't knock it because I haven't tried it, but the thought. Eek! 😨 Wowzer, that story of yours about the unleaded and the leaded petrol could've turned out very differently! ⛽ A road trip without laughter is just no fun at all, so if you ever need cheering up, we'll be right here waiting for you! Thanks for coming to KZN with us! 👌🏻😍

      It was actually our plan to fly to Durbs, but when we started making the list of essentials which we just couldn't leave behind, it was just not feasible. We'll still have to figure out how to tackle future trips far away from home. We have a few thoughts, but nothing final just yet. 🚙✈️🤷🏻‍♂️ I actually have close relatives in Inhambane, but we're still trying to work our way through SA before we'll decide where to next. We don't make use of any GPS devices, other than our cellphones. Since we often drive in areas where there is no cell reception, I've come to rely on MAPS.ME quite a bit. It's an app which isn't dependent on cellphone reception. I've found that invaluable on our trips. 🚙 Thank you for driving home with us! 😁 Safe travels to you!

    R55 at Tugela east toll plaza...and the road doesnt look like it is getting the money spent on it. Aha! Eastern Free State! So beautiful. Another of my very favourites. Had a few wonderful holidays at Golden Gate. You will definitely have to come back to visit. I have been to Verkeerdevlei! But we couldnt find anything wrong with it. So glad you stayed over in Colesberg. I was a bit worried about you guys driving straight through. My dad always carried a kannetjie petrol in the boot for emergency, I can still see it, an old square red container. Diesel? Yeah, see! One gets tired and makes mistakes. Good on you for staying over. Merino Inn was always our stay over. But back in the 70s and 80s there wasnt a lot of choice. Looks a charming little place you stayed in. Just that kannetjie Doom makes wonder!🪳🪳🪳Hopefully not. Love the donkey! Those stripes represent the Cross. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey shortly before He was crucified. When my brother and I were kids we had a giggle over Coleskop motors! I read it as Cole skop motors! And made up a story about this huge guy (like Desperate Dan) (Oh! Google it!) who went around kicking cars! Karoovlaktes! Beautiful!!! Land van ruimte! Hier kan n mens asem haal! I agree. Richmond is madly beautiful, I would go there just sketch and paint. What an amazing breakfast! That will keep you going the whole day! Eveready battery bunny, eat your heart out! You lose to the Fat muis!Now that is a meneer of a cactus! Grow some of those along your wall and no one is gonna climb over! And I see Skoonma se stoel there also! Oh, thanks for the please-explain, but I really do understand your position. Oh, I am lusting after that vlakoek! Forever forbidden to me as a fat person! Hope you dont mind me being so chatty! But I feel we are ❤❤❤❤old friends already!

      I realised that driving straight through would be irresponsible of me and in the end, I was relieved to saddle off at Colesberg for the evening. I've often considered taking a jerry can with an emergency supply of fuel along on our travels, but there is no space in the boot and, with the bumpy roads we travel on, I would just not feel comfortable with it in the car. From there, developed the MO of filling up at almost every town, just to be safe with the little fuel tank on the Kwiddie. I don't even want to think what would've happened if I had diesel put into the car. 🚙⛽😨 Sonia says I must tell you the vlakoek was out-of-this-world and a slice of a little something-something every now and again will not cause you any harm. 🍰😁 I never mind you being chatty, I always enjoy reading your comments.
