Abandoned by their parents and shunned by their village, life for conjoined twins Stuti and Aradhana looked almost certainly bleak. Their mother and father were poor farmers from a remote village. They decided the babies were best left with the staff of the hospital, who took them under their wing and mounted an nationwide fundraising campaign for surgery."They really didn't have a life if they continued to be conjoined," says Professor David Baines. Also calling in favours from colleagues around the world, the anaesthetist forms part of an operating team made up of 24 doctors and 40 nurses determined to save the girls. As the operation gets underway the media swamp medical staff: the twins' story has captivated a nation of more than a billion people and put the spotlight on the way India treats baby girls, especially those with deformities. "In some parts of India families find any girls to be a burden. They're not really looked upon as something that they want". With intimate, candid access to the marathon effort to separate Stuti and Aradhana, this is a breath-taking and emotional story of a battle for resources and acceptance.

I remember it very clearly I was quite small at that time every morning I used to read the newspaper just to know how their condition was and my heart broke when one of them lost her life. May your soul rest in peace🙏🏻 I hope you come back to life and live a normal life this time❤

Why are so many people allowed to be around those babies fresh out of the OR? Do they care about infection control? And I'm (not) sorry but their parents seem like opportunists. I realize they're poor but love doesn't cost a thing. Their medical treatment would've been covered regardless because of the uniqueness of their situation. I think the local doctors put their egos before those babies or else they would've been cared for in a more sanitary, top tier hospital. Post-op care is very important and if the staff (nurses, techs, radiologists, local docs, etc.) isn't used to caring for critically ill babies, especially recently separated conjoined twins, they shouldn't have been allowed to be treated there. Seems like they wanted fame for their village and hospital instead of what was best for those babies. I'm curious as to how the surviving twin is doing today and if her parents are treating her well since
    a). She's a girl
b). She's no longer a source of revenue

I think it is appalling the Australian journalist was allowed in the operating room and their parents were kept outside. It seems to me the little girl who died probably had infection that was probably caused by so many people being so close to her. They should have been kept in a sterile environment. Better still they should have been airlifted to Australia and operated on there.

It's actually not that uncommon for a mother to struggle to bond with her children at first, especially with an unexpectedly traumatic birth and condition like this. A form of postnatal depression and also shock. Not necessarily two-faced gold-digging. She was probably also scared that she'd get attached to them and they'd die, especially if they died because she couldn't provide specialised care. Perhaps she felt she'd never forgive herself if that happened, so that's why she came back when she knew there was a chance that she wouldn't be put in that position. You just never can tell for sure. xox

    • @goingunder2548

Why do people struggle to accept that some people just don’t like their children at all? It isn’t always postnatal depression. And the fact most of these cases involve disabled children is telling. Seems like ableism more than anything. People have to stop getting pregnant and automatically assuming they’ll give birth to a healthy child. Sorry but as a disabled person myself my empathy is extremely low here.

The doctors worked hard to separate the children, in hopes they would survive, unfortunately one little girl passed. Sometimes you cannot help no matter how you try and I believe they would not want to have grown up living conjoined.

I don’t know if it was all the people that cause the death as in the bacteria. Sometimes they’re just too weak to fight the surgeries. One had have a liver and missing three main draining blood veins. And they’re in a country where they probably don’t get the best medical treatment so maybe her immune system’s were naturally low to fight off such a strong bacterial infection.Shame on the doctor though and doctors and nurses to have so many people in these rooms they should be quarantined and it should be a sanitary as possible. I truly think that these doctors need to have a suspension and a cut in their pay. I think this little girl life would’ve been saved if not so many people were in there guarantee none of them wash their hands none of them were sanitize before they went into these rooms. .Rest in peace little one I don’t understand why everybody saying they both died obviously the other one is still alive.

I don’t think that it was like that. These people are poor, very poor. They also are very superstitious. See, the village that is their home can see this as a bad omen and chase them out. Off course the fact that it were girls didn’t help as girls are seen as a burden. The mother also had to obey her husband... I think she is very courageous to reclaim the children. She doesn’t know what the future will bring ... These people look different at things as we do. That doesn’t mean that they don’t care. It’s just difficult to have children in need of special care id there is no money. Most of the children in rural communities in India are malnourished. This would probably be fatal for the twins.

Saffron Grass no my dear, I can understand that you don’t approve of their behaviour. It is indeed an horrible thing to do, In different parts of the world people have different ways to deal with their problems. In the West we can give a disabled child all the care it needs. In underdeveloped counties however the people have no means to do that, even if they want to. Giving their, (disabled or healthy) child to a clinic or an orphanage is a devastating choice some parents have to make in order to be sure that the child will live. I know that it seems barbaric or uncaring but most of the time they really have no other option. It’s the overwhelming poverty and the non existence of education that are the underlying reasons for this problem.

I personally think they should of kept the twins in same cot after the separation so to have them stressed less as subconsciously even if not awake, they would of been aware the other isnt next to them .. and its terrible they got all the Aussie doctors away from their normal work to do it over there rather then in Australia. Maybe would of survived in not done there but egos obviously wanted it done over there.

Two teams of doctors were needed for each baby. Surgery was not “over” at the moment of separation. Much repair to do.

they are just joined by bellies. That's almost cosmetic surgery. I'm exaggerating but almost. how can you even compare twins sharing one body and 2 heads? Or joined by heads with sharing some parts of brain?

OK I lost faith in the surgical team when they did the practice surgery on dolls taped together! Was the fucking reporter actually in the operating room casually talking to the surgeons while they worked on the girl's hearts? That is just disgusting to me!

I AM HAPPY THAT ONE CHILD SURVIVED, BUT BOTH GIRL'S WOULD HAVE SURVIVED HAD THE SURGERY BEEN DONE IN AUSTRALIA OR ANOTHER FIRST RATE TOP NOTCH MODERNIZED HOSPITAL THAT WAS CLEAN WITH FIRST RATE DOCTORS AND NURSING STAFF SUCH AS THE UNITED STATES,BOTH GIRL'S WOULD HAVE SURVIVED. EVERY BODY WANTED TO BE FAMOUS AND GET CREDIT FOR THE SEPERATION. THEY PUT THE CHILDREN'S SAFETY AND SURVIVAL ON THE BACK BURNER. THAT HOSPITAL WAS TENTH RATE OLD AND FILTHY.

So they only separated them so they could live a "normal life" and that caused one of them to die. If I had conjoined twins I would only separate them if their life depended on (i mean that if they didn't get separated they would die)
