Fun fact, the Mosin-Nagant was originally designated a 3 line rifle. 3 lines being 3/10 of an inch, equal to 0.30 cal. Converted to metric, it became 7.62mm. The Soviets also produced a gun in 76.2mm (3inch) and doubled it to create the 152.4mm (6 inch) howitzer.

I have been waiting for you to cover this vehicle.
The SU-153 and ISU-152 were integral parts of some battle doctrines.
Despite how little history features it, the I/SU-152 was feared by the Axis in WW2, arguably just as if not more than the IS-2 vehicles. Even the heaviest armour the Axis had wasn't a match to the 152mm guns. The same reason the 122mm guns were feared.
As you said the 152mm platforms were used in the cold war as well, beyond simple warfare tactics.
One thing you didn't mention was their anti-infantry use. They were also used effectively as mobile Frontline artillery. Using High-Explosive shells in the infantry support roles. Being highly valued using these shells as due to their calibre they could destroy even heavy tanks let alone fortifications.
Sorry for the rambling. Some of my family were in I/SU-152 vehicles. It genuinely has A LOT of use to it not covered in this video.
It is one of the few vehicles in the Soviet WW2 doctrine that filled nearly every role. Breakthrough, Defensive, Artillery, Spearhead, Urban close range support, ect.
It was arguably a true MBT purely in the aspect of covering near any use.
(Yes I am clearly biased but hey)

You're right, but while ISU-152 was powerful enough to knock out most German heavy tanks, it actually wasn't very effective at doing so. Despite the power of its shells, the 152mm is still a field gun at its core. It was inaccurate by AT guns standard, and especially in usual tank engagement ranges, and amplified by the slow reloading times of its heavy two-part shells. It was best fired in groups, hoping the shells actually landed near their targets. Usually I/SU-152 were used in ambush as they won't fared well in a direct open field tank combat for above reasons. Still their anti-infantry and static fortifications ability are very good, though in close urban combat their performance is so-so as their length did make their movement around streets difficult sometimes.

What's worth pointing out, despite most games ( world of tanks, war thunder and every ww2 RTS that I know ) classyfing ISU as tank destoyer, it was infantry support assoult gun first and foremost. During WWII, ISU-152s became known as Beast Killers when these heavy tank destroyers were used by the Soviet Red Army because of their 152mm heavy self-propelled howitzers on their casemates over KV-2 tank chassis, they were used by knocking out Tiger I and II heavy tanks using its shells, but they were also used in artillery support to destroy enemy structures. They were used during the sieges on Königsberg (now Kaliningrad), Budapest and Berlin during the last two years of the war, but they were also used in Cold War and in the Soviet-Afghan War by the Soviet Army especially featured in various Red Square military parades and in efforts to control radioactive fallout during the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.

During preparations for Kursk battle Soviets needed weapon which could take German heavy tanks head on with one shot. Since high velocity guns 100 and even 85mm were not ready, they took excellent 152mm howitzer. It had no long range precision of German KwK 88, but could blast off turret from Tiger tank and kill crew by spalling armor. Even more important, it proved to be excellent weapon against fortified buildings, because it would collapse whole building with few shots. See about Battle of Budapest. IMHO, if Germans had some of those in Stalingrad story of Pavlov's house would have been rather short.

They might have started by telling the Ukraine population of the massive release of radioactivity so that children could be given iodine tablets and evacuated and precautions taken such as not eating leafy green vegetables harvested in the area. The Russians that ran the plant didn't tell anyone but hushed it up. Oligarchs and hushing up incompetence has been the way of Russia under the Tsars, Under Lenin, Stalin and the Soviet. The first indication of a nuclear accident was radiation sensors in Swedish Nuclear Plants on the other side of Europe.

Considering the poor weld quality on late war german armor, the sheer concussive blast of a 152mm high explosive shell could quite literally dismantle any german tank at that point.
Keep in mind there were reports of frontal armor plates on tiger 2's literally falling off the tank because the welds couldnt withstand being shot at by an american 76mm cannon. Let alone a massive howitzer sized HE shell.

4:17 Can we just take a moment to recognise and appreciate those men that were send in with fucking shovels to contain the nuclear disaster? They likely all developed radiation poisoning or cancer in later life. They literally gave their lives to save us from a potentially world-ending disaster. Those men are heroes by any standard and I feel that's not said enough. O7

Its always interesting how this series of cannons in this platform was so successful while the attempt to put this cannon in a full tank (KV-2) was a failure.

    • @imrekalman9044
      @imrekalman9044 Год назад

The turret ring has to absorb a lot of the recoil, hence the failure of the KV-2. The same reason the Pz III couldn't have the 7.5 cm, only the 5 cm gun.
