AwkwardHamster Hi again AwkwardHamster, just to let you know I just purchased and received a FI9828W, a FI8919W and FI9821W to add to my IP wireless security FI9831W camera; also purchased Blue Iris software but not had had chance to get that working yet. I now see what you mean in your video about the angle the FI9828W camera is mounted and also having to hide lengthy cables, I am surprised Foscam do not make additional mental spacer box so you can mount the camera on the box but hide the cables and connectors inside a die cast box with maybe a rubber seal to hermatically seal them together watertight. Your reveiw has got me started, we already have professional wired security CCTV panic and security alarms installed around our home due to 13 house garage and 4 separate vehicle break-ins and two separate shooting incidents, the additional Foscam wireless IP cameras will help cover outer buildings, our small gardens and areas not covered by the current CCTV systems. I think I am going to follow your idea of Cloud based storage so the video can be also stored and accessed off site especially as our unwanted visitors have even fried our first alarm after they came through an attic window 18 metres off the ground with no visible way they got up there unless they climbed a neighbours house roof first? Thanks again for the presentation, it has given us much food for thought on security camera coverage and capture of evidence so our relucant police can catch these criminals. The FI9831W camera did catch great video of someone watching our upstair bedroom windows at night whilst they sat in their car in the street at night, the IR off switch allows great pictures even through double glazed windows at night, lol. Thanks again for the pointers and ideas, best regards to you and the family too from all of us over here in the UK...
Great review...havent mounted it yet but will mount so cam is tilted...great point. I am placing on 3” pvc pipe and using 100’ power outside cable, I plan to bury in a conduit split tube...to protect from critters snacking. I like the longer cables and plan to keep them accessible, I have indoor and outdoor foscams and have had to access the cables, old lady at 68 and I don’t want to be messing around with the cables.
Hello! I bought a Foscam F19928P to monitor the weather in my city, but I need to place it on its head, that is, with the lens up to appreciate the clouds and the sky. My question is: Can the rain damage the camera by being in that position?
Very nice review. For cables, why not mount a dual gang electrical box. Add a blank cover with a waterproof gasket, and mount the camera to the blank cover. Put the cables in the box and they are out of the weather and out of sight.
+Thomas King its a good solution! almost to the power supply! But i agree with hamster the base would be a little bigger and the cables more short to fit into the base! Im installing a 9828P with micro sd.. another con.... you need to disassembly all the cam to insert the memory.....! Greets from Argentina!
Nicely done... have a couple questions... Do the IR LED's emit a visible red light? If so, how noticeable? I just want to use image emailing during motion detection. Video just takes too much bandwidth for my taste. How much control does it offer for snapshot frequency, email duration (i.e. will it keep emailing while motion is occurring, or stop after a fixed number of snapshots)? Thanks!
dinuguan510 At 4:14 of this video, I showed what the IR LED looks like in the dark. It's definitely noticeable. I don't think the images taken from motion detection comes out well. Most of it is blurry. If anything, I would use the video snapshots. Be prepared for a lot of false alarms.
I would check and see if a duplex box (like they use for outlets and light switches)would fit behind it then you could stuff the cords in it and they have knock out holes to stick wires though.
just got mine a couple of days ago and it seems that i can't find a way to put the camera in recording mode continously (not only when motion and sound detected), i mean i want the camera to record continously and also store all videos onto the 32GB micro-sd card i've installed also. And it says that it register sounds also but it doesn't. So, couple of questions: 1. How to setup it to continously record 24/7? 2. How to save all videos on the SD card? 3. How do i connect my laptop to the camera when i want to download all video saved on the SD card? (knowing the camera is mounted on a 10 meters (33 feet) high pillar) 4. How about if I mount a modem and a router on site right where the camera stands on the pillar to also have internet access and view the site online from time to time but the mobile network drops dead or the electricity drops dead and after reboot there will be a totally new IP address allocated to the camera by the router and modem, how would i find my camera online again in this case? Please if you can answer in order it would be very much appreciated. Sorry for my bad English too :P Thanks.
Good Review.....Is there a way to save video clips to my computer with the software provided? Or would I have to purchase separate software like Blue Iris. Also is the software the same with all Foscam ip cameras? Thanks.......
Jeffrey Cuthbertson Yes, there are many ways to save the clips, there are many software solutions available. Built in to the camera, you can save video to your computer if you use internet explorer. I only used this once, I think it was when I made a motion detection video. On my computer (Mac) I use IP Camera Viewer. It records but I have to click record. For surveillance, I have a Synology NAS. It's an expensive option. Or, you can save it to the cloud but these are paid services.
Thanks for the quick reply. Does it have auto detect I think that's what it's called!! I mean when it spots a person does it follow the person until they are gone out of range or does it just go through the motion that's set even if a person is in range
It is nice video,I was thinking buy this camera, but how many cable need to come out from inside the house?can you have a video to show how to install it please? Thanks.
Nang Vuong Because of the awkwardness of their cable, they can be outside if you use a conduit box but that requires more work, or they can all come inside the house. I don't think I'll make an install video because there is more then one way to hook it up.
All of them are bundled together. At the very least, you need the power cable if you added the wifi information to this camera. Rest are optional. But, as I mentioned in my video, I live in a very congested area and there are a lot of wireless interference. I would connect the network cable too. If you want to record audio, you can plug in an external mic.
I have been testing a 9828 with Blue Iris software. I have the camera set to 5 fps. At night the camera drops to about 1.7 fps probably due to longer exposure or noise reduction algorithm. My 9821s drop from 5 fps to 2.5 fps. Weird.
Hi there! Thanks for the great video. Just ordered the camera for my home. In preparation for the camera which is still due to arrive. I've just ran conduit for the cabling outside but only just noticed that their uk website suggests a recommended height of 6 meters. I'm just about 4 meters now and I'm wondering whether this is high enough. How high have you install yours? Do you think 4 meters is sufficient? I don't particularly need to view to the horizon and garden is flat. Thanks!!
MrYoohootuber If you don't need to look far into the distance, I think 4 meters is high. For me, I didn't need to mount it 6 meters because my home was already above street level. The driveway sloped down toward the street.
AwkwardHamster Wow thanks for the quick reply! That's good to know. I just received a depatch confirmation from them. Will finish the install tomorrow. Thanks!

The camera moves to must operate without them ? If it moves only when it controls ? Since you can not control the whole time she was supposed to be programmable
Hi, thanks for a great video! very helpful! i like to know if you know the dimension of the wall mounting base? can i used electrical outdoor box to put all the wires.
I am thinking about getting this camera. My plan was to mount it on the front of my garage. About 4 feet above my garage door there is a wood frame that runs the length of the front of my house. I plan to drill a hole through that and into the garage. Bring the pig tail through the hole. Then from there I'll go up into the garage ceiling as I have attic space in the garage as well. I'll wiere up a new outlet in the attic space as I have already have an in ceiling outlet in the area for the garaged door opener. Then the unit can be plugged in, in the attic and not even see it. If need be I can also get eathernet to that attic space easy enough so if I have issues with the wife I can go wired.
Great video, thank you! Could you please show me how to install it from outside, the power is inside the house 40 ft to the camera outside near the roof? Thank you!
Jan Nguyen Hi Jan. Screwing the camera is the easy part. But everyone has their own opinion on how to hide/manage the cables. The way I installed it won't be like what other people want. For example, you can either found it on the side of the house and drill a hole to have the camera cables be inside the home. Or, build/buy a cable manager so that the cables are managed outside.
I'm willing to buy this camera but thought it would be more clear at night. Seems to dark. But as you said it's worthwhile. I'm replacing 4 CFTV cameras for IP cameras. No more DVRs or NVR !
Hi, I liked your review of the FI9828W outdoor camera. I have the following 2 questions : 1/ Can I remotely control the camera setting (power on/off, IR on/off, and most importantly the horizontal rotation of the camera) with my I-phone and view the HD video live on my i-phone? 2/ Can I see correctly mid size animals (fox, dogs etc.) at a distance of 50 to 60 feet with the IR illumination only. Thanks very much in advance for answering Paul de Groot France
Paul de Groot You can remotely control it. If using a smartphone, the Foscam app offers only the popular settings. If you access it using a web browser, you have access to all the settings, even if you access it using Safari on the iPhone. I don't think nightvision will look that far. More like 20 feet.
I want to install that camera outside and I also want to record it. my car is on the other side and is about 30 meters from my camera. How is the sound. I want to record noise from my neighbors because they are suspected of destroying my car.
Hi great review seen this camera on amazon.co.uk the older version has poor enough reviews this seems to be better. How long is it on the market. No reviews on amazon. Regarding storage I take it there is no sd card option. I want to set up a system of 8+ ip cameras. Would I be better off purchasing a nvr to record or save to cloud. When recording to an nvr do I need constant Internet connection or does it just run through the network whether the Internet drops or not.
John O Connor This model came out a this year. There is no SD card slot on this unit. If your location has slow internet, storing to the could wouldn't be a viable option because the quality of the recordings would diminish. With the NVR, it is not relying on the internet rather your local intranet. I suggest making a checklist of what you are looking for. Then take that list and compare with the features of storing to a cloud vs NVR.
thanks for the great review. I like all the features and I am seriously considering one to replace my low resolution house front camera. I am concerned about the wiring and cable management. Did you attach a separate box next to your camera? I can get the power and ethernet wires to the camera but I really don't want all those connectors protruding and it doesn't look like they would fit inside the very small camera base. Would appreciate your solution or any advice. Thanks again for the review... this is making my decision much easier.
Private Netizen The outside of my property is stone, so I just left it exposed. If my home was non-brick/stone siding, I would have drilled a hole like you described. Alternative was to build a junction box. If I still lived at this home, that's what I would have done.
Thanks for the review, seems pretty solid foscam. Would be interesting if you could and compare to other brands like Hikvision, or even try them with Blue Iris to see how all work out with 3rd party software.
Did you try to access the cam over LTE ? I have sluggish issue with my FI9821W on LiveCam Pro and I am hesitate to buy another HD cam. I only got 0-4fps on my iPhone 6 when on LTE. Your thoughts are welcome.
Dannis F Yes, my speed over LTE AT&T LTE is fine. If it's sluggish, I suspect it's the connection between the camera and the router. Though it supports Wifi, I think having it connect using network cable was preferable because of outside interference. I live in a very congested area and can't get strong Wifi 5 feet outside my home. If you don't have a network cable that long, consider using a powerline.
Great review! Could you verify for me that if this is placed on the back of the house (center) about 14 feet up, that it would have a view of the slider door and window entry points located on that same wall? I obviously want the view around the small backyard but want to cover the entry points of the house. Thanks!
Stecaro Stecaro I spoke to Foscam about that earlier this year. I think it's more then 70 degrees. It didn't seem like they were planing to look into it.
Somebody complained about the field of view on foscam.us forum that is why I would like a measurement instead of a specification before purchase. For example , I measured my FI9831 at 75° close to the 80° specified. Could you please confirm the 70° by a measurement?
Here is the link of the topic complaining about the field of view: foscam.us/forum/fi9828w-not-70-angle-and-choppy-nightvision-t10626.html and here is the topic I opened to know if this was a single case or not: foscam.us/forum/fi9828w-field-of-view-t10696.html
Hello there great video:) How do you think this camera would hold up to Alberta winters I would put it under the soffit of my garage roof and no new don't live in igloos lol. There are two models of this camera the P and the W which would work better for my for what I need Wi-Fi is waif and run power no poe. I'm going to start changing out my indoor cameras which foscom ptz would you recommend ? Also I'm using ip camera viewer on my android phone but I would like to have online storage how is the foscam app for running multiple cameras? Sorry for all the questions thanks.
I would recommend the P only because I think they will phase out the W models. Quality are the same. There are many storage solutions so picking one will take some research. You can have Foscam store the recordings. Other companies store it. Or, buy your own network video recorder and manage it yourself. I purchased my own video recorder. There are a lot of brands to choose from so picking one will take research too. The app can handle multiple camera streams without issue. Issue might occur with your WiFi or internet connection if it can't handle the bandwidth.
The live viewing from Foscam app, is it limited to 30 minutes free live viewing? Does this apply to all Foscam wifi security camera? I'm about to purchase the Foscam FI9803P. You have mentioned to me in the past, about another Foscam camera, that other apps can be used for these cameras, like Live Cam app.
+Archie Huertas I guess if you sign up for one of the cloud service live viewing is limited. But if you connect directly to the camera you can view it for however you want. Live Cams Pro works with this unit.
Been following your videos for a while now and have purchased a couple of the indoor cameras after seeing your reviews. Been looking for an outdoor camera though. Curious how you actually wire up your outdoor camera's since, as you have shown in this video, this model has a long "pigtail". How do you run that through an outdoor wall and bring it in? Doesn't make sense with a wireless camera to have all those connectors on it. Personally I would rather have a bare wire power "pigtail" coming out of it an the rest of the camera being self contained. Much easier to run a power line to the other side of a wall than all the data cables and such. I've already done power lines for my outdoor lighting as it is. Thoughts?
Hi Jay. With this camera, I think the owner would have to get creative with mounting. This camera doesn't have any exposed wiring and needed a transformer. That meant this unit can be mounted anyway I want. The outside of my home is rock and I didn't want to drill any holes. I so just came up with a temporary solution. I used a 2x4 and propped up the 2x4. The wiring is a problem but it's manageable with a cable management tube. I basically did this just to review the camera. Before I received this camera, I hoped this will replace my motion sensor light. But this camera's wiring wasn't made for that. Also, even though it's wireless, I would still connect the ethernet cable. It's congested where I live. I get a lot of wireless interference the moment I step outside. Ethernet hookup is a necessary backup especially if I decided to permanently screw this into the building.
AwkwardHamster Thanks for the quick answer. Disappointing to say the least from what I'm wanting to do. Really like the indoor cameras. I was hoping to do the same, replace or extend a motion sensor light. Seems like a waste of money to purchase wireless for the data yet still have to run a PPPoE adaptor and split it or a seperate transformer that requires a standard plug.
I don't have surface close the the camera for IR to reflect back. Is your reflection coming from a particular object? I would divide the part you're viewing into 4 quadrants and start looking at if any object in each of them could be reflecting the IR lights so much that all you see is white.
AwkwardHamster No, the reflection is from the dome glass itself. What is your brightless and contrast setting. I have them at 5,4 but even if I change both to different numbers I still have the night images washed out. Yours is very good. What did you mean by "I don't have surface close the camera?". Did you have the dome covering LED and the LED will somehow bounced back and make your image blur. Here are the sample. Top pic is 10-15 feet and bottom pic is 50 feet. I have brightness and contrast at 5,4 and min. the LED reflection, otherwise the pic will look very washed out. www.dropbox.com/s/yl15rzhxrmoed6l/night%20vision1.jpg Can you provide some tips here?
Judging from the picture, it doesn't look like the IR LED is turned on. Can you turn the LED off then turn it back on again? Not auto, but on. All of my settings were left at default. Can't look at it now since I disassembled it.
what do we need for the two way audio just got off the phone with Foscam and they do not sell the necessary supplies which is dumb on the box it says two way audio
+Joshua Wescott Hi. microphone and speaker that uses composite cables. Or, a composite to 3.5mm adapter because I haven't seen microphones or speakers that uses composite cabling these days, could have been popular before my time. Whichever mic and speaker you use would have to be IPX67 or better rated and be able to withstand high temperatures.
AwkwardHamster I am disappointed in the hamster. :p (if you find out sometime plz let me know) It states in the specs that it supports 2 way audio but just not sure HOW exactly it functions in the soft: - Audio -- Input/Output External 3.5mm standard interface for two-way audio -- Compression PCM/G.726
Hi, your review is always very helpful. What i don't like on this camera that no built in mic or speaker you can't hear anything or talk back to someone as i did with my other foscam indoor model fi9831w . and second thing that no ration setting to make screen wider .please say something
+N JANAN Yea, that's a problem with these outdoor units. I personally believe they don't include a built in mic and speaker because it would significantly increase the price per unit if they were to add a weather resistant microphone and speaker. I didn't think the FI931W had a good mic nor speaker. I recently got the Foscam FI9900P. Haven't hooked it up yet to see if it has a good viewing angle.
+AwkwardHamster Thanks for your reply , I bought external microphone now sound is there but no sound if you replay your recorded video.I use NVR Client so far everything is working fine only one issue with sound .Have you ever tried external mic ?
hello hamster , ;-) I purchased the FI9826p 2 weeks ago and although it has taken me this time to get it going fully for all my needs. i love it. I just ordered this model FI9828W today. one question I have for you is i was looking at the LOG entries as i have it set up mostly as a webcam for friends , i would like to clear the log- out from time to time (housekeeping) it say's to do a camera reboot. does this clear all settings? or just log entries? all settings would be bad for me thanks in advance
also I purchased the 9dbi antenna for it.. i hope it will work with this model to help extend the range, you mentioned that it has a fixed antenna... will the 9dbi antenna work for this ? if not... whoops
Stephen Miner I don't know about the logs. I hardly pay attention to it because I don't have much people using mine. It's mainly because I don't like the way Foscam manages user accounts.
Stephen Miner I haven't tried switching out the antenna. The 9dbi antenna is huge. If the antenna improves your signal, or keep it consistent, let me know.
Hi man, very interesting videos, I have a question, I want to buy a camera for the outside of my house, I was thinking in the FI9821W V2, do you think will it work and survive in the outside a long time or do I have to buy an outdoor camera instead. FYI the temperature here in summer reaches easily more than 110° Farenheit in the outside , so that would be a problem for this cam ? what model do you recommend ? The "space" that I want to monitor is ~30 feet wide and 25 depth. TIA
In some cases that will work. When I tried to do this, I had a wired mesh screen outside the window. At night, that screen reflected the IR LED lights making the video all white.
Hey AwkwardHamster , thanks for this video . I'm looking for outdoor cameras for a system in a condo . Do you think this is the best outdoor camera of the market?? Regards
Great review, thanks a bunch. I've been looking for weeks in this price range and have settled on this camera based on your review. Question: Now that you (and others) have had this camera in service for a while, have you had any issues? If so, what should I expect? I'm concerned about winter temps here in New England so I guess I will just plan on keeping it angled in one direction and shut off any change in direction capabilities until the temp warms back up. I am also concerned whether there are any issues with condensation or fogging. Can you or others please comment? Comment; Based on this review, I think I will cut a mounting board at an angle (almost like a thick shingle) so I can mount it with a slight upward angle so I can capture the horizon when zooming so thanks for that info.
Hi. The unit functioned well. I ended up hard wiring the network connection because there are too much Wi-Fi interference by me even if the unit is just 50 feet from the router. I live in a populous area. I moved so the unit wasn't operational in February (coldest in NJ). Besides that, it worked fine in the other seasons. No fogging. No heat damage. Front of the to house faces east. I'm your case I would use it all year round because it's backed by their warranty. At least it's not as cold as ND.
To store surveillance videos I have sitehound set up to save only a certain amount of video to my google drive on my laptop that is at my house. The google drive syncs the videos to my google drive cloud.
It's the way your TV or monitor was built. If it was built for native 720 or 1080 resolution, then there would be no black bar. If it was built for native 960 resolution, then there would be no black bar. If you're using a TV that's 720 native to watch 960, there would be a black bar.
+Joshua Wescott The microphone, speaker or adapter? I haven't used microphones or speakers that can withstand the sun and weather storms. As for the adapter, I searched Amazon for "composite to 3.5mm adapter".
Short answer is yes. Longer answer is if you know how to read the web source page, you can parse only the stream so you can re-post it on your website.
+2fast65 Depends on your environment. In an environment without walls and no interference, 100 ft. But I live in a congested area with lots of wifi interference so I get 30 feet.
Has Foscam fixed or updated it's software so that there are no more hacks like the guy that spoke on the camera being used as a baby monitor? Great work on your channel.
Over the past year, I noticed Foscam has released a few software updates. This is a good thing because at least they're keeping it up to day. In one of the updates, the user has to change the userID and password at initial logon.
Arlo camera need more RD this camera seem to have many flaws. The should be able to allow for assigning static IP's. Instead try to dynamically trying to connect to the exist network a least have option for manual configuration. I did purchase it but does seem to work for me may I will wait until this product mature more before repurchasing it again...
Very very nice review. The only really helpful for the tech point of view. Yes the cable stuff is very annoying ... still thinking how to solve it properly. Foscam should have built a better option to manage the cables.... That for me is a NO NO NO!
I have one. Never again. The IR `s reflect back off the dome causing blurriness and worse. Worse been it looks like swarms of insects. Some so large it sets off the motion detector. This is in below zero weather and not insects folks. This is caused by cheap IR leds. Google it. The common fix is to turn off the internal IR and use a external illuminator. The trouble with this model is that if you turn off the IR in the cam you are also turning off the sensors ability to see IR making an external illuminator useless. I tried to get the dome off to mask the IRs but the the hood appears to be pressure fitted over the ring holding the dome. Pulled all the bolts and it still won`t budge. No help from Support on the issue and tough finding a support worker that speaks understandable english. Another minor bug is the antennae position is not adjustable. Straight up only which can effect your mounting options. You also need to get the cam up at least 14 feet to utilize it`s field of view. This is a camera for being up high looking down.
+John R. Johnston You got it all wrong. Your "swarms" are just tiny particles of dust illuminated by the super bright IR light. This is the same phenomena that superstitious people call "orbs". Same scientific principle. Look up an explanation for orbs. Super bright light and very close, invisibly tiny specks.
+Jorel S In English, it is acceptable to name a thing by its use. It's okay to say "vodka bottle" instead of "glass bottle". Same as ethernet cable instead of cat5 cable.
Looks like another cheaply made China product that probably wont survive too long in any harsh winter conditions. Does it have built in heater to regulate the internal temperature? Will the PTZ and zoom motor freeze in -30C? The cables danging out of the unit is simply ridiculous and that means one has to drill an EXTRA large hole on the mounting surface just to route the cables in. The antenna looks flimsy and poorly designed. IMO the only good camera from China is HIKVISION.
+AwkwardHamster Thanks for the feedback but how is NJ weather compared to Canada? Our temp range from -13F to 86. It might survive one winter but cameras like this are meant for long term install and that becomes a question mark.
+AwkwardHamster Well lets just hope this unit survives multiple winters and summer w/o failure. Foscam as a brand in general has pretty low reputation in the community but its good and cheap for a DIY project.
Thanks for the great presentation and explanation of the Foscam system, just purchased a indoor FI9831W to get started with tilt and turn.
cool, hope you like it
AwkwardHamster Hi again AwkwardHamster, just to let you know I just purchased and received a FI9828W, a FI8919W and FI9821W to add to my IP wireless security FI9831W camera; also purchased Blue Iris software but not had had chance to get that working yet.
Thank you for the kind words.
great review! foscam actually picked someone who knows what theyre talking about. thank you!
Jon John thanks for watching
Great review...havent mounted it yet but will mount so cam is tilted...great point. I am placing on 3” pvc pipe and using 100’ power outside cable, I plan to bury in a conduit split tube...to protect from critters snacking. I like the longer cables and plan to keep them accessible, I have indoor and outdoor foscams and have had to access the cables, old lady at 68 and I don’t want to be messing around with the cables.
Good job on the review. Your videos are above average quality! Thanks
Tom Bixler thank you Tom
hey your reviews and demos are great keep up the good work!
Thank you very much.
Great video. This is what all demos should be like.
***** thank you
Great review. It was really helpful in assisting me to make a determination.
thank you
awesome review very thorough and informative. Im going to purchase one on amazon today. thanks again
+David Amaral
Thank you.
+Thomas King
Thank you
+Thomas King its a good solution! almost to the power supply! But i agree with hamster the base would be a little bigger and the cables more short to fit into the base! Im installing a 9828P with micro sd.. another con.... you need to disassembly all the cam to insert the memory.....! Greets from Argentina!
Brilliant review, answered a lot of questions for me.
+Alex Yallop
Thanks
can you try make a video on how the 2WAY AUDIO works?
+James McGuire Yes. Dual gang is the term for the box. Add a weatherproof gasket and you are done..
Thx Hamster, i was wondering wich cam i must buy. This wil do the job !
just got mine a couple of days ago and it seems that i can't find a way to put the camera in recording mode continously (not only when motion and sound detected), i mean i want the camera to record continously and also store all videos onto the 32GB micro-sd card i've installed also. And it says that it register sounds also but it doesn't. So, couple of questions:
1. How to setup it to continously record 24/7?
2. How to save all videos on the SD card?
3. How do i connect my laptop to the camera when i want to download all video saved on the SD card? (knowing the camera is mounted on a 10 meters (33 feet) high pillar)
Sorry for my bad English too :P
Thanks.
John O Connor It can detect motion and begin recording. It doesn't lock on to a person and track the person.
AwkwardHamster
I thinks they have 6 cable,so how many cable do I need to be connect?can you tell what are they?
Thanks.
AwkwardHamster
Wow thanks for the quick reply! That's good to know. I just received a depatch confirmation from them. Will finish the install tomorrow. Thanks!
The camera moves to must operate without them ?
If it moves only when it controls ? Since you can not control the whole time she was supposed to be programmable
+Thomas Müller
I think you're asking about patrol. You can program preset positions for patrol.
Thank you so much! Your video was very helpful.
You’re welcome
Thanks Hammie great review!
+Anthony Brown
thanks
I'm willing to buy this camera but thought it would be more clear at night. Seems to dark. But as you said it's worthwhile. I'm replacing 4 CFTV cameras for IP cameras. No more DVRs or NVR !
+Marcel Felipe Machado Lopes Add an external IR illuminator. Very bright.
Hi,
I liked your review of the FI9828W outdoor camera.
I have the following 2 questions :
1/ Can I remotely control the camera setting (power on/off, IR on/off, and most importantly the horizontal rotation of the camera) with my I-phone and view the HD video live on my i-phone?
2/ Can I see correctly mid size animals (fox, dogs etc.) at a distance of 50 to 60 feet with the IR illumination only.
Thanks very much in advance for answering
Paul de Groot
France
Paul de Groot You can remotely control it. If using a smartphone, the Foscam app offers only the popular settings. If you access it using a web browser, you have access to all the settings, even if you access it using Safari on the iPhone. I don't think nightvision will look that far. More like 20 feet.
AwkwardHamster What is the official name of this app... there are several listed in the apple store. Also is it a paid app?
Official name is Foscam Viewer by Foscam Inc. It's free.
I prefer Live Cams Pro by Eggman Technology, cost $6.
If I still lived at this home, that's what I would have done.
good review... you hit it on head with all wires sticking out been trying to figure out what to do with them
Wil Smoke thank you
Thanks for this review, I am glad found your video :)
Ayaz Haniffa
Thank you.
the antenna can be unscrewed right? replace it with one that pivots.
Franken Stein yes
Thanks for the review, seems pretty solid foscam.
Would be interesting if you could and compare to other brands like Hikvision, or even try them with Blue Iris to see how all work out with 3rd party software.
I don't have plans on testing it with Blue Iris since I don't have a license.
Thanks!
It can cover the entry points but not much of the backyard as the field of view isn't wide enough.
+AwkwardHamster Thank you ...that is very helpful in my making my choice!
Great video !!!
Could you please just confirm the 70° field of view angle of the FI9828?
Thanks.
Can you link the forum discussion?
Here is the link of the topic complaining about the field of view:
foscam.us/forum/fi9828w-not-70-angle-and-choppy-nightvision-t10626.html
and here is the topic I opened to know if this was a single case or not:

Does this camera support PoE? I don't have a 110v outlet near the mounting point. Thanks for the great videos!
crosbyja79 I think I saw Foscam sell a PoE adapter. I haven't tried it or read up on it.
AwkwardHamster I just heard back from Foscam (finally)... the camera does NOT support PoE. Power cable it is... :(
Hello there great video:) How do you think this camera would hold up to Alberta winters I would put it under the soffit of my garage roof and no new don't live in igloos lol.
Awesome thanks for leading me in the right direction. What do you suggest for indoor foscam that you have reviewed
Foscam FI9831P, or Foscam C1
The live viewing from Foscam app, is it limited to 30 minutes free live viewing? Does this apply to all Foscam wifi security camera? I'm about to purchase the Foscam FI9803P. You have mentioned to me in the past, about another Foscam camera, that other apps can be used for these cameras, like Live Cam app.
+Archie Huertas How tall is the base on this thing?
+Archie Huertas
I guess if you sign up for one of the cloud service live viewing is limited. But if you connect directly to the camera you can view it for however you want. Live Cams Pro works with this unit.
do you have to use the cat 5 Ethernet cable or can you just hook up power and have it working thanks.
+2fast65
It can work with either. It has built in WiFi and an network adapter.
Thank you from Italy!
AwkwardHamster
Thanks for the quick answer.
How can you avoid IR reflections in FI9828? I have similar dome but at night I cannot see anything. But yours is very clear. Any tricks?
I don't have surface close the the camera for IR to reflect back. Is your reflection coming from a particular object? I would divide the part you're viewing into 4 quadrants and start looking at if any object in each of them could be reflecting the IR lights so much that all you see is white.
AwkwardHamster
No, the reflection is from the dome glass itself.
I have brightness and contrast at 5,4 and min. the LED reflection, otherwise the pic will look very washed out.
www.dropbox.com/s/yl15rzhxrmoed6l/night%20vision1.jpg
Can you provide some tips here?
Judging from the picture, it doesn't look like the IR LED is turned on. Can you turn the LED off then turn it back on again? Not auto, but on. All of my settings were left at default. Can't look at it now since I disassembled it.
what do we need for the two way audio just got off the phone with Foscam and they do not sell the necessary supplies which is dumb on the box it says two way audio
+Joshua Wescott
Hi. microphone and speaker that uses composite cables. Or, a composite to 3.5mm adapter because I haven't seen microphones or speakers that uses composite cabling these days, could have been popular before my time. Whichever mic and speaker you use would have to be IPX67 or better rated and be able to withstand high temperatures.
Hey,
Does this cam support ONVIF? The Box states ONVIF,but there is no mention of it on their website
I would presume so since it says so on the box.
does this camera come with 2 way audio support ? (I see the buttons in the software, do they work and is a mic or speaker included?)
***** Good question, I don't remember about the audio. I had to take if off so it's not hooked up right now.
AwkwardHamster
I am disappointed in the hamster.
+N JANAN
Yea, that's a problem with these outdoor units.
+N JANAN
I haven't tried using mic's outdoors. Mainly because I currently don't own a weather resistant mic.
If the camera can be operated by hand or it can also be for a program ?
+Thomas Müller
Hi. I'm not sure what you mean by operating it by hand. My hands use the app or web interface to control the camera.
Nice review. Decent cameras for the price.
Thanks for watching
I bought the model FI9828P.
But I can not understand where is the Slot MicroSD
can you help me?
thanks
JoeVuLong
Hi. I had the FI9828W and it didn't have a microSD card slot.
ok thank you!
Great review
hello hamster , ;-)
I purchased the FI9826p 2 weeks ago and although it has taken me this time to get it going fully for all my needs. i love it. I just ordered this model FI9828W today. one question I have for you is i was looking at the LOG entries as i have it set up mostly as a webcam for friends , i would like to clear the log- out from time to time (housekeeping) it say's to do a camera reboot. does this clear all settings? or just log entries? all settings would be bad for me
thanks in advance
also I purchased the 9dbi antenna for it.. i hope it will work with this model to help extend the range, you mentioned that it has a fixed antenna... will the 9dbi antenna work for this ? if not...
AwkwardHamster
will do.. i have also used KE6DOA on here to ask questions as well
Hi man, very interesting videos, I have a question, I want to buy a camera for the outside of my house, I was thinking in the FI9821W V2, do you think will it work and survive in the outside a long time or do I have to buy an outdoor camera instead. FYI the temperature here in summer reaches easily more than 110° Farenheit in the outside , so that would be a problem for this cam ? what model do you recommend ? The "space" that I want to monitor is ~30 feet wide and 25 depth. TIA
This is another model I was looking. FI9804W
I don't think the FI9821W will survive in that temperature outside. The FI9804W is at least designed for outdoor use.
AwkwardHamster what if I install the camera inside the house to see through the window ?
In some cases that will work. When I tried to do this, I had a wired mesh screen outside the window. At night, that screen reflected the IR LED lights making the video all white.
Hey AwkwardHamster , thanks for this video . I'm looking for outdoor cameras for a system in a condo . Do you think this is the best outdoor camera of the market?? Regards
Gustavo Llermaly I wouldn't say this is the best but it's an affordable outdoor unit that has a lot of the features I want.
Good review.
***** thanks
AwkwardHamster Excellent. Thanks very much for your info and quick response. I'll sync back when I install one.
Do you know of any good ptz that does near this price range
John O Connor This is the only ptz outdoor IP camera I reviewed. The other one I reviewed does not pan nor tilt.
To store surveillance videos I have sitehound set up to save only a certain amount of video to my google drive on my laptop that is at my house. The google drive syncs the videos to my google drive cloud.
coffeeis4closers I'm sorry, "Sighthound".
very nice video! Very usefull!
+Alejandro Martín
Thanks
Can u make 960p 16:9 instead of 4:3 ratio?
Laz R Yes, you can change that on your display but all you'll see are black bars to fill up the space.
AwkwardHamster can u make 960p wide like 720p without blackbar
It's the way your TV or monitor was built. If it was built for native 720 or 1080 resolution, then there would be no black bar. If it was built for native 960 resolution, then there would be no black bar. If you're using a TV that's 720 native to watch 960, there would be a black bar.
do you know where I can purchase it and what it's called
+Joshua Wescott
The microphone, speaker or adapter? I haven't used microphones or speakers that can withstand the sun and weather storms. As for the adapter, I searched Amazon for "composite to 3.5mm adapter".
Can this camera be used to broadcast video streaming.
+Raymond Ayala
Can you elaborate on what you mean by broadcast? I interpret broadcast as being able to view the video anywhere.
Yes I want to broadcast it on Social Media or my website. LIVE STREAMING maybe.
Short answer is yes.
Longer answer is if you know how to read the web source page, you can parse only the stream so you can re-post it on your website.
how far from the router will it work thanks.
+2fast65
Depends on your environment. In an environment without walls and no interference, 100 ft. But I live in a congested area with lots of wifi interference so I get 30 feet.
thank you very much and great video.
Thanks for the review. Good job.... sub'd :)
Michael Tsang thanks
Arlo camera need more RD this camera seem to have many flaws. The should be able to allow for assigning static IP's. Instead try to dynamically trying to connect to the exist network a least have option for manual configuration. I did purchase it but does seem to work for me may I will wait until this product mature more before repurchasing it again...
This positions it then moves on alone ?
+Thomas Müller
It will patrol on it's own.
+AwkwardHamster
You helped me a lot! Thank you ! :) Do you have a video by showing the function of preset positions?
+Thomas Müller
I do not have a video demonstrating the presets.
does anybody use this camera with NAS from Synology?
I use other Foscams with my Synology Surveillance Station
could buy a box, mount it on it. Service cables in there. problem solved
I don't understand if the camera is "wireless" why all the cabling?
+Steve Elder
They expect you to hide the cable in the wall or cavity. The cables provide additional options like audio, wired network, and reset.
+AwkwardHamster ...Ahhh..thank you...
+John R. Johnston
Thanks for sharing your experience
Thomas King thanks. I'll check it out.
thank you
you're welcome
why can't people say cat5, Ethernet is a protocol.
+Jorel S In English, it is acceptable to name a thing by its use. It's okay to say "vodka bottle" instead of "glass bottle". Same as ethernet cable instead of cat5 cable.
Yes too expensive
Looks like another cheaply made China product that probably wont survive too long in any harsh winter conditions. Does it have built in heater to regulate the internal temperature? Will the PTZ and zoom motor freeze in -30C? The cables danging out of the unit is simply ridiculous and that means one has to drill an EXTRA large hole on the mounting surface just to route the cables in. The antenna looks flimsy and poorly designed. IMO the only good camera from China is HIKVISION.
+traderjay
It does not have a built in heater. Motor hasn't froze.
I use this unit in NJ. We have cold winters and hot summers.
+AwkwardHamster Thanks for the feedback but how is NJ weather compared to Canada? Our temp range from -13F to 86. It might survive one winter but cameras like this are meant for long term install and that becomes a question mark.
It's only Feb but this weekend will be -4F. Temp in summer goes well above 90sF.
+AwkwardHamster Well lets just hope this unit survives multiple winters and summer w/o failure. Foscam as a brand in general has pretty low reputation in the community but its good and cheap for a DIY project.
That is true. I use their products because it's popular with 3rd party software.
