Hand pleating is so simple, I thought my friend who spent $200 for a mechanical pleater was nuts. You can just hand sew rows of even basting stitches, pull the fabric together to form the pleats, and make sure the basting threads are knotted on each side to keep the pleats in place. The basting thread are pulled out after the embroidering is done. So, $200 to run basting stitches that aren't even part of the final project boggles me. But I like the idea of finding a used pleater. It could be fun to have one, even though sewers have gone centuries without them. I can see the practicality for professional smockers.
