I like your intent to find a Speaker who will be a unifying force for the House. But can you think of anyone with both the political experience needed to run the House and corral members from both parties, while not being hated by one or both parties?

I wish Dems would work with a group of Reps to find an independent person outside of Congress for the job. Someone that will act like an arbitrator between both sides.

Nope. It’s their problem. Let them eat each other. Dems are always willing to put country over party (which it’s how it should be), but they get no credit for it, and Republicans go back to culture wars and scaring people with “us vs them” propaganda. No, voters need reminding what will happen once they control all branches of government. Republicans aren’t good at leading, but they are exquisite at opposition and running against Dems. WhT strikes me every time is that they fight for power but once they win they never have a game plan to rule.
The Senate and the house, including all committees, should be restructured to allow Dems and GOP to work together.
Summary-
The Congress is going to vote for their Speaker of the house. The recent mid-term elections have given the majority to the Republicans but it is not as huge as expected. The big Red wave they were expecting could not deliver much. Currently, the Republicans have 222 seats in the house while the Democrats have 212 seats. The number of seats required to get elected to the chair is 218. It is a tricky number as the Republican nominee Mr. Kevin McCarthy is not expected to get the required number. Out of the 222 seats the Republicans have, five members have voiced their opinions against him which gives him no leverage. Andy Biggs is against him, as are some other republicans who think he is very adamant and underperformed in the 2022 elections. One more thing is that the members can't vote for a person from their party. They will have to choose any other person, even if he is not in the house. Until someone gets the 218 votes, the house will go on continuing the cycle. If not, it will take a timeout to discuss other candidates or twist the arms of the distractors. The main issues for the Republicans are the Debt ceilings and funding of the Federal Government and it will be difficult for them to make the required changes.

But McCarthy won with 216 votes, but this video says he needed 218 votes.
By voting ‘present’ reps lowered the total number of votes winnable and thus also the number needed to get a majority. The people that had been voting ‘other’ switched to make the pool smaller so he’d win without them backing him.

I don't think the idea of changing house rules is a good one. I will make some changes concerning treatment of witnesses, members acting in bad faith, and categories for information that comes out of committees. I would be highly in favor to the role of speaker being held by none party members and compare it to the UK House of Commons Speakership.

You actually don’t have to be a member of Congress to be elected speaker, so we should elect me, and I will pass a law to make my own personal National holiday and then I will step down. Also I might pass term limits

i clicked here to try to understand the mechanics of the voting and I'm hearing about opinions and issues.. i just wanted to know how they count the winner and why it takes so many times to learn to count. really, if the people running the country can't count or lose count so easily that they have to vote numerous times to figure it out, I'm dubious as to how THEY got elected to THEIR seats. 😂
