- When you speak of great guitarists like Jimmy Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana, and B.B.King you can’t forget to mention Eddie Van Halen. Great guitarists have signature styles and Van Halen popularized the tapping guitar solo technique, which Van Halen displayed during his legendary guitar solos at live concerts. Additionally, Van Halen's instrumental solo “Eruption” is a must-hear for all rock and music fans, and it's considered one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. But besides his virtuoso guitar solos and undeniable natural talent what else is there to know about Eddie Van Halen? His life and career have been in the public spotlight for decades, but there are facts about Van Halen that his fans may not know about.

I am slightly autistic and don't generally like/listen to any music. When songs of my teens are played I listen, and Eddie was special - somewhere between emotional and admiration of his technical ability is what I appreciated. The only arena concert I've been too was New Haven for OU812. RIP EVH.
Eddie is not dead, he's jamming in heaven, always with a smile on his face.
He did have a smile on his face all the time

Eddies Dad was born in the Netherlands. Yes. But he was Dutch/Indonesian.
My in-laws were friends with the Van Halen family. They played often at Avio a Dutch club in Anaheim.
My Wife is the same mix Dutch/Indonesian. And Eddie loved Indonesian food. I’ve never met them but I’m so sad to hear he passed.
I’m a year younger and knew of Van Halen and enjoyed them for most of my life. I’d like to personally say also Alex is an outstanding drummer also. I hope he’s recognized more for it.
Eddie and Alex were also born in the Netherlands.
I remember reading years ago in a guitar rag that the only word Eddie knew was "yes" upon arriving here. I believe he was around 9yrs old.
OnTheFritz602 I’m sure that’s true. My Wife came here at 7. None of them spoke English. She learned English initially watching believe it or not The Beverly Hill Billies and Green Acres. Her Dad and Mom grew up in Indonesia. Left to go to the Netherlands then The US.
Her Mom is 88 and still prefers Dutch. I speak a little at least. I’m certain Eddie and Alex spoke in Dutch for privacy in certain circumstances. My Wife is still fluent.
@@OnTheFritz602 Sorry man but the only word that they knew was "Accident". I know that because I have a documentary on Van Halen.

@WheelsAlwaysTurning But Hendrix was not such a skilled Guitarist, he had his own style, that made him Unique. Even back then they were better Guitarists.
@@domi7007 I agree 100%. I never got the fascination with Hendrix. He's ok, but EVH compared to Hendrix... Com'on Man! Sorry but EVH is way better in every way, from playing to stage work etc. EVH had a 40 year long career, during which he was mostly adored worldwide.

I told her I was a man on a mission, asking her why can’t this be love. I felt like on top of the world, but she was no good. So I went home for Poundcake. And I know ya gotta finish what ya started. Let's not forget: Eddie did not invent the finger-tapping, but he greatly popularized it to a new generation of guitarists. But he remains a household name in the world of guitar and will live to do so. Thank you for all the fabulous music, Eddie.
True... Django Reinhardt, Steve Hackett to name a few who were tapping. What made tapping easier was modern high gain amps and pickups.
@@dbmxerinca yup.
@@dbmxerinca When Eddie introduced his highly developed "tapping" technique to the masses, modern high gain amps had yet to be created (and he said he never used distortion or OD pedals). As for pickups, Eddie chose to use his self-modified PAFs over the few hot pickups that existed at the time (i.e. Super Distortion or JB). Also, EVH didn't need any kind of amp or pickup to make tapping easier for himself, and this is obvious on "Spanish Fly."

A few thoughts… Eddie was one of the greatest guitarist of all time and his solo on eruption literally changed the way music was played and created a generation of guitarist who mimicked his style of play. Don’t take my word for it take John Kovach director of the Rochester Institute of music and a professor of music at RIT. He stated about eruption one minute and 40 seconds that changed music forever. Sure Eddie had his vices and problems like all of us but being a public figure he is were widely publicized battles with cocaine heroin and alcohol. He built his own guitars to create his own sound and holds three Patents; He created the Frankenstat A cross between a stratacaster and a Gibson and holds the patent for the peghead, One for a hands-free device that allowed playing guitar with no hands and one for a string instrument With adjustable string tension control all of which allowed the guitar to create sounds never heard before and changed music forever. I grew up on Van Halen and was in high school when they were released their self titled debut album. Their music not only followed me throughout my youth but influenced me heavily in a positive way and he is certainly an icon of the music industry and a guitarist. When he was inducted into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame in 2007 here’s peers ranked him number four on the top 100 guitarist of all time. I think that pretty much says it all and refute all of the petty negative comments written here. RIP Eddie you will be sorely missed and it takes me back to the passing of Tom Petty to legends of rock ‘n’ roll who were certainly jamming together in heaven now… How I would love to hear that jam session

I saw them live at wing Stadium in Kalamazoo Michigan in1980 and the place was electrified with their talent. I never forgot that concert after all these years. You never think you’re going to grow old someday and start losing all the people around you and now I find myself living more and more in the past so I don’t forget what I’ve lost...
I know what you mean when famous people you grew up with and have spent your whole life with pass away. It sorta feels like part of you died too and you can't relate to younger people anymore. You used to have to be extremely talented and very very good to become famous. That's not always the case anymore, probably less than more. Looks seem to make more of a influence than they did in the past. For that reason alone you probably won't get to see greatness like that again. Joe Bonamassa and Kenny Wayne Shepherd are 43 and will turn 44 this year. They are the last of the guitar heroes and even they aren't young anymore.
How old were you in 1980, about 18? So you would be about 58 now? Every year I can feel my body saying "I am going to die someday" and I reply "oh nooooo" bwa ha ha "life's a bitch...and then you die"

You got one thing wrong: EVH did not "devise" two-handed fretboard tapping, it was around long before EVH. Contemporary guitarists that predated EVH like Steve Lynch, Harvey Mandel, and Steve Hackett used this technique--just listen to Hackett's tapping on "The Musical Box" by Genesis. EVH just refined and popularized it for the rock genre.
