Wow... I must admit that I thought "that can't work" when I read the title. But you proved me very wrong and I am glad you did :D What a great version of this masterpiece! And absolutely true to the original. My hat's off to you, sir! Edit: Oh and by the way... I love how you fit your clothes for every song.
RIP Richard Joseph. Great music, as always... Amazing piano arrangement, kudos! One of the best C64 themes ever made! Very complicated and outstanding. Poledouris and Josep were genius!
This tune is stuck in my head from playing that game all those years ago. Sometimes I look up this song just to listen to it. I was pleasantly surprised to find such an excellent arrangement of this tune this time around :) Absolutely amazing.
Brilliant. You play many C64 games musics, you must be a nostalgic of these games. Among my favorites musics were the classic Giana siters, The Last ninja I (all 6 levels musics + all 6 loading levels musics are great), Lazy Jones, Aztec challenge, Forbidden Forest, Outrun I, Flip Flop. Others like Super Pipeline, Bombjack, Bubble Bobble, Commando, the Last ninja II. I hope to be able to play these one day myself.
This is amazing! I’ve listened to this video several times over the last week. I love it! I don’t know how you keep it all in your head. I can’t even remember how it all goes, let alone play it. I hope you know how awesome you are!
A long day of deadlines here. This randomly showed up in my feed. Excellent stuff, sir. A superb rendition of one of my favourite C64 tracks. Hats off.
And yes, it's complex. I used to play this game when I was a kid; as I got older I took several classes in music theory. Now I came back to this game -- I realize this is really complex music! The meter is crazy.
I was wondering if anybody would notice that! Nicely done. At the time my video editing skills were pretty much zero. I've fixed it now, but as you say, it's kind of interesting! So I'm leaving it as-is ....
What a great transcription to piano! Definitely gets the spirit of the original SID through. Minor gripes: the tempo is not consistent throughout the piece. Also, the left and right channels are swapped (lower octaves are usually mixed to the left, not to the right). But, as usual, your costume is spot on. 😊 Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the feedback! I've been trying to hold tempo steady in my videos but I still let the adrenaline get me sometimes. That's an interesting point about the channels. You can see both microphones in the video on the right edge. Upper mic is obviously closer to the bass strings and it is on the audience-right. So the channels are audience point of view. I was told recordings should be from audience point of view, but I'm certainly interested in other opinions!
@@RetroPianoGuy Well, I just had a quick scan through some professional piano albums I have, and it's a mix (pardon the pun). Some pan it all in the middle, with the ambient mics spreading the stereo spectrum, some have bass notes more on the left, some more on the right... Also, I just found this: www.audiomasterclass.com/newsletter/how-to-pan-an-acoustic-piano So... 🤷♂️?
Just watching this again, and what's with those marks near the base of the keys of the piano? Did someone with very long fingernails play this piano for years? 😀
It sounds like it's 60Hz and NTSC... the tune played slightly slower on PAL machines. Could I be right that Paul Nelsen is in the US ? BTW: Amazing playing!!
Thanks! Yep I'm in USA and played the game on NTSC, but I used PAL tempo for playing piano -- at least in the beginning! .... by the end I was going a little faster for sure...
What can I say? I’m an aggressive player and sometimes hit the fallboard inadvertently. But Good news! I finally got it repaired, so future videos will have that.
Anyone realises he plays this very very complex piece by heart and in one take! Of course, as a professional piano player is no big deal for him, I just wanted to make a mention. I can hardly follow the ryhthm...
Thanks, Big Boy! 🤣
Wohooo! “CONAN! WHAT IS BEST IN LIFE?”
To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
I love how this game theme was influence by Basil Poledouris' work.
Another important influence that's just as big is Bela Bartok's classical composition "Allegro Barbaro". You should check it out.
Epic. Bravo!
Amazing throwback to the Good Ole Days of video games!
Dónde ha estado toda mi vida este genio!?
Dude, this is awesome. This song is still stuck in my head from the 80s. I'm so glad I looked it up and found this.
This is one of the best fighting game in the history of videogames! have a tremendous music and gameplay!!! I Love barbarian forever!
Awesome 😎👍🎹🫶
Wow! A classical trained pianist would have a hard time playing this piece. All the different time signatures, and that bass line.
Amazing work!

Thanks. I didn’t think it would work either! But once started... it became a task to defy the odds. Looking at Commando next
@@RetroPianoGuy Oh my God, Commando will break the Internet... I am also waiting for Boulder Dash.... Absolute precision, elegance, and power!
@@RetroPianoGuy PLS Do Commando
I loved that theme, but I never had it in mind as such a complex song.
Müthiş, kağıda bakmadan bu kadar karışık melodiyi akılda tutmak, muhteşem icra.

SO.BEAUTIFUL.
The most authentic playing of Joseph's tune ever. THANK YOU!

My jaw dropped to the floor! I can't even begin to describe how awesome this is.
Excellent arrangement 😊
Richard joseph were proud....
THIS IS MY FAVORITE THEME because it inspired my gothic style of playing sooooo much, along with Orff, Polidouris, Wagner, etc.... CLASSIC!!!!
Almost flawless. Great job, sir, and thanks for bringing back memories of this incredible tune.

Would love to be able to pull this one off. Sooo awesome!
You absolutely nailed it! Hats off, Mr. Nelsen!
Oh man, what an incredibile performance!
Formidable ! Génial !
Awesome playing. Tricky rhythms all over the place... Played my eyes out over this one as a kid too!
If I had to choose between this and Poledouris' song....
Great performance, Paul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had goosebumps!!!!
OMG! What a sound, you really hit every one you play! Great, really amazing!
This was freakin amazing, every note spot on as I remember the theme, impressive only having the piano to cover this busy theme!!
C64 music actually works much better on a Grand Piano than with an orchestra! Well done! ❤
Definitely agree for this piece! Also for most of the others I have done :)
Wow!!! Remember playing this as a kid well intense! Little goblin coming along kicking the head lol. Great job propper brought back the feels .

Hello Again! Enjoying this AGAIN! in 2023! !! ! !1
Richard Gere plays Barbarian Theme very well ;-)
Nice work. You should have a go at the Mikie title screen music. I always thought that would make for a great piano arrangement. :)
Wow! That is all

when gaming was actually great!
