Thanks for sharing this. I’ve had a similar journey with stoicism and I’ve never talked about it with anyone - starting to think I should. One thing I’ve realised is that I always have a minute, and a minute is a real amount of time. The idea that I don’t have one single minute to just be, with no action, and no discussion, is pure ego. There is always a minute. Thanks Jazza. It’s always so nice to get a glimpse of you behind the canvas.

"The idea that I don't have one single minute to just be, with no action, and no discussion, is pure ego."
      It's not ego.
Ego is believing you don't want to waste a minute on things lesser than yourself or of lesser importance.
      "There is always a minute."
      No. There is not.
The future is not promised to anyone. Not even the next minute.
      Choose your minutes well....
And use them as if they were your only ones...
Because NO ONE is handing out more.
But if you need a minute for yourself, then *TAKE IT.*
      Use that minute on yourself.
After all, it is YOUR time you are spending.
      No one else's.

      I like their intention.
If minutes were bricks, what would you make with them?
A path to a better future?
A wall to block people or possibilities off?
Perhaps a pile, cast aside in waste?
You can build ANYTHING you want. Minute by minute. Brick by brick.
But they'll be permanently stuck where ever you choose to put them.

This hit me between the eyes! I have a chronic pain disorder that makes each day at work a trial at the best of times and excruciating at the worst. Stoicism puts a name to how I have been coping during the less intense days. Now I will have to adjust my mindset for those agonizing days as well.
Thank you so much for sharing this insight.

Do be careful. When you have chronic pain struggles (I do), you have to be very careful that what you're doing isn't actually disassociating. Disassociating is a coping mechanism but it's not a healthy one. I would recommend working meditative practices into your routine. I personally have to have it be productive meditation, so for me that looks like knitting and journaling. For others, that can be yoga or even laying in bed listening to a meditation exercise. The difference is that you're focusing your mind on a task while staying present in your body rather than focusing on a task while distancing yourself from your body, or worse... straight up going off into "lala land" as I call it where you lose time. If you've ever been watching a tv show and then suddenly found yourself watching another show without remembering the transition or find yourself driving from one place to another with no memory of how you got there or getting work done with no memory of it, that's disassociating.

I'm so sorry you have chronic pain. I have it too. Specifically caused by hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Chronic pain sucks so much. I have my good days but I also have my bad days or even bad moments. I'm not trying to say I understand what you're going through because I don't, chronic pain is different for everyone. Im not sure people who are healthy realize how much chronic pain fcks with our minds. Hearing other people even just say they have chronic pain, I know you understand a little bit of what it's like, and it helps me not feel so alone and closed off from the world.

I am so grateful for all of the genuine heartfelt lessons you share. It’s been a blessing to me over the years, friend.
As a joke for myself a couple years ago I made a street sign based on a Marcus Aurelius quote: “the impediment to action is the way for action what stands in the way becomes the way. The obstacle is the way.” It was a green street sign that just says “obstacle way” but it made me laugh. But it quickly went from being a stoicism joke for myself to a deeply spiritual unfolding of the most miraculous time I have ever known in my life. I shared the story in a talk to some school kids about it on my channel a while back. I call it “in search of inspiration”
I found limits to stoicism, but it was tremendously helpful in helping me get more grounded so I could confront a lot of the trauma I had held onto for too long. I feel whole now as though my spirit and body were in perfect alignment once more.
Be blessed, brother. Keep fighting the good fight!

Mormons have a book that isn’t related to the bible at all... everything you experienced was because the truth was left out. An example, Jesus made wine for people to drink, first miracle. He wouldn’t make anyone sin, it even says to drink it sometimes for healthy reasons (course don’t get drunk but you aren’t forsaken if it happens either). Mormons say a lot of laws and rules that were either Old Testament and only for the Jews before Jesus, or stuff that is against Jesus all together.
I’d say it’s good to get out of the that, but please don’t give up on Jesus Himself. He isn’t people. I’d recommend you to watch Joseph prince, Joel olsteen (especially if you need encouragement) and Andrew wommack (pretty sure that’s how it’s spelled). Also read the bible without that outside book, and focus on the New Testament since that’s what the Mormons ignore but it’s where we are

This was so cool of you to share. I know that feeling of finding something to identify with that pulls you forward and being excited to share about it (as an open and inspiring conversation)! I have always had a personality of "stoicism" in the sense that I can have a good time no matter where I go and no matter what's happening around me because as long as I'm here and you're here and we're having a good time, that's all that matters! But my mental health conditions had me operating in the complete opposite way: control everything that you can and lose your mind at everything you cannot. It was only in therapy that I was finally able to calm my body and mind down enough to think through things.
Because of trauma and especially with mood disregulation disorders, the human body gets trained over and over to immediately engage in fight/flight/freeze. That's why so many of us are like, "Okay I KNOW I'm not supposed to be upset BUT I'M STILL UPSET AND I CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT." Once we gain control of THAT whole process - whether it's calming the body down or just recognizing we're in distress and need a second - then we can put to use all of those things we know about being our best selves and living in the moment.
And as a side note I really loved watching this video, it was like hanging out with a friend over coffee just talking about life and the human experience and connecting over it. =D

My dad was displeased with how I didn’t know what to do in my life and it was kind of a lot of pressure I was constantly putting on myself. I also have grown up in the mormon church and still am. Currently I’ve worked very hard to earn the necessary money to pay for my mission in full.

I really like the Coin idea. Picking a coin you feel will suit the day, and if you fidget with things then it's a great way to have a refresher, a reminder of an idea you want to uphold the entire day. I like all of this.
I grew up with quite a temper, I'd twist controllers in half, snap keyboards, kick my skateboard in half, throw it, etc. ($2 keyboards from thrift stores were my life saver) Having made enough friends uncomfortable for so long I took a look at myself and realized I didn't want to be that person anymore. It took a lot of work training myself to stop in the moment and shake off my negativity, to exhale it. It eventually turned into where I just don't get mad at much anymore. Now I'm uncomfortable when others are mad around me, and my first thought is "why so mad? It's no big deal."
    I'm happy for you Jazza!

Q: How do you compare meditation with praying?
Context: For what you told about your upbringing and considering my own religious upbringing, I am curious how you experience the differences/similarities between the two. I feel like they both have the same effect of grounding, letting go and re-centering yourself/your values/your priorities. I wonder what you think about it. This is probably too deep/profound to ever give a (public) answer to, but I am thinking about it regularly.

I have several chronic illness and chronic pain. As a result of these disorder I have a more difficult life than most. I will sometimes have people ask how I handle it so well and am not upset all the time. It isn’t that things don’t upset me or that I don’t cry or get angry because suppressing those emotions to the point of being there would be detrimental. Instead it is more that I accept that there are things that I can’t change or that just “are” and try to live my life around those things. So, when I have to cancel plans due to hardships it is frustrating but I don’t find myself being super angry or crying. Rather I accept that outcome and plan accordingly. It wasn’t anyone’s fault and even if it was it wasn’t intentional so anger would not add anything but could harm a friendship. Sadness would only make the situation worse and allow me to further retreat inward. Instead I focus on what I need to get through whatever hardship I am going through and the hope that it will get better (but the knowledge that it may not and that is okay).

As someone living with a chronic illness, I have to say, this is the most robust description I've seen in a while for how we react to unexpected things that are out of our control.

Its been a long time sense ive watched one of your videos. I used to watch you regularly and i stopped when I stopped doing art(i am kind of getting back into art as well). Its been a long time sense i even clicked on one of your videos or got recommended your videos. I recently had conversations about life and how to navigate it with practically every person in my life. What this has lead me to is kind of my own understanding of stoicism but I didn’t know exactly what to call it. Now your video shows up out of nowhere right when i needed it and right when im starting my own path into stoicism. Thank you for this video! And i hope it helps many more not just me. Glad you found a framework that works for you and wish you the best.

I really enjoy when you do these occasional insights into your life that are about the person behind the art. I really appreciated a few years ago when you had a vlog about growing up Mormon and losing that faith framework. That was posted around when I was also deconverting from my childhood faith (Catholicism). This video has been a great addition to your journey.

I think this is the first time YT has recommended something from this channel even though I watch a lot of your main. And I'm really glad it did. I didn't realize there is an entire philosophy and history behind stoicism. I've only known it as an adjective to describe someone who doesn't share or express their emotions or generally just seems unaffected or a bit cold. I loved learning the positive context of it and felt it resonate with me in a way I didn't expect. I'm definitely going down a rabbit hole to explore stoicism more in depth, thanks for sharing 💜

I just want to say I'm really proud of the progression that you've made and I think it takes a lot of guts to talk about something on your channel that isn't your traditional content. I love Ryan Holiday and stoicism. So it makes me feel good that other people including yourself have come across it, are actually implementing it and are better for it! Stay amazing!

Discovering stoicism by accidentally being stoic is definitely an interesting way to discover it, I have been reading about it for a while, and despite the cultural and technological differences between our world today and Ancient Greece/Rome many of their insights (specially the stoics) are still very valid and valuable.

I cannot say this enough... I loved hearing this from you. It is very powerful to hear it from someone you respect. I have been a fan for over 6 years and your channel helped me get through a major health crisis and listening to the joy that doing something you love every day made me want to do it too. While I may not be artistic in the way you are, I'm pretty good at most forms of needlework and I always have a project (or 3!) going. I learned through my death(s) and subsequent resuscitation is something very close to what you talked about today but without having a name for it. Thank you for always being willing to share your journey through life with us! I, for one, love to hear about it.

    Fantastic video, 100%.
I was fortunate enough to have the concept of stoicism click for me years ago. The idea that I may not always get to choose what happens to me, but I always get to choose how I think about it and react to it, no exceptions... it's so simple and so powerful. You get to know yourself very quickly.
Of cause, putting it into practice *when it counts the most* is still tricky and I'm no master, but it's a strong foundation to build upon and I'm forever grateful for it.

I love the unexpected! This was terrific. 😁 as a long time student of philosophy and the path and letting go of stuff I can’t change I’m thrilled to hear more and more people speak about how their heart is recovering and recognizing what is important. We are one. Ooh the cold shower thing, hahaha…that keeps getting tossed in my path, I guess I better take heed before my higher self throws me in an icy lake. That which we resist persists, and your higher self will toss you into the deep end unless to do what it suggests. Truth.
