RIP Jimmy 🙏
RIP James Doohan. You were one of my favorites and you will be sorely missed.
Next to Shatner, Doohan was the most influential of the actors. Shatner gave the franchise legendary status. Don’t misunderstand Nimoy and the others helped, but Captain Kirk is as iconic as any American Naval Commander. Now getting back to Doohan, his portrayal of a Chief Engineer gave substance to the science aspect of Star Trek being sci-fi. Nobody believed the science in the 1960’s, but a good share of that “fictitious” science is a reality today. Even the yet unrealized science has some theoretical possibilities, e.g. faster than light travel. However what Dothan’s biggest contribution wasn’t his acting. James Doohan created an entire alien language… Klingon. The aliens in the Original Series only spoke English. By giving the Klingons a language in the movies and TNG, it made a more believable Mythos.
And today we have real Transparent Aluminum. Still $4k or so an oz, but its real. And the TAO's chair on a 1052 class DE is just like the NCC1701 bridge. BIG impact IMHO.
I love how Worf never says goodbye. They just look at each other and walk away. Definitely in character.
To Scotty, Worf's a Klingon, and the Klingons in his mind were considered the enemy just yesterday from his perspective. And Worf knows too well the feelings toward Klingons from humans of that era.
@@michael.barlow pretty sure the treaty was in place when he went missing
@@cmj0929 yepp. I think it's a Klingon thing not to randomly hug people or show affection (in Klingon culture that would be considered a weakness?)
As an Asian I sometimes have similar situations with Vietnam veterans.
@@cmj0929 He still grew up before that
So glad they had second thoughts on the original plans for this script. As I heard it, it was supposed to be a Scotty/Picard story, but they rightly reconsidered and made it a Scotty/Geordi story.
If that’s true then the scene in the holodeck is probably a remnant of that original concept
Glad that idea got nixed! As good as that holodeck scene was (the look on Scotty’s face as the door opens to reveal the iconic image of the bridge still gets me in the feels), and as brilliant as it was seeing Data say “It is green”, anything other than the two Chief Rngineers of the Enterprise accomplishing some impossible task together would’ve been wasted potential. I still wish they’d included a quick montage of Scotty and Geordi crawling all over Engineering together during Picard’s final log entry, though.
i think a scotty picard story would of made for a good episode later down the line. But yeah i like the idea of the scotty geordi story with picard acting as the man to bridge the gap.
I met James Doohan during a VIP cruise we conducted from Long Beach in the mid-eighties. He was a genuine guy and very friendly. On-board, he was hilarious, as submarines are very "technical" vessels and he was well-versed in the lingo. We had him call out on the "1 MC" (The general announcing circuit) "Prepare to dive", then, "Dive, Dive..... Do ya hear me now????"
Coming back up to periscope depth was even more entertaining as he gave the "Scotty" translation to everything we normally announce over the 1-MC.....
He was a treasure, and I cherish the moments I spent with him in the bowels of the engineering-space of a nuclear submarine......... He was in his glory......
The absolute best compliment ever. Scotty saying she's in good hands. Laforge kept her safe for many years and restored her back to her former glory at the museum.
In Extended Universe Canon, Scotty sets course back to Earth. He's surprisedly but happily received by Starfleet, given a full refresher course on all the technological advances made since his former retirement, and is reinstated as Captain of Engineering, given a command in the form of the USS Challenger, another Galaxy-class like the Enterprise-D, and the dedicated vessel for the Starfleet Corps of Engineers.
That's awesome!
Also on the enterprise E for her maiden voyage in ship of the line
Good
@@Mogget01he’s serving on the same ship with a returned Sisco too iirc
Wasn't Geordi eventually Captain of the Challenger?
I like to think Scott lent a hand in the restoration of the Enterprise D, just popping from time to time with a fresh bottle of saurian brandy.
You mean green gatorade.
One of the hands down best endings to an episode ever... RIP Scotty!!!
Aye.
. Y E S ! .
It was very rare to see the Enterprise do much more than fly like an airliner, so even something as simple as rolling on her side was a treat to see! Props to the helmsman for being proactive. She saved the ship without being ordered. 🖖😀
I was wondering when she would finally align it properly.
Maybe a little internal trust game played in both directions.
After all, we can assume that Starfleet officers have passed the shaped-blocks-in-holes test with flying colors. 😄
@@driftztwoseven6370 Let's see you roll a starship.
@DriftZ TwoSeven No, really. Watching this episode when it first aired was a thrill for the aforementioned reason. I couldn't care less who was flying the Enterprise for the scene, it was just an edge-of-the-seat thrill to watch back in those days. You take little stuff like that for granted now because of how far CGI has come, but that's kind of the point of this episode. You come to appreciate those little things from the old days. This stuff is the foundation for what is, and sure we have built on it (and then some) but at its core, it's all really still the same system, just with some new bells and whistles. :)
The reason why is because this was later TNG when they had a better budget and effects.
its because you really cant do any kinda fancy flying in space try to be like star wars and you'll be basically spinning out with no control
The ending here with Scotty’s words to Geordi about the ship only being as good as the engineer that takes care of her makes the end of Picard that much better with the Enterprise - D returning
'So You Soured the Milk' man hearing Scotty say that and the look on his face when he heard Geordi's story about the alien space baby from the season 4 episode 'Galaxy's Child' was classic and it still makes me laugh to this day.
Scotty was all ready for a drink in Ten Forward, but didn't know the crew was fixing to put him off the ship.
Loved this episode, it was wonderful to see an old friend again.
That it was. I still remember seeing that for the first time and realizing just who was materializing out of that transporter "hey! that's Scotty!!"
Scotty's reaction to Worf was priceless!
At least this Klingon would happily punch another Klingon who said his Enterprise should be hauled away as garbage!
I thought so too. but then I wondered. Was he reacting to him as a Klingon, or because he recognized his face from the barfight on K7 subconsciously? JUST enough to make him extra uneasy around Worf.
@@CentralNexusPrimeIm gonna guess the former. I mean the last time we'd really seen him, we'd just had Klingons murdering their own leader, with aid of Federation, so..yeah.
@@JnEricsonxor the Weyoun treatment...maybe you should talk to Worf again
Before he met Scotty was strictly by the book after he met Scotty he was certainly more willing to do things thinking outside the box or bending the rules
I think he was always willing to try unorthodox approaches to solve problems, but Scotty taught him a little something about risk management.
No. Geordi was like that long before this episode. Just Scotty showed him old bloody cowboy engineering, using a hammer and forcing the engines to the point of "I don't know how long she can take it, captain! 🤣"
@@misterlau5246 ‘Captain I’m giving her all she’s got!’
I loved it when Geordi quoted some technical specifications and Scotty answered "Forget it, I wrote the bloody thing!"
And that's called organic character development, which SJW-Trek lacks among other things.
Part of me imagines that Scotty met up with old man Bones and Spock for a reunion
Imagine later the Enterprise explores a new remote moon with some interesting radiation phenomena and on the surface they find Scotty and he's like: _"Did you know you can jerry-rig these shuttle engines for brief sprints of warp 9.7? The potential of this technology is amazing!"_
Nah, $20 says he immediately turned around and went back to the Sphere... He is an engineer, after all, and a Dyson Sphere would be an engineer's dream....
@@Blue84Stang I think the sphere was never to be heard of again.
And Scotty probably would want to work with people to establish some safety measures. I don't think he's over the trauma of what happened the first time.
Besides, money is obsolete in the Federation, so your point is not convincing. 😜
@@Dowlphin lol probably.... Doesn't want anyone else to get stuck on the interior....
It would be SUPER interesting if the federation decided it was worth trying to habitate the interior surface.....
@@Blue84Stang Alas, the star was truly too unstable for inhabitants. At best, they could try to study it to learn from the mistakes. But you'd think a civilization capable of constructing the sphere would have chosen a better star. The only real question that remains for me is... what did they do to the star? They couldn't have been so daft to build around something that's almost constantly blasting its surroundings with CMEs.
@@TemperedMedia why the assumption that it was built around a failing star? AFAIK, they didn't give an age on the dyson sphere, so it could have potentially existed for hundreds of thousands of years.
Right up there with the original, "Bone's " visiting the new ship at 137 years old!! Perhaps my favorite
line? " Ya didnae tell him how long it would actually take!?!?!" "How do you expect to get a reputation as a 'miracle worker'" ?😂😂
I love these little passing the torch moments.
It's a real shame how he and Spock never reunited on TNG, it would've been even more nostalgic
Except by the canon, Spock had long since been on Romulus?
I think Scotty would feel a lot less old after seeing the others showing their years
Do we know for sure that they never reunited?
@@Twister6424 Probably in some comic book or novel
@@CentralNexusPrime That's what I was thinking as well.
Words of wisdom from Scotty @ 2:46. The older I get, the more I understand it.
"Transporter Room, energize."
"I can't, sir. Their shields are still up."
Lol
While certainly not shown on screen, its entirely possible they knew the frequency of the shields. That is how they have beamed through shields officially at least in the past.
Gaps in an incomplete bubble too perhaps. Those shields were directed to keep the hatch open.
Several (as in many) scenes were cut out to fit the time allotted.
Good thing they confirmed they beamed over before firing those torpedos lol
it makes me tear up a bit after he tells geordi that the enterprise is in good hands. even after watching star trek picard where he literally rebuilt her.
How about some love for Ensign Sariel Rager for that 90º roll of the Enterprise D? Most helmsmen don't do a damn thing except engage warp engines. Rager was like, "I got this."
@DriftZ TwoSeven Name literally one other time in the entire ST universe where a non-cast member ensign makes a command decision without being ordered that saves the ship. My bet is that you don't know jack shit about Star Trek, but go on with yourself. I'll wait here.
@@ZakClaxton Hell yeah, she owned it in this scene! I bet she was smiling for days. On another note, don't feed the trolls. Report for hate speech and move on.
I know what you mean, its always nice when they show the background officers are just as competent as the main cast.
@@Josh_Fredman No need to report him, but as soon as he started in with "anti white", I knew what the real problem was. ;)
Troi's only dialogue in the whole episode is her saying goodbye to Scotty.
There was a deleted scene of Scotty talking to her.
The only issue I had with this whole episode is in this part at the end when they say starfleet has dispatched 2 science vessels to the Dyson Sphere and then that's all we ever hear about it. The technology that is required to build one of these is so far beyond even the borg you would think it would be one of the greatest discoveries of all time in the Federation, and yet Picard doesn't even seem to really care about it at all.
They're probably on their way to an assignment.
Want to be even more depressed about the ending? The shuttle they give Scotty has a maximum speed of warp 3. It'll be months before he'll arrive anywhere. Months inside a 1 room minivan ship without a proper bathroom.
@@koshi6505 no doubt he was regretting not staying and playing with the holodeck some more within a few days. at least stay on the ship until you're closer to a colony!
Federation rustics, so inept
@@koshi6505 this is SCOTTY we're talking about. I would not be surprised if he did his usual "magic" and jury-rig something to make that shuttle go as fast as a main cruiser!
One of my favorite episodes of the entire show. For obvious reasons, a very heartwarming story.
In a non-canon novel 'ship of the line' Scotty was part of the team of engineers that designed the Enterprise E.
Rest in Peace James Duhan
Doohan
0:38 I always loved the sound of the EntD as she picks up speed at impulse.
Another nice touch was having the helm of the week make the manoeuvre rather than data. Same for when she said she couldn't hold it, Picard accepted the info from his obviously experienced officer.
Yep yep yep loved that. She was great.
Geordi LaForge was one of my heroes, and was a creative, inventive and altogether incredible engineer in his own right. But, to get the Seal of Approval from Montgomery Scott himself...well, that puts Geordi on a whole much higher level than your other Starfleet officers.
the time Geordi and Scotty had here feels more impactful now that we know what Geordi was doing after TNG and during Picard, especially with how he was taking care of restoring the Enterprise-D.
Picard sure does have a lot of confidence in the transporter room. Didn't even check to see if they had them before firing. I'm still curious how they transported them through the shields
They have the frequency on the register?
@@Tony-ex2rm good point. It is a federation ship
The ship was probably so old that the shields didn’t matter.
maybe the shields created enough interference to split geordie and scotty into two. the ones that got left behind managed to jerry rig the transport buffers to keep them alive in the sphere. then years later they are discovered and are all bitter about being left behind and go join thomas riker in their misery.
I don't wanna make TNG sound old but did you know as of tomorrow, 16th Feb (Happy Birthday LeVar!) He's only 6 years younger than Jimmie Doohan was when he did this episode.
GEORDI: "You take care of yourself out there."
SCOTTY: "Aye."
Beautifully written by Ronald D. Moore and played by LeVar Burton & Jimmy Doohan, then the final musical sting, with Alexander Courage's original theme sounding, makes this ending among the best in the entire Star Trek franchise.
Perfect, I say, perfect.
One way for TOS to hand the reins over to TNG... shows class and respect.... IMO
That woman really knows how to pilot. 👍☘️💕🕊️
This was easily one of the BEST episodes. (Another one I turned to, a LOT.) He was a great actor, Rest in Peace, James. You're work will live on forever.
They should have given him a Danube Runabout. Tho a few reasons could have prevented that:
Prodiction reason:
DS9 Runabout sets were not available or not built fully yet.
Lore reason: Runabouts were being prototyped about now in universe and weren't Fleet ready yet.
Still would love to see Scott take a Runabout instead.
He doesn't need it, it is Scotty. He will upgrade that crap shuttle to have quantum torpedos and warp 9 with random junk.
Runabouts are not shuttles. These are real ships, registered. I don't think they could give one.
"Every woman has her own charm, you just have to know where to look for it."
- Montgomery "Scotty" Scott
Sometimes, you gotta dig reeeeeeaaaaally deep 😅
1:33 Sending LaForge to his death to save the ship - Deana really struggled with that part of command training.
@2:45 those words hit deep
did anyone else want to see more the dyson sphere. Like maybe beam down to the interior surface to check it out...
One rather large mistake here: Captain Picard orders Scotty and La Forge beamed aboard, THEN orders torpedoes fired. But the _Jenolen's_ shields were still up, and you can't beam through shields. So how did that work?
Twenty-fourth century transporters can beam through 23rd century shields. That must be it, otherwise that part makes no sense.
Realistically the Enterprise would have been the ideal ship to stay and study the Dyson sphere.
Geordy and scotty like a good friend but very short meet. That is a last time we seen 2 legendary star ship masterpiece crew work together. And sadly end with captain kirk
Love how the helmswoman hit 4 buttons to get out! Great driving!
Scotty for sure recognised worf from the bar fight on k7 😂
Those are Klingons?!
Retroactively! Or he could be like, "He looks like his grandfather!" As Dorn did play Worf's grandad also!
Gotta love these "passing the torch" episodes.
The best episode to me. Glad to have seen Scottie back. If we live long enough we will see a Star Trek future for real. Everyone has there part to play now and then. LLAP 🤟
Could have waited a tad longer there, Captain! Lucky you got the personnel back AND got the Enterprise out.
"Transporter room to bridge, I'm having some trouble establishing a lock....."
Captain I can’t transport the Shields are still up!!
That 90 degree roll was so slick.
Guess that whole not able to use teleportation while shields are up didn't matter here?
Shield design probably changed a whole lot over 75 years so wouldn't be surprising that newer transporters could work through old shields. Shield tech would be one thing that definitely would have changed a whole lot over 75 years because would have to keep up with advances in weapons as well.
I thought this as well when I first watched this episode, but I concluded that LaForge must have (offscreen) sent the Enterprise the shield frequency of the Jenolan. This would allow them to send a transporter beam right through the shields, and would allow a photon to pass right through them. We know what happened to the Enterprise-D when the Duras sisters learned its shield frequency in Star Trek: Generations.
Ron Moore admitted that was an oversight on his part, when he was working on the script.
Be that as it may, I still offer a perfectly valid, if not the most valid in-universe explanation. It's not a stretch at all, like other in-universe explanations.
Thrice did members of the TOS cast appear to pass the proverbial torch, and each time it was a great episode.
That shuttle prop is REALLY nice.
1:54 Ensign Rager is a ice cold pilot.
Better send off than that guy who lied about being from the future. Goes to show, I guess, respecting others brings you a long way.
Rest in Peace Sir.
In that shuffle, how do you take a dump without disturbing anyone else? Where is the toilet?
They poop on a dinner plate and put it into the replicator. Then they say "Computer, recycle"
1:56 - aaaaaand there went our entire budget for that whole season xD
Random extra girl flies the Enterprise out like she was Tom Paris.
It's very interesting when Geordi and Scotty walk around to the back of the shuttle - briefly, at @4:05, there seems to be half a Visitors symbol from "V" applied to the side. Of course, it wouldn't be the only prop inherited from "V" (every time they have those goldish hexagonal containers in cargo bays...those all showed up on the Visitor Mothership first), but it always kind of makes me smile/giggle to see them. Perhaps, without the Enterprise's knowledge, that particular shuttle is programmed to head directly to the Visitor homeward. Scotty meets Diana...now *there's* a crossover event... :)
I thought you were going to buy me a drink at 10 forward? I got a better idea, give you a shuttle and kick you out lmao.
After all those years, I still think the ending was a bit lame. It never sat well with me. At least drop him off at the next star base or better still, Risa pleasure planet.
And , as an extra surprise , the replicator only serves beans
lmao
@@thomasfletcher760Synthehol* (that would be way worse than beans)! 🥴

I like how they deliberately block the name of the shuttle to tease fans
4:01 I think the name is partially visible over Worf's shoulder: _Goddard_
They really should have done a follow episode for the Dyson sphere
Sadly with the passing of James Doohan, we never know what happened to Scotty during the time of Picard. There is at least the possibility that that he was still alive during the events of Picard and the same would have been true for Spok had Leonard Nimoy not had died. So many what ifs left unanswered.
"The enterprise is in good hands" yes she is scotty. Yes she is.
That ensign at the helm. Cool as a cucumber with that roll manoeuvre.
Love how nobody says "nice piloting" to that red shirt
Freaking beautiful
In the novel for this episode, Picard orders Ensign Rager to roll the ship 90 degrees, but I love how in the episode she does it on her own.
LeVar Burton is now the same age James Doohan was in Star Trek IV...wow
Great episode, and when I bought the novel "Dyson Sphere" I was excited to read it. Unfortunately, it was somewhat lacking.
Scotty put his word very correct. Proof it was Geordi revive The Lady to save entire Federation 30yrs later...
2:05 "There now, that wasn't so bad was it?" ... Boimler: unconscious.
I don't care, this is the best TNG Episode, I declare it so.
Great writing great crossover.
Love how she fly that starship.
Aah. So nostalgic. Wonderful.
This episode was another hand-off episode for the Next Gen crew. A signal to those of us watching that the Original Series crew approved of the new series and felt it was good.
It was joyous seeking Scotty in action again. In a way, it was a continuation of the handoff that McCoy did in Farpoint. It would be cool to think that they could have met up again - and with Spock, of course.
This and Darmok are my favorite episodes. So wonderful to see him again.
All though it is inhabitable on the inside. It would be an incredible source of power. Once tapped into, from the outside.
I love this episode it’s pretty much perfect from start to finish. One thing that gets me however and it’s more about lore and cannon is, you never hear of the Dyson Spheres again it’s bonkers.
And the shuttle instantly blows up.
Scotty: I thought you were going to buy me a drink in Ten Forward.
Geordi: Nah, I think we'll kick you off the ship now...

I Love at 4:00 how he looked at the Klingon without shaking hands or even speaking to him 😂
They could've just let the ship hold out as long as it could and change their course slightly so that they flew into the spacious area to either side of it, but what would the fun in that be?
