Kalpana won the National Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film 'Thanichalla Njan' in 2012. She was one of the finest actresses in Indian Cinema.

Kalpana was very human sociable and had amind for those who are suffering and abvall was down to earth Would like to mention one of the incidents it was in the late eighties when liternational film fest was being held in tvpm city .At that time she was staying in a hotel in tvpm for shooting purpose A cleaning boywho came to clean her room used to caste a peculiar look at her whenever he went back . When he repeatedly doing this Kalpana complained other staff who came to her room about this behaviour of that cboy. They told her the reason for that . He wanted to attend the international film fest held in tvpm city .He reqested the persons associated with mal film field who were staying there B ut everybody refused his request for he being a silly boy and they thought how could he understand the class films But Kalpana brought him to her room aand asked hil whether he liked to attend festival . He replied yes At that time it was very difficult to get a pass unless u re a member of a film society. But Kalpana telephoned many persons because at that time there was no mobile phone. However she managed to collect apass and handed it over to that cleaning boy
