FAQ
-The boards are standard pine 1x12x10 & 1x6x10 from Lowes or Home Depot
-All the instruction Ralph had is in this video.
-The hand held board break at the beginning is tougher and requires the ability to deliver a lot more power. A little bit of quality instruction will get you there though.
-Everything shown here is beginner level in our system.

Awesome points. I knew the slap was effective and have used it a bunch. But no until this vid did i realize its full potential. I literally went outside and broke atleast 12 boards, one after another, from sheer skepticism, bewilderment, realization and excitment ay what i just learned. Thank you
"So, officer, do you already know how he died?"
"Yes. We found evidence about an hour ago."
"So, what did you find out?"
"Well, we are not completly sure yet but he probably got
*Bitchslapped to death."*
+Nazimelon LOL.
Lol
+Nazimelon ,,,,, wet ! !
+Nazimelonhamster lol
hahah what a gorgeous comment.
Atleast he's taken a break from foot loose
I thought Kevin Bacon too!
BlueWaveDragon Me too!!! Lol
Kevin Bacon is now teaching street fighting?
jejeje you're right. Kevin is a lot like him.
***** You should see him in Death Sentence a 2007 movie.
dethchief13 Oh yeah. You didn't that the six degrees of separation are actually a reference to Master Bacon being a sixth degree black belt?
Well technically EVERY knockout is a one touch knockout. Just ask anyone hit by Mike Tyson.
My Bf Darrin Sandusky is one of his former students. Darrin talks about you & the school all the time Richard. I was trained in Tae Kwon Do here in Gatlinburg by Laurence Evans. I hope to some day come by and watch a class.
1:35 I'm dying. His reaction is priceless
Bas Rutten does advocate open palm strikes in multi attacker brawl for the same reason, that it is easy to break your hand. He often would strike behind the ear, and low for a knockout.
Yes, we use a lot different drills to control and get rid on tension while under stress.
Having done Karate and latterly learnt Wing Chun I find that the palm strike is much more effective than a punch especially when training on the wall bag. I know what I would use in a self defence situation. Good video guys.
This is true, Wing-chun also usse the same same quick technique for our punches as well, I just joined my first wing-chun class yesterday and was able to break a board using the one-inch punch which uses the same technique as this.
We've taught these techniques all over the country. Dozens of the folks we taught have had to use them to protect themselves. They've all reported great success.
...but feel free to come visit and see for yourself.
Fantastic ! very Impressive ! Love that- Tai Chi resembles Aikido
With a punch you have to keep a very specific structure or you break your wrist. To do this and stay relaxed requires training and practice. With the open hand we can teach someone to do this in 5 - 10 minutes. Of course you train up to have powerful punches too but if you train the open hand as well it will always stay ahead of the fist in-terms of raw power. Ideally you train both and use whichever is most appropriate at any given moment.
#2 pine but don't take our word for it. Please stop by any time or come to one of the many events we'll be at around the country. We are more that happy to let you inspect the boards and demonstrate live.
idk why but when i do open hand strikes my explosive power and speed drops to like half, only when i do a knifehand chop does it stay close to closed fist speed
Good teaching skills - an art in itself.
Thank you, Darren!
I like your composure. Good stuff.
"Hit the board like its on fire"
Thats the best metaphor of energy transfer I've ever heard... Nice!
What's the name of Silat is this? May I know?
I studied under sifu clear over 20 years ago when he had his studio in Tampa. he's the real deal. awesome teacher.
Thanks for watching, Mike!
+Clear's Internal Combat Arts thank you for making your classes available here. I miss the Tampa school an the vibe we had then. I hope to see sifu soon.
Jason Jason you obviously don't have a clue. You wouldn't last 10 seconds in front of Richard Clear. He'd not even break a sweat ripping you apart.
He was a 12 year old kid who was trolling so I banned him.
Clear's Internal Combat Arts I figured as much, next time I'm in Tennessee I'm coming to see you sir. I sure wish you had your studio here in Tampa still. Your surely missed here.
I saw his videos before and he is very good
Depends on how he's throwing those punches. Either way the key is in using your foot work to control the distance while you destroy anything within reach.
@bmckenzie69 Of course you can break a board with a fist also but it requires a little more training. And if you run your fist into an elbow or the hard part of someones head you can easily break it while the open hand will usually not suffer any damage. We find the fist is also a useful tool for certain things but we tend to use the open hand about 70 - 80% of the time.
the way u are moving do u know wing chun cuz the movment are very alike
@x1Wardy Elbows are an excellent tool and we use them a lot but they don't have the reach that the open hand does. And this video is about the open hand not elbows. We train to strike with the open hand, elbows, knees, feet, forearms, all parts of the fist, shins, the head, shoulders, hips, fingers and more.
Direct and effective. Great stuff!
Do you have any locations in georgia
how many hands does he have in this scenario of yours?
the wopd theyre using is Pine
It's your standard 1 inch pine from Lowes or Home Depot. There's more info on that in the description.
Yes, but there are many other factors. The smaller surface area of a punch makes it much easier to slide or skid on the target. This drastically reduces the amount of impact. Also because of the relaxation in a slap folks learn to transfer whole body weight through the open hand much faster. And it's much easier to get that force to penetrate and cause a concussion with the open hand than with a fist.
Where are you fellers located
I see what your saying but our head would not just slit in half it would cause internal and external damage and pain. But i dont see how it works either,im still confused
what kind of wood is that?
I think the best way is hit hard parts of the body with the palm , and hit soft parts with the fist.
What's show in the video doesn't require any Iron Palm or hand conditioning.
Of course we do train that as well (mostly internal Tai Chi type stuff) and it adds even more power to the strikes.
All it takes is a little practice. They key is to get as much of your body weight into the strike as possible. The more relaxed you are the easier this is and the more power you can deliver. So the best strikes look effortless.
Does most of their training involves multiple opponents armed with weapons?
can anyone do this??..or does it take years to master it??
What is said in this video is absolutely true. I have done kick boxing for several years and the power from a open hand can deliver a much more damaging strike. Also as you get older you need to find ways of defending your self that are easier on the body.
Come to London, I work in Piccadilly Circus, show me your technics
Where waiting on you thegerms1010. When are you going to come visit?
Both can be useful. The key is to pick the right tool for the job.
True, but you can still break your wrist or sprain it even if it's tense. Say you go to hit someone in the chin and then they quickly lift their chin and your upper hand hits but then you wind up hyper extending it. I think that the boxing punch is actually more effective than both of these methods because the stance is equally as defense full as it is offense full. The strike is a fist, but they flick their hand downward to quickly retract back to normal stance. It's a very relaxed, loose style
@sillylocs420 Thank you. You'll find that some (though not all) silat styles have some similarity with Muay Thai since Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia are fairly close together.
I can't put links in the comments so search on google video for "Clear's Silat Demo"
At 0:52 Sigung Clear sets two boards on cinder blocks. Stands on them. Then picks them up and breaks them in one hand while holding them with the other.
Also check out our video "Internal Iron Palm in 100 Days"
About 20 seconds in you can see a student doing a similar break.
And we do these live all the time so you can simply visit or catch us at a workshop.
So palm slaps , is it better to hit with the lower part if your palm or the top? And after your palm lands does the rest of your hand land also or is this when you pull away? Also, do you guys need to build up the resistance of your hands to break the board,if so how? And one last question, I have some muscle mass and am wondering how this will affect it, I think so long as I keep my strikes lazy until the end I should be good right? Or do I flex my muscles from the beginning for concentrated palm strikes
Best to use the entire hand including the fingers. You can either follow through the target or bounce off the target. Either can be correct depending on the situation. You don't need any hand conditioning. This is simply using proper body mechanics and a little relaxation. The more relaxed you are throughout the entire movement the heavier and more powerful your strikes will be. One common mistake is to tense the hand at the point of impact. Keep the hand open so the entire palm hits, stay relaxed the entire time. On impact let the hand and arm relax even more for more power.
I see, it is like tension would not let the force pour through your attack, very concise response. Thank you for your time man it won't go to waste.
oh man, this is the most complete martial art!
Come to California. Lol. Please. I need your class.
Love your videos. thanks for posting!
Hello, I am from Germany and practising Kung Fu...
yes, what you tell in this video is really true. Some month ago I invented a similar technique to yours. And the PLUS of power is really amazing. Now the punch of me is three times harder than before. :)
Dude you look just like Kevin Bacon! Awesome techniques!!
this kinda looks like the cqc that big boss uses in MGS5 but i'm not very familiar with marital arts so idk
Most people try to hard. They tense their hand or arm and that takes away all the power. Relaxation is an essential part of getting power into the strike. Part of the reason these strike look so odd on film is that for the most power you have to relax and use as little effort as possible. Live it's easy to just let folks feel it (safely and carefully.) On video though, it looks odd if you haven't seen this kind of thing before.
On my black belt test I did that and everyone was amazed
So nice... Looking or Watching The this one of many, I'm impressed....
+keti botkoveli Thanks for watching!
@bubbybaker -- If you would like to see / feel some quality Kung Fu, Kun Tao or Silat first hand you are welcome to stop by anytime.
Great technique. But would like to challenge the punch with the Palm strike.
How many boards can you brake with the Palm strike ? I can punch through about 4 to 8 boards with the front porch.
Very interested in you Reply. Michael Mannino.
I regularly break 1.5" - 2" concrete patio blocks with palm hits, and can break multiple boards including selecting which boards. The fist can be trained up to be a powerful tool in your arsenal with long term training, but most people can be taught how to generate Knockout quality power with an open hand in minutes, no conditioning required.
the damage spreads along the palm in a slap while the punch is concentrated onto one area / fight science , watch it
It would be good and very helpful if instructors would teach on how to read a would-be attacker's intent, that is how to tell if he is about to strike or sucker punch, thereby helping the student to be more prepared
There is extensive training on that in our system. We'd love to see you in class if you can make it!
The whole point of this type of striking is that it is effortless and does not require any setup or loading.
Silat has been specializing in elbows and knees hundreds of years before Krav Maga was ever conceived of and because of it's proximity to Thailand, Silat also has hundreds of years of experience working with and against Thai Boxers who also have excellent elbow and knee training.
...but don't take my word for it. Come visit any time...
Beginners should use the whole hand. With a little practice students can use just the fingers. With more practice just the finger tips are used.
Getting your bodyweight into the strike is the key.
Yeah, we got those boards from Lowes not Home Depot
Anytime we have time. I love to spar against different styles n see how unique they are
Anytime is a little to vague. How about a Thursday at 7:30pm?
@bmckenzie69 If your hand is tense it is easy to injure the fingers as you describe. However, if you keep the hand relaxed so it will conform to the shape of whatever you hit the strike will be more powerful and the risk of injuring the fingers is very small. We use punches but that there are a lot of benefits to the Open Hand and beginners can learn to transmit real power with Open Hands a lot faster than they can with punches.
but you also need to think about distance and time
And that was very eye opening demonstration..., martial artists spend decades to train the knuckles, yet, the power of open palm is right there..., thank you for posting... Wish I had an instructor like him when I was young...
That was very interesting.
What is ridiculous specifically?
I want to see a montage of the touch it and get away guy.
Got a jar you can't open? *smashes jar to smithereens*
Someone looks at you funny? *decapitation*
Can't pick up Thor's hammer? *touch it and get away*
You're welcome to come visit anytime.
that is really impressive
btw I am doing martial arts myself (bujankan ninpo taijutso)... white belt by now but I dont care about it because it helps me to find my inner balance
Pay attention this time, relaxation is key. When a woman slaps you hard she's putting as much force as she can in that hand; to truly cause damage you have to relax your hand and let momentum take it,acting similar to a whip.
Actually most of the breaks in the video are palm breaks so the fingers are irrelevant and while there are some types of finger strikes that require conditioning there are several types of finger strikes that do not.
@nemicaproductions Any one can do a basic 1 Hit KO with 5 - 10 min of instruction. You just saw Ralph Miranda learn it in about 5 min and his board break was much closer to a 1 Touch quality. A basic 1 Touch KO can be taught in a weekend intensive. There are also more advanced 1 Touch KO's (less effort w/ more power) that take years to master.
Breaking someone's arm is actually quite difficult... it take's a fair amount of force, and when the person realises their arm is about to be broken they tend to start to struggle a lot.
frontal labotomy I have used this in a real situation and broke a guys arm without even trying. It just happened as part of the process.
Also, if you are trying to break an arm and it is obvious that you are trying to do it, then, the most natural response they will have is to protect their arm and it will be quite difficult to break (if not impossible) under those circumstances.
frontal labotomy I do bjj for around 5 years...if you do the right technique, its pretty simple to do it, and ofcourse it depends on a flexibillity of your opponent.
The way he did it in the video, its close to impossible to pop someone's arm because all of the force would spread from elbow to shoulder, since he didn't isolate it.
throw them down make sure the arm is up in a tilted position and stamp on it
Max College I guess... you could do that.
+frontal labotomy
Technically speaking...
Muscle tension spreads out most of the force of blows.
If you hit something, even a bone, with a good deal of force.
If they DON'T have their muscles tensed in anticipation.
Chances are you can break whatever you just hit.
Bones, particularly ones in the ribs or joints, are actually pretty flimsy.
@espo812 You just missed us. We were in Albany a couple weeks ago at the Tai Chi Gala. However we are putting together a series of free and low cost workshops for 2012. So visit our Clear's Tai Chi website and keep an eye out of those.
Awesome....I wish you had a school in Sydney Australia.
@kuntaosilat your doors are always open because you keep breaking them, when you push'em open!
Kevin bacon teaches self defence?
Dude, I've seen a thai boxer take down a baby palm tree with only kicks, probably hurt like hell because his leg was all scratched up and swollen but he definitely took it down.
I like the video im a little skeptic about it would be awesome to go to a class or something
nosley25 I broke the a board yesterday in my first wing-chun class using this exact technique except that it was a punch.
i prefer tkd and karate but this looks good like bruce lee says as long as it teaches you to defend your self in a fight you should learn it
You palm the head and strike the body. Hard and soft
Yep, exactly!
Cool stuff
I think you misunderstand the term 'slapping' it is not meant to split you're head open as you stated but practised in the right way CAN be used as a deadly force ie hitting the right target areas like the ears, eyes, nose, neck, back and side of the head, even the middle and lower areas of your back and last but not least the throat area!!
I remember my karate sensei telling us to punch the corner of a table. That's what it feels like to smack somebody on the chin.
Love learning
i see movement of silat cekak hanafi
Very Good thanks for sharing Guru Çlear.
@sybrenkoninckx -- lol Our doors are always open. You are welcome to come feel first hand.
@187Soowoo Then do a youtube search for slap knockout. You will find all kinds of KOs. Everything from kids being stupid to real street fights. In most of the videos the person doing the KO doesn't understand what they're doing & it's mostly an accident. But if you train it a little this technique becomes very easy to use and has many advantages over a punch. We've taught this to everyone from children to little old ladies and they all have the same success as the guy learning it in the video.
a straight line is the quickest way to an access point than an angled punch
@bubbybaker Comparing Silat & Bjj is apples & oranges (or more accurately apples vs skiing.) Silat is a category that includes over 800 very different martial arts. So you need to be more specific about which style or method you are comparing. Second Bjj & most silat train for very different things. A silat guy will lose quickly in a BJJ match. But make em fight 5 guys with blades & the silat guy has a good chance of walking out in one piece while the bjj guy is almost certainly full of holes.
when girls slap they slaps with the top of their hands which make it sting but not bust open in this they use the middle/bottom part of their hand where there is a hard bone and will crack the board
good stuff!
Very nice
guy on right (Richard Clear) is a mix between Richard Gere and Kevin Bacon
