  • Diners have reached the point of frustration with tipping, and are cutting back. But it is hurting servers. Is there a solution?

No other industry expects their employees wages to be subsidized by customer generosity. If you can’t afford to pay your staff, don’t own a business.

Uber , door dash etc, hair stylist. Uber/lyft drivers rely on tips more than the small share of ride fare they get.

@@LSPalm Door dash is food. Did you really not know that? Uber actively lobbies to keep their drivers categorized as contractors, not employees, which is wrong but still what makes them irrelevant to your attempt to feel intellectual superiority, and I have no issue tipping a hair dresser if they work for themselves. You must be a business owner profiting off the talents of your employees cuz it seems like you’re not used to having to put effort into what you produce.

I don't tip. I also don't dine out, take out or get delivery. the food is overpriced, not as good as preparing your own at home, and they seem to rush you and don't really care about the service. The last time that I attempted something with a tip, it was for a grocery delivery service. 1. the price of each item was higher than it was in the store 2. they wanted a delivery fee and 3. they wanted a service fee and 4. they wanted me to tip on top of all that!! That meant my 20 dollar bag of groceries was going to cost me 35 dollars.. NOPE not happening. I will drive that 5 miles and pick it out, pay for it and bring it home for free. It's not that hard people!! Save your money. We need to change this craziness and the only way to do it is to boycott it. go to Europe or Asia. . They get upset if you tip. It makes the owner look bad if he or she cannot afford to give their employees a living wage.

Restaurant server tips going away? I don't think so. I know of two full service restaurants that tried the no-tipping business model and instead raised prices. Business levels tanked and within 6 months they went back.
But all these other businesses adding tip options at the register? Most of that is driven by the companies that manufacture and sell the POS (Point Of Sale) systems. I ignore that page. I'm not tipping the cashier behind the counter or the plumber.

With restaurants closing nearly every day, why doesn't the blueprint change all together? Severs can find new jobs but people need to eat. Not everyone has time for a home cooked meal. I think we're over the "experience" of eating. We just need actual food.

@anniesshenanigans3815 right?! But I mean places with actual food. You should be able to pick up warm hot buckets of cooked veggies, rice, beans, potatoes, pasta, ect. I'm not a parent but can imagine I'd feel better about throwing that on the table and letting them have at it than a bucket of fried chicken, or some other oily processed garbage.

It's not the tipping of sit down or other services, it's the request for tipping for counter service or excessively high tip rates. Restaurants raised prices and began "demanding" higher tip percentages at the same time. Unfortunately, I fear if you don't tip in some places they may mess with your food in some way. Wrote letters to previously non-tip-oriented places that now ask, the customer service simply shrugged it off. I don't eat at Chick Filet and 5 Guys anymore because I don't want my food potentially tainted. Would have been nice if you talked with CEOs of large companies but instead poke at the little guy.

Tipping should be banned! In the USA they DEMAN tips! Most of us work an 8-10 hour day. A guy siting at his computer in an office doesn't get tips. A construction worker doesn't get tips. Nor does a pilot get tips. Our a girls working in a clothes shop get tips! For me. If I order food or a drink. It should come included with good mangers and good service. I shouldn't have to pay extra for good service. If a server can not do good service. Then it's simple. I shop somewhere else. So why aren't business owners paying so low that server must rely on tips??? It's the business owner that is making money off the servers by paying them min wage!

I do not tip at businesses where the employee is paid a wage for non tipped employees. But, I do tip where I know the person serving me is paid a tipped employee wage. Hair stylist, server at a restaurant, and food delivery drivers, because of I'm asking for their service then I can't expect them to do it for hardly anything. These businesses expect people to tip to subsidize the low wage they pay them. It's a very stressful way to make money, but usually ends up paying more than the minimum wage.

For me, a sit-down tipping restaurant is a special occasion. That attitude will doom businesses. Letting those who can afford make up the difference for poor tippers is not fair. Even seasonal ice cream stands are asking for tips at the walk-up window. I ask what exactly are the owners paying for? Other types of businesses meeting the public also. Wouldn't increased traffic in a non-tip environ give enough to pay decent? Rather pay inflated prices than have servers manipulate for money. Everywhere I go, the same situation. I do not mind paying tips to people who go the extra effort to help. The Rewards Of Smart Business Attitudes. People who use their own cars to deliver have a lot of expense. Their care, consideration and timely delivery should be reflected in their tip. Trouble is treating everyone equally for service when getting a loser. Yes, always a reason that person has for getting slighted so be careful. Crazy what card they will pull out to get back at you. Pay a tip after service is done and you will notice slip-ups in performing the job.
