  • In a rare off-air home recording of the WSM Grand Ole Opry from November 6, 1948, Roy Acuff introduces the "Squire of Readyville", Uncle Dave Macon and his son, Dorris, who perform their version of the 1902 jazz standard "Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home". In this performance, one month after his 78th birthday, Uncle Dave demonstrates the energy and vibrancy still present in the live performances of his final years. Although Uncle Dave Macon left one of the largest catalogues of commercial recordings of any pre-WWII hillbilly artist, his regular performing repertoire contained hundreds more songs that he did not record commercially, and "Bill Bailey" is one of these songs never otherwise committed to disc by Uncle Dave.

Thanks for posting. Uncle Dave sounds pretty much as lively as ever, so close to the end of his life.

@@SirCoughsalot this recording is on a batch of Opry airchecks of Uncle Dave and Dorris dating from the last five years or so of his life, that have circulated on tape for at least 50 years. I'm not sure who made the original source recordings, or what became of them, but I believe Uncle Dave Macon fan and historian Bob Hyland had something to do with either their recording, or the compilation of the recordings, or both. Although Uncle Dave's Bear Family box set covered a HUGE scope in great sound quality, and did include a good many great Grand Ole Opry performances, this is one of a good many known Opry airchecks that weren't included on the box set and to date have never been released commercially.
