      Stage 5 - the hyperspace jump - remains one of my absolute favorite moments in gaming from any generation. Everything about that level fits together so well. In my book, not too shabby for such a "failure" of a console.

    This game has one of the best easter eggs ever. You know how sega cds (especially model 2s- the top loader) were notoriously unreliable and the disc drives prone to failure? Well, should there be a disc read error that interrupts play during the game, the level will actually restart, and you will get an extra life! I wish other games did that!

      @silpheedTandy 3 года назад +6

      i was so happy the first time that happened to me, haha. it took what would have been a miserable time, and made it into a little gift. it also seemed to break the fourth wall in a fun kind of way, as if the game was saying "yeah, "the space-time that keeps my in-game world together glitched for a sec, there. sorry about that. here's an extra life to make up for it :) "

    I remember the intro to Silpheed being the most atmospheric thing I ever witnessed in console gaming. It blew me away when I booted this game up for the first time and it always remained a treat throughout all the times I played through the game.
    That opinion is surely hard to understand to younger people, but back then this was breathtaking. We were only used to regular SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive game intros, usually consisting of some still pictures with midi music. Going from that to this was a huge jump and felt like time travel.

    • @HexenStar
      @HexenStar 4 года назад

      FMV games were pushed forward - not a good move, but it didn't come without reasoning behind it. Arcades enjoyed FMV games for a good number of years before that, which continued to be profitable, since arcades would still have them. The fact that it turned out to be a wrong bet for home consoles - has not so much to do with the quality of FMV, but with the development of gameplay mechanics in games in general.
      As well as the shaping of the console audience. It was not one and the same as the kind that frequented the arcades. Rise of the PC, to boot.

    • @DKingd88

      what helps the illusion is that some of it hits the foreground and can harm the player. both the structures, like canons and asteroids, plus the lasers spit out by the canons, all adds to the effect that you're not just watching an fmv but actually playing within the game's universe as a part of it.

      Novastorm for PC - is a competent rival for Sega/Mega CD Silpheed.
      It is gorgeous and plays really well. Not Silpheed, but a good runner-up.
      Microcosm, unfortunately, is a dud. It's not even in the same category.
      Every version of this game has too many issues with game mechanics, including the Sega CD one. And it's nowhere near as visually creative.

      Thunderhawk was a reason only if you play electric guitar, and want
      to learn some more sweet soloing, Jimi style. In this case, the game is timeless. Final Fight - again, only a rocker's ear (better yet - a musician's) will appreciate this version, cause apart from the amazing music makeover, - it meagerly loses to the arcades in every respect.
      But otherwise - there were several solid reasons to own a Mega CD.
      Silpheed and Soulstar are the ones that step through time, and beat it silly with an intergalactic cuckoo clock. But there was most certainly more, - depending on the person's taste in games.

    • @Majyxs
      @Majyxs 9 лет назад +4

      +earthsteward70 -- Well, the Sega Saturn was PS1's competitor. SegaCD was essentially a heel-grind added to the curbstomp that the Gen's M68k processor had on the SNES's Ricoh 5A22. That said, if the SegaCD was upgraded and got a re-release as the next-gen system to combat the PS1, then it's hard to say, but maybe Sega would have pioneered a movement where every generation of gaming would herald an upgrade to an existing system instead of a new, more expensive console with no backwards compatibility.

    This is one of those rare Sega CD games that doesn’t need to show off fmv to show off the hardware, but rather in-game 3d texture mapping capability. No way would most regular Sega Games run on the vanilla hardware the way this game does. I could be wrong of course.
    Before anyone says Virtua Racing I’ll stop you. That required dedicated circuitry and chip sets in the cartridge to run that are expensive and unique. This only needs the CD and that’s it. I just talk about running your run of the mill cart vs CD. It’s night and day.

    Sort of like that old Atari Firefox arcade laserdisc game, except here the background video (prerendered polygon background fmv) exactly matches the game sprites, giving the illusion of perfect synergy.
    (Edit: Actually, Sega's old laserdisc arcade game Astron Belt is much closer to Silpheed...)

    I bought a retro trio and sold it because there are no games on SNES worth playing today. Mario? RPG? they are all on GBA if you want them. the Genesis and CDX just are better games today . Arcade, strategy, Genesis/CDX holds up really well because of the focus on innovation above refinement. that is evidenced by all the big companies that got their start on the Genesis.

    How much of the graphics is pre rendered and how much is actually done by the mega cd?

    • @JohnnyThousand605
      @JohnnyThousand605 3 года назад +1

      Backgrounds are basically a cinema screen. The bosses and the popcorn enemies are low-poly 3D models. Weapon shots are sprites. I think that's one of the reasons the background video is of low detail, flat shaded models; one it hides the low colour palette of the Mega CD and two it means that when they need a real time model it looks like it still belongs in the same environment as the background ships. It looks pretty dated now but back then it really was mind-blowing =)

    • @ianhosier4042
      @ianhosier4042 3 года назад

      @@JohnnyThousand605 thats pretty crap as i thought all the polygons were rendered by the mega cd in real time.. If its an fmv background then how is it possible to crash into the background or get hit by one of the large lasers?

    • @voxelsofsorrow
      @voxelsofsorrow 3 года назад

      @@ianhosier4042 oh that's easy. they can still overlay hitboxes on the video. they probably have some mapping of time since level start -> hitbox rectangles. or maybe they have an invisible channel on the video that defines a collision map, then they just test intersection.
