Why were entertainers considered LOW CLASS in ancient China?

- Chinese costume films and dramas usually depict ancient Chinese entertainers as low class people, and the female performers are even regarded as prostitutes.
Was this actually the case in ancient China? Were these music institutes, such as Jiaofang, Liyuan, and Yuefu just glorified government-run brothels?
A brief history of ancient Chinese entertainment industry.

I'm a musicologist and historian. I'm already happy if a Chinese period drama manages to let their actors and actresses hold their musical instruments (foremostly the pipa) historical accurate 😅 (I don't know what it is about period dramas world wide that they more often than go for the "creativity" route rather than a creative representation within the bonds set by historical evidence and research 😅)
And thank you very much for sharing about Chinese history, especially music history, again. 💛 It's quite difficult finding papers etc. that cover that topic and are not in Chinese or not about Peking opera.
I have seen the Haolan, Ruyi, Zhen Huan, and Yanxi Palace dramas, and I always wondered about that. It was particularly sad in Yanxi Palace when the one consort was not allowed to sing opera for herself. I saw Shen Yun last year in Reno, NV! It was wonderful, so vibrant and joyful. I would have gone this year if not for health care issues. 😒 Next year though!
This was very informative and I knew about the Shen Yun performances I wanted to go the one that was held in my state earlier this year but being a college student I couldn’t afford it hopefully one day I can see the show in person.
Hey Ally again love your videos and just wondering what you would recommend for more information on real Chinese culture? I have always loved learning Chinese history and the culture and I want to know more.
I saw real and touching Chinese ancient story from ShenYun.
This was fascinating and very informative, thank you!
Thank you for raising this up!
very informative, thank you!
Great video!
Hello, thank you for everything you do here on your channel. I am a new subscriber and am really enjoying your videos. Thank you ! ♡
Thank you for the information.
Very informative
It makes my blood boil a little, because all these noble people enjoy the talent and hardwork of these people, but they still put them in lower class.
First.
Welcome back!
This was wonderful, thank you so much for all your hard work from the research to the editing. So impressed.
What do you & others watching your YT channel recommend watching online for historical accuracy?
Super fascinating and elegantly written and presented.
Ok...it saddens me that my suspicion of Ally as part of Falun Gong is correct. She puts out good content but tend to distort the truth when she talks about post 1949 China. As well as her support for Shen Yun, a Falun Gong backed stage performance is a no no for me.
same!! thank you for saying this! i just came too the same realization after this video. sad. glad i’m not the only one.
agreed
Agree
do you actually know what it is???
I am third to watch interesting thank you so much ally for ancient Chinese secret story sisinis
Oh, Ally, you have Shen Yu as a sponsor! I have been to one, and I could never believe their shows are representative of all of China's past. They are stale!
When I saw the performances, I immediately thought, SHEN YUN!! And made a really huge smile 🤣
I wish I can attend one of their performances someday... Preferably in SEA 🥲
Can you make video on Indian Chinese ancient history (relationship)
So this is an example of a caste system in ancient China
Can you make video about Xianxia?
My guess is you must be from Taiwan cos you admire Shue Yuen dancing Troop.
Yes, you are guessing
I'm thinking she might be an immigrant to the U.S. Shen Yun is based in the U.S. and is very popular here, especially on the coasts. I find ads in the mail about it all the time. Plus, Ally is a lot more comfortable in English than the typical English learner who has not lived in an English-speaking country. And she doesn't have a Taiwanese accent.
She can just admire the show as well. 🤷♀️ You can like a show like this without liking Falu Gong and their practices.
@@catinabox3048 After I read your comment I checked her Five Thousand Years RUclips site and you are right, her channel is located in the U.S. I am constantly amazed by people (like tean tan) who comment and don't bother checking simple information.
If you would bother to check for simple information, you would find that her channel is based in the U.S., which is not a crime. People are, in most places, free to believe what they want.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👍
oh i thought it was because certain instruments with string came from the nomadic steppe people (and those are bad or smt) like the erhu
❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤♥️❤
Shen Yun is far from being an accurate representation of ancient Chinese culture, music and dance. It's very propagandic.
Xianxia nowadays are worst :'(
