Was about to say this. He shouldn't be talking about their value until he actually inspects one himself. Seiko 5's are good but they're not as good as most SM models even spec for spec. They're also not the best out there in their own price point especially if they have a bezel on them.
All my Seiko 5's are Sports as they're harder for Seiko QC to f them up 🤣

@@bluecollarwatches7048 They have sub $200 models that are worth a look and during sales season you can get a bunch more below that mark as well.
In particular the one I go to a lot is their Ranger homage with applied indices. The watch is pure class. I really wish they made it in black enamel and silver accents. The current black enamel version is in gilt.
WatchDives makes a meca quartz version of it below $100 too.

They sent me a prepaid shipping label to return it and I got a refund in less then 10 days. I bought the same watch again but had to pay about $3 more because the sale was over. Comparing seiko and San Martin is like comparing the workmanship of pagani design to Tudor. San Martin is on another level, even Tudor can learn something about finishing from SM. I sold all my seikos after purchasing my first San Martin. That’s how good they are and the price is a bargain for what you are getting. It looks to me like the Chinese will do to the Swiss watch industry what seiko did to it when they came up with the quartz movement.

I still have a few Ali specials. I like my Speedmaster and Daytona homage chronos with the Seiko mechaquartz movements in them. There's usually been problems in my experience with Ali specials, though. I have mixed feelings about them.
I had a Steeldive Oris 65 Diver homage that I managed to really like, even though the stem was a bit short and you had to really press the crown in hard and fast, to engage the movement after setting it. The blue a.r. coated domed crystal and everything else was great about it, though.
Some of the older homage watch makers like Corgeut and Bliger, I would say, don't even go there. Unless you want to learn how to do repairs and fix your own watches. I have a Bliger Seamaster homage I had to pull the bezel insert out of and reposition it. I also had to source, but and fit a new crown and stem to it, after the crown pulled off when I pulled it out. I was proud of myself for learning how to size and fit a new stem, though.
I'm out of the watch game, for the moment, though. Practicing abstinence for the moment and currently holding a collection of about 18 with a few G-Shocks, Ali-Ex's, Seiko and 3 Swiss (the Ball with tritium is super accurate and especially nice).

That Benyar brand is a lower entry department store line of watches from the parent company of Pagani Design. Mostly quartz and 30M W.R.
I got a Tandorio Flieger automatic recently but came defective the minute and second hands collide and hit and stops the movement.
As for Pagani Design, I've not received a bad one after 15 Paganis. But none of them are first year runs. All the QC issues seem to have been ironed out or revised. I have Rolex and Omega homages, an AP and two Panerai homages.
San Martins seem to be very high production quality and control. The Seestern and DUKA are usually homages of DOXA dive watches. I own a DUKA made Seamaster 300M sold under their Dexcar branding. I got it for an introductory price, which was a steal. It's pretty well made. But the bracelet used male end links which is a major negative. I swapped on a silicone strap and it's now a daily wearer.
I believe there a couple parent companies that produce multiple tiers of quality from entry to higher end homage and OEM private microbrands. LIGE, is one such companies (FeelNever, LIGE, Terami). Parent of Pagani Design sells under two other brands, ie. Benyar.

I would take San Martin over a lowly Seiko 5 every day of the week! Unless you are in love with seeing "Seiko" on the dial, it's not even a contest. Complete no-brainer. I love San Martin and have yet to get problematic quality issues after buying 6 of them. My only issue (which was fixable) was that one had some hairs caught in the caseback that had been tucked underneath the end links!! I saw them when taking off the bracelet to put a strap in its place. I opened the caseback and removed the black hairs (about half a dozen), and all has been good. Very strange but yeah thankfully a one-off. I have had good experiences with Seestern (Doxa homage), Steeldive (SD1970 and SD1953), Boderry and Baltany. I won't touch Pagani Design though. There's just something soulless and nasty about that brand that I just don't want to be associated with.

Even 500$ Seikos are not on the same level as 200$ San Martin, at least from what I see on internet and my own few experiences. I have had 4 Seikos, 1 Orient, 1 Heimdallr and 1 San Martin. For the specs/quality for money, I don't think I will buy any more Seikos in future.
Just stop buying that 40$ garbage, you know they have to compromise on something. San Martin just released 4th version of their best models, improving minor details from customer feedback. Cutting down from that 200 will mean skipping QC, regulating, AR etc.

    • @bluecollarwatches7048

Seiko certainly feels they have an advantage with name recognition, and they actually do. I don’t buy my watches to resell them, but the reality is if you needed quick cash a pawn shop would buy the seikos and most likely pass on the San Martin. You would only get a fraction of the real value though, I went into a local pawn shop recently and what they had they wanted full retail on the watches they had in the display case so I passed.

If you bought it from AliExpress it’s a good chance it’s fake, I’ve seen them in there and they are not crazy priced. There are sellers that fake seiko, citizen, omega, and a host of others but those stores usually get shut down. I always look up the store, never ever buy from a new store off there, and check the comments and that will be a good guide. I dont't want to be rude but is not worth to spend your money on chinese watches ... If you want to go cheap from japan I recomand :Seiko ,casio , citizen . From Germany : Sinn, Stowa (best value for money). Swiss are overpriced in my opinion. I don't care if a watch is cheap. I just want to know that it's well built and have the specs I'm happy with. Sapphire, clear AR, solid end links, decent clasp, screw-pins for resizing preferable, ceramic bezel where appropriate, great attention to detail on the dial, aligned bezels. The Japanese brands you mention are pretty disappointing on these fronts - they are the ones not worth it - unless you like rewarding mediocrity. As for Sinn and Stowa, they are very much of a certain look and centred for the most part around flieger and pilots style watches. There's only so many of those I want. I have a Laco flieger but most of the designs and styles I'm into are divers. Swiss are definitely overpriced.

I have six San Martins. Sold off my Omega, Breitling and TAG Heuer because of them. No-one on God's Earth can tell me that San Martin are overpriced - they are the bargain of the century as far as I'm concerned. But we all value things differently in terms of quality and price. It probably boils down to two distinct perspectives:
      1. If you've discovered San Martin coming from the mid Tier luxury Swiss level, then San Martin is a dream come true, and great value
      2. If you're just getting into watches and/or have a limited budget, and have tried the likes of Steeldive etc first and are happy with that, then yeah I get it - to those people San Martin might be a bridge too far.
Note I also really like Steeldive and they are often less than half the price of the equivalent San Martin. So whereas I see San Martin as fantastic value for money, I see Steeldive as mind-blowing value!

Again, for those saying that Seiko 5's are worse than San Martin, you are both right and wrong, and that depends on what you value on a watch. Seiko 5 is the obvious choice for some due to its original design, dials which pop more than San Martin and most AliX brands and the brand heritage that you get with Seiko. San Martin is the obvious choice if you want a homage watch, care alot about value for money and want to get the best bang for your buck, personally I prefer Seiko for the reasons above and cant bring myself to buy a San Martin due to the unoriginal design.
