    Great video!
    I bet you could have sped up the hair card rotation process with a combination of a few things.
    1. Proportional editing (with a random falloff for lazy, some other curve for pro-mode)
    2. Probably individual origins as your transform pivot.
    3. "Normal".. or local as your transform orientation, whichever one does the thing right
    Then select a strand of hair, constrain rotation to whatever the right axis is (Z or Y probably) and rotate. Crank your mouse wheel until the proportional editing blast radius lets you do the whole head at once.

    Super helpful tutorial, however does the Hair designer work on Unity 6 and URP, or have they not updated the package. It would be great if you elaborated more on compatibility in your reviews, because its a common issue with Unity versions.

    BY FAR!! the FUNNIEST!! commentary TUTORIAL!! EVERRR!!! HAhahahahahaha. I just love it!! hahahahaha.
    But hey jokes aside, how does the Hair Designer asset affects performance? Like can you do a short video of like how many Benny-s can you have with that asset before the game starts crashing. Or even blue screen?? Benny screen?? whatever hahaha. Or maybe even just pop in a free low poly scene and insert the Hair Designer into EVERY asset in the scene and see how it goes you know?

  • @KHJohan
    @KHJohan 7 месяцев назад +6

    Why didnt you just make a cones containing other cones, then use the hair texture with alpha clipping. Then render the back faces with a slightly darker version of the hair texture.
    You could then make the hair a soft-body mesh.
    This way you get low geometry.
    For the body, you could make a hair texture with no alpha, but with a normal map. Then do a second-pass or doublicate the mesh and grow it a tiny bit with a hair texture where hair is clumbed that has normal map and alpha. So when the body moves, it will have the illusion of hair moving, despite there being no extra vertices.
    I’m a complete amateur, so you might have a reason for not doing it this way, I’d love to know why :)

      No worries! I'm an amateur at this kind of thing too!
      Like I said in the video there really wasn't a ton of information for me or at least I wasn't really good at finding it. But I went down this path after learning about Unity HDRP's hair shader and how they function using "Hair Cards" which are usually quads attached to the mesh with hair texture on them. So my research just brought me down the path of how to generate those in a performant way in blender even though I never ended up using the shader anyway. Your cone method never even crossed my mind actually 😋
      However, the fur actually works very similarly to how your describing. Hair designer automatically generates multiple layers of extruded hulls and uses a noise texture to create the hair, blending from a dark root color to a lighter tip color.

    I've found performance is too terrible in Unity with most hair systems still. There's an add on for blender called Hair Tool that is great for designing hair card styles that are so good for performance. Went that direction. That add on does have a *bit* of learning curve but once you get the basics it's kind of great for realistic styles.

    • @AddyValentine
      @AddyValentine  6 месяцев назад +1

      That's definitely a great route to go down. I had been looking at Hair Tool myself but I'm more comfortable with my Unity skills than I am my blender skills so I didn't want to put down the $60 in the wrong direction. But it looks like a great asset for people with more blender skills
