Now Kareem, he was just dominating the college ranks with his dunks, because he was just bigger and vastly more talented than anybody else in the college game. So the NCAA, in a effort to stop him, made slam dunks illegal. Can you imagine that? I would say racist, and perhaps it was, but there were black players in the game that couldn't stop him, so maybe it was Alcindorist (His name at the time was Alcindor) So what he did was develop the sky hook, which as it turned out was every bit unstoppable as his dunk . Magic's floaters were so cold. Great finisher and touch around the basketball. Also "Magic couldn't shoot" is a myth. He developed a respectable 3 point shot going into the early 90's and had a couple of seasons were he shot over 90 percent from the freethrow line(85% career). He had a mid range jumper, sick post game and was also clutch.

Once Magic developed that set outside shot and hook shot in the post mirroring Kareem's, he was absolutely unguardable. Bird was still a great player and MJ was obviously poised to take over the league in the next few years, but 86-87 belonged to Earvin Magic. He was clearly the best overall player in basketball this season, leading the Lakers to a championship with one of the greatest single season teams in NBA history, and winning his 1st MVP.

Not to sound like a hater, but if you didn't include Kobe in a conversation he didn't belong in then I wouldn't have to say this. Kobe is the most overrated "clutch performer" in sports history. He's not even a top 5 most clutch in NBA history. He might squeeze into the top 10 most clutch. MJ and Bird were clearly more clutch than Kobe.

      @@professionalcurrysexual
Yeah that's why he might squeeze into the top 10 along with being a good clutch defender, but look at the amount of game winner attempts and the fact that he was 5-22 on go ahead/game tying shots in the last 10 secs of the 4th qtr/OT of playoff games. Really statistically wasn't even particularly clutch if you look at percentages, but having the most game winners of all time somewhat offsets that. He definitely isn't as clutch as Jordan or Bird though. Like I said, I wouldn't even put him in the top 5 most clutch NBA players of all time, but he might squeeze into my top 10 most clutch. I think clutch ability is a bit overblown anyways because crunchtime is a much smaller sample size compared to the rest of the game and players that are better throughout the first 43mins of the game are usually the better players in the last 5mins too.

My favorite Magic shots were when he'd, literally, walk right up to 20 feet and pop a completely uncontested flatfooted shot. He could do that because the defense was playing off him, trying to stop his passing. That's respect, and that's a man who could play opposing defenses like a violin.
