Cleveland Browns edge defender Myles Garrett is the best defensive player in football. Here's why.

I would love to see some stats on how often Myles gets held without a flag being thrown. I guarantee he’s leading the league in that category as well
Yes, we need a Hold Rate percentage to pair up with the Pass Rush Win Rate.
I'd bet it's ridiculously high. It's the only way to beat him
And he is learning how to beat being held in real time.
Most holding is not strategic enough to be concentrated on a single player. Garrett might get held more than most since he seems to attack from a nine-wide technique a lot, at least in this video. The dude is definitely a "handful."
It's every single down.
I can’t believe you didn’t show the play where Myles threw Williams to the ground like a sack of potatoes
There was a problem with the clip on the copy of the game I used. Wish I could’ve had it in there
@@BillyStephens Shame! That was amazing to see Garrett’s raw strength on that one.
& didn't get a sack
So, was it worth showing?
@@nowaynohow2023If Stiff-arms on nobodies make highlight films, tossing a 350 pound future first ballot HOF'er on his butt definitely should. Pretty simple logic.
"...when the alien disguised as a pass rusher can get home before the unblocked rusher can." That was good, I wasn't expecting that.
Love that you tied the Hutchinson video into this one. Makes it worth going back and watching previous videos again. You do a great job teaching football!
That play at 8:18 you highlighted is nuts. I was watching the game and didn't even notice it until you pointed it out. How does somebody go around a HoF left tackle and beat an unblocked DB to the quarterback? That's ludicrous.
A great lead in from the previous graph from the Hutcheson video. Would be great to see this in future draft scouting videos:) great as always
Myles' movement off the line is so fast in fact that during his first season he got called for false start a bunch, when in fact he hadn't, The refs just didn't have context for somebody who could move that quickly. He had to slow his jump down by like half a second.
He made Trent Williams look old and Brittle.
He's a monster. Always in the QB face.
Garrett is a monster but it's a little unfair to say that when Williams was injured don't ya think?
@@ninjacow I'm a die hard 49ers fan since about 4 years old. He's not as good as he once was and get very old and brittle. Too slow on the feet. Watch the tape and study football. Lack of knowledge.
Nah, An Alien!! He's an Alien, Remember? Lol
Great video can’t get enough of these breakdowns during the seasons 💪
Awesome video! Even growing up in the game, I feel smarter every time I watch one of your videos
Content quality is top notch
He’s being held on every rep in tape too
Even as a Steelers fan, I cant deny that man is a monster.
TJ is pedestrian in comparison. And you know it.
@captainorangesburner Lol not taking that bait. You're entitled to your opinion bruh. Both are hall of fame players. Not taking anything away from either of them.
@@captainorangesburnerlol you're a clown
Not a Monster, He's an Alien, Remember? We Browns fans know TJ is no joke. Like you said, both Hofer's. They play different positions in opposite type Defenses. Why debate it even. Just enjoy the show.
@chistophersapp2888 I like people like you showing appreciation to a divisional player without bashing we need more fans like you
Damn man you did a great job on this keep it up! Also I firmly believe they don't call holds on Myles because they know they would have to every play if they did😂
💯
Billy Stephens, I love your content, you're going places lad.
Look at bryce huff on that graph he gonna be crazy if philly uses him right. Love his move selection and knowledge of the game real football player right there
Hi Billy, love the content. You rock!
It’s so relieving not seeing everyone compare him and TJ.
ppldont shut tf up about it and its annoying af,if myles does anything a bunch of braindead steelers fans screech tj is better
You really can't. 2 different positions and Watt gets far better results
Watt sucks and he's always injured. Maybe robot Russell will make you some subway commercials.
Yes, his "bend" without losing his angle on the QB is phenomenal. Being that quick off the line means the LT is backpedaling right from the snap. This denies the blocker any chance to maintain a position of strength by bending his knees and waist. This turns stopping Garrett into "Dancing with the Stars," where Myles has the lead and opposing linemen have no choice but to follow the two-time All-Pro wherever he decides to go. During his career (2017-23), Garrett trails only T.J. Watt in sacks, 85.5 to 80. The Browns DE has been more consistent, with double-digit sacks five straight seasons, and is on pace for 17-18 in 2023.
whats crazy to me is how when you pulled up the stat sheets, how bryce huff is consistently top 4. dude is on a minute restriction and barely gets any recognition for being a top 5 rusher rn
It blows my mind that anybody thinks anybody is better than garret. Dude is in a league of his own. And it's not close.
quality video. Thanks man
I wanna learn how to be this detailed. This is why I watch your videos
Hey billy Ive been a fan of your content for the longest time. Could you consider doing a video on my chargers, and how on paper we had one of the best defenses going into the season, but now have a bottom 5 D? If im gonna go insane watching this team I at least want to get a pros view on what we can never get right despite having all the supposed pieces
at 8:25 that call makes sense because a sack there would put them out of field goal range. and up to that point i would be confident in the DBs covering and there being pressure
Imo you’re way more likely to get a sack there by dropping 7 and scheming a 1 on 1 for Garrett
@@BillyStephens i think they had negative passing yardage up to that drive playing mostly man coverage. and even a field goal right there probably would have got in. personally i dont mind the call from a philosophical standpoint
Imagine him in the 90s when you could actually hit a quarterback instead of throttling down or hitting their side instead of body.
Would love to see what that chart looks like to end the season ngl
this is an alternate channel of Brett Kollmans right? the voice sounds exactly the same
Good work
We are no longer the hapless “Browns”. We are the mighty elves!
Hell yeah go Browns!!!
His inside move is his double team beater
Praise Garrett!!
The real cheat code in the NFL is the Eagles’ brotherly shove “QB sneak”. Even the madden devs would’ve been patched that out.
he looks like an apex predator, terrifying
After back~2~back pass rush videos
Makes me curious about the brick walls trying to prevent said pressure~bringers 🤔
Any plans to highlight some OL???
OR!!
Instead of a player~focused video, what about a breakdown of the "snap when ready" Jedi hand wave Guards have been doing lately .. I don't remember that being a thing years ago so id wanna when & why that started cause as someone who only played in Jr High ball (6th - 9th grade) it looks really odd to me
Great video. Best pass rusher in the league and a top 2 edge.
Myles and Trent was just greatness canceling out greatness.
Myles threw greatness on his ass and made him bleed.
So, this is a fantastic video. That said, to me this shows more that Garrett is the best pass "pure" rusher. That is the most valuable skill, but I don't think that automatically makes him the best defender.
To me the comparison (contrast) with T.J. Watt is the clearest. As your chart nicely showed Watt is not close to Garrett at his ability to generate instant pressure. The fits with all the film I've seen of both. And yes, instant pressure is the best kind of pressure and the type that controls the most for circumstance.
But...sacking someone 4 seconds into a dropback is still really valuable! While these kind of sacks are much more random as a general matter, Watt has now shown year-in-year out that he can navigate through pockets and take down QBs who are scrambling, trying to step up, etc; Often those sacks are preventing QBs from hitting big plays thanks to WRs having gotten open. So, by removing pressure generated later on from the analysis you're skewing against the players who have a genuine skill at creating pressure later-on in the play.
I do think Garrett is better, but I also think it's a smaller gap than this kind of comparison would suggest (and, similarly, I think you can make a real case for either of Bosa or Parsons, rather Garrett being a slam-dunk over the two of them).
The main difference is right now Garrett is averaging pressure at an absurd 2.1 seconds. So before receivers are into their routes or plays even develop Garrett is already at the QB. QBs have no options so they are just throwing balls into the dirt
@@markhenry2558you get it
@markhenry2558 yet he isnt sacking them so that means absolutely nothing
Love him or hate him but id want Myles on the Bengals. imagine Hendricson and Myles on both ends! That would be an actual nightmare for Qb's
It might just be me but your voice sounds very similar to Brett Kollmann
Do you think more Athletic prospects like kayvon thibodeaux or travon walker could become like this because this seems like this is abnormal but they could just do this to right?
Why do you say more athletic? Garrett is 280 and runs a 4.6 benches 450lbs and has a 47" vertical
@@markhenry2558 I mean more athletic than most edges not Myles that's the similarity
@@IdrinkWindexskullemojiah gotcha
Walker is a bust and Kayvon while serviceable and a good starter will be lucky to get 10 sacks in a season ever
@@obukohwoogheneakpobo3011 so you don't know ball?
Hard to find non-gimmicky clips, huh?
I tell people allll the time if I had to go back an re do the draft when myles was taken at 1. Id still take him over mahomes given the Browns flaws in the roster at that point in time. So much goes into qb success in the NFL. There is no way MAHOMES would have been the same player, had he been drafted by the Browns at 1 .
boggles my mind how steelers fans say he’s overrated still
Billy one thing I have to disagree with you is although Myles is our best player, the biggest strength on our defense is actually our secondary. So far this season our three corners are playing like pro ballers and Grant Delpit is performing like an all pro. As a Browns fan, our Dline is definitely excellent this season. However, our coverage is the reason we could bliz more and overload the front to gives Myles more opportunities to have one on one with an OT
Could not agree more
Part of that though can be attributed to Garret and the rest of the D-Line. When the QB is constantly forced to rush their throw because Garret is relentlessly in their face, it helps the secondary a great deal.
It goes hand in hand. Its a similar approach to Howie building the Eagles defense in recent years. Though he put more emphasis on trench talent/depth and getting the right athletes to play corners. Schwartz knows his secondary is overall talented enough so he plays them straight up man and can use Delpit as a box safety. Hell the secondary is also good with run defense which in of itself is an asset. So in passing downs the defensive trench talents and Myles can just make their money.
someone show TJ Watt this
someone needs to tell tj watt and all his cohorts 😂😂
Oh Jesus, come on now. This is not a knock on Garrett, he's great, TJ Watt is on another level. To call him the most talented, dominant, and most valuable non QB eliminates all of your credibility.
Love Watt. Great player. What does he do better than Garrett?
he stated in the beginning about sacks and pressures being highly volatile and a function of what's going on around the player. pass rush win rate/pressure vs double team rate probably is the best pass rush evaluator stat because not only does it show the simple win stats but also how much the opposing teams OCs and Oline coaches respect that player based on the percentage of chip/double team help
Maybe you should watch this video again, he actually covers that topic. Also Watt goes one-on-one against right tackles. Garrett has been doubled and tripled while playing Orlando Brown and Trent Williams... that is 2 different universes
@@BillyStephens Everything. Watt is the complete player whereas Garrett is a great get after the QB guy. How many INTs does Garrett have in his career? How many tackles? How many forced fumbles?
*Career stats....*
Watt 6 Ints
Garrett ZEROOOOO
Watt 348 tackles (255 solo)
Garrett 276 (186)
Watt 25 forced fumbles
Garrett 14
*Furthermore, TJ Watt is a WAY bigger game changer. He's clutch. He goes 100% all of the time and when the game is on the line he goes 120%*
*Proof?*
In games decided by less than 7 points. Watt (58 games) and Garrett (43 games), the stats break out like this...
Watt 57.5 sacks
Garrett 35
Watt 235 tackles (solo and combined)
Garrett 135
Watt 65 tackles for loss
Garrett 36
Watt 115 QB hits
Garrett 67
Watt 17 forced fumbles
Garrett 10
Watt 6 fumble recoveries
Garrett 1
Watt 29 passes defended
Garrett ZEROOOOO
Watt 5 ints
Garrett ZEROOOOO
Watt can beat you in a dozen different ways. Garrett? He's really good at creating pressure.
In the biggest moments Watt shines 100X brighter than Garrett. TJ Watt all day, every day over Garrett, except if you're Cleveland fan.
@@Gagan_S Yeah yeah yeah.....a lot of ifs ands and butts from nerds who over analyze. See my post above.
(this isn't a slight on nerds, Im actually a numbers guy kinda nerd myself)
I agree Jackson looked like a little guy
Pass rush win rate is a 100% subjective "stat". No edge rusher has more of an impact and more game altering plays than Mr T.J. Watt.
Actually yes, teams are using 20-25 percent of their offense schemed just to slow down Garrett, while facing players like Orlando Brown and Trent Williams. This has freed up other players it's no coincidence as soon as the Browns brought in a couple decent defensive players they instantly became the best defense since 1970
They can't cope it's hilarious.
@@captainorangesburner can't cope? Pull up stats that aren't subjective. Sacks? Interceptions? Tackles? Tackles for loss? Forced fumbles? TJ is better in every one of those categories throughout their career. It's y'all that can't cope. Pass rush win rate 🤣
@@fsalazar505 if you only go by box score stats then Watt is better than Prime Aaron Donald right?
@@markhenry2558 different positions. Plus AD is almost done playing where as TJ still has hopeful my many more years.
Not even in the top 5 in sacks. straight trash against the run. dude is good not anywhere close to Tj Watt or Nick Bosa.
he's the 3rd best is his own division. he's a one trick pony that explains why his stats are super average.
Nowhere near close to Nick Bosa is a wild take. I do love the Bosas though as a Ohio State fan
Could you imagine what Garretts stats would be if he faced right tackles one-on-one like Watt does,, rather than lead the NFL in double teams while facing left tackles!!! Dude would have like 25 sacks already. Sadly that will never happen because teams are using 20-25% of their offensive personnel and scheme just to slow him down
I never understand the left tackle right tackle argument. A good coach uses their best pass rusher where they are most effective. There is a reason guys like Crosby and Parsons move all over the place. Saying Garrett is better purely because he rushes off of the left tackle is completely idiotic.
@@ihatetheantichrist9545Watt can't play against left tackles, they tried him there his first couple seasons and was completely ineffective,, left tackles are better than right tackles (that's why they make WAY more money) they play the better tackle on the left side because that's the QBs blind side. Regardless of this though Garrett has now played 2 of the best tackles in the NFL Trent Williams and Orlando Brown, Watt is yet to face anyone ranked higher than 30th.
But also to your post Garrett like Parsons does play all over the defensive front he has even lined up as a DT and middle linebacker on a few snaps
@@markhenry2558bingo
It's ok.. this dinosaur 🦕 is made from a unique DNA
Myles will be back soon
Can you PLEASE PLEASE do a side by side comparison of Garrett vs Watt, every single NFL teams fan base is so sick of Steelers fans belittling their teams best defensive players by flooding conversations drooling over Watt,, it's really getting annoying
poor baby! Watt is better, deal
Your so right man, Garrett is the best in the league. Steelers fan are just salty because he almost killed there shitty back-up QB.
He's not better than TJ, sorry
@@knowledgeseeker1528yeah he is….
@@thedancinglobster Dude TJ has 7 interceptions as an edge rusher. 7! How many does MG have? And before you say it nearly half of those weren't in coverage. MG is great but TJ is on another level. He's carrying his entire team not just the defense.
But steelers fans will say TJ is better than him and Nick bc he has more sacks 🤮
No. Well, actually he does have...what 6 or 8 more sacks at this point, but that's not why he's better. He's more complete. He's a disruptor and game changer. He literally does everything better than Garrett. Everything. Especially when the game is on the line.
@@Boblib1970mg is easily a better pass rusher and has more technique
Steeler fans are unable to cope. Without football they would kill themselves.
Imagine the mental gymnastics required to ignore actual stats that count, make up new stats and all kind of what if scenarios to disprove why other players consistently outperform Garret. This is gold. Pure gold.
Watt is better than Nick wdym?
Go bills
Steelers fans haven’t gotten here yet?
He hasn't lead the league in sacks once in his career, nor has he won a DPOY. Until then TJ is the best pass rusher in the league
Cuz it's rigged and he is constantly held. TJ faces one on ones. Garret faces double and triple teams. Look at how the Ravens played Myles vs the way they played TJ the following week. You sound clueless.
Not a single NFL DC or coach would take TJ Watt over Myles Garrett.
Thats fine. Myles is still the best DE in the league regardless. Watt is an OLB relying one-on-ones, and DPOY is handed out based on basic box score stats that casual fans understand, like sacks. Not things like efficiency against double and triple teams.
Aaron Donald and Myles Garrett are both better at their positions than Watt is at his.
@@theangrypelican5270 thats totally fine. I just think watt is a better player because he has the hardware to prove it. Myles is a generational athlete, bro is crazy strong and fast.
