Given the importance of these bases to NATO at the time they were constructed I would have no doubt they are linked underground. Some people would have you believe this would be too complex but if you look at the length and amount of tunnels under London and other cities it is easily achievable if the justification is there, which.surely for these bases at the time would have been the case.

The space station is about 50 miles up and on a clear night when I first saw it I had to ring up a mate to find out what it was.
