The hook's opening couplet alone is a masterclass in razor-sharp political irony: 'Told my children western education is forbidden / Might as well sell what's left of your Ritalin' is a devilishly astute lyric.
@@tobtob831 First off the irony is already incredibly apparent by the character telling his children Western education is forbidden, as given the surrounding context it would certainly seem that the setting is in the 'Western' world somewhere. This irony is underlined by the knowingness that in shunning Western education his children will be invariably hamstrung by the prevailing hegemonic order. Presumably, given their parental admonition to reject Western education, the children are probably perceived of as disruptive, attention-deficient misfits by the school authorities/health professionals, who subsequently prescribe them Ritalin in order to pacify them. The father character, in his ready awareness of this situation, then very cynically recommends they sell their meds in order to make some money - to get on that grind, as it were. Thus the children find themselves in the fatalistic position of a self-fulfilling failure.

Great video. But I can't help but feel like some of woods' songs would be better served by videos that show the vivid stories woods tells. Case in point. Western Education is Forbidden almost always calls for me to imagine each line in my head with each listen. Would have loved to see a director's impression of this one.
