Thick end of 30lbs of new potatoes Jason, you're going to be enjoying that harvest for a few weeks, hard to beat new potatoes with lashings of real butter, Kerrygold for us here...
The total weight of the two homemade compost buckets was slightly higher than the total weight of the two with shop compost and potato fertiliser. I'd be sticking with homemade as long as it gives the most bigger potatoes. Thank you for making the video 🙂
I cut the tops off my Charlotte (in 30litre tubs) then stack the tubs in the garage. They last all the way through to January that way, as the compost slowly dries & prevents the potatoes from becoming dessicated. Then in January, the last couple of tubs give me my next year's seed potatoes. Four years on & no sign of virus or other problems.
From experience, give Charlotte at least 95 days & preferably more for the maximum harvest (115 days this year in my case). I wait until the tops are completely yellow before cutting them off touse or store.
Thank you for a very interesting presentation, much the same results as my findings this year. My feelings are that shop bought compost lacks a lot of nutrients that home made or the way shop compost was a few years ago. The other thing I have noticed is the lack of moisture retention and how much the same brand compost varies in colour and composition. I suppose it depends on what they compost during the year. I.E. Christmas trees early in the year followed by garden waste, lawn clippings with lawn treatment and fir tree branches, in fact any old rubbish that we gardeners would not put on the compost heap. That's my rant so now off to buy some more shop bought compost. 😊 Great garden a lot of hard work, well done.😊
Interesting results and lovely harvest. I've done a similar thing with 20 buckets, all home made composts; 2 yr composted dog poo, 2yr woodchip, and thermophillic some with BF&B some without, all main crop not quite ready yet
@@leatonveg the results are finally in, no clear winner, average was 7.3lb, lowest was 6.1lb from composted dog poo, but so was the highest at 9lb (this did have 1 single spud just shy of 2lb which bumped it up) most were 6.5-7.5 with no clear winner/loser, plucking flowers dint seem to make any difference, adding BF&B dint seem to make any difference, the thermophillc compost with BF&B had the best looking plants for the longest period (waxy leaves, no leaf spots, vibrant) I was convinced these would be the winners, but that din't seem to translate into higher yeild overall when I tipped them out. I sowed carrots into the tubs as I cropped the spuds, seems to be going well, think I'll repeat sucsession this nxt yr too.
Wow them Potatoes looked great...I'm really new to home growing veggies etc, I'm growing everything in pots, I've done about 10 potatoes pots so looking forward to my very first ever harvest.. I worked out how much it cost me to grow my own & to be honest with shop bought compost plus bit of feed its more expensive than buying a bag from supermarket, but I'm hoping the taste will be worth it.. Great informative video. Thankyou
Thank you, I enjoyed watching your video with informations on what compost you added to the buckets, cutting or not cutting the flowers and the result of the experiment. Very informative without too much talk like some of the others just to lengthen the video. Thanl you much
Great video and really interesting :). I mixed last years spent compost with some shop bought + potato feed, so looking forward to seeing how they do this year. Hopefully next year it will be more of my own compost 🤞
What a brilliant and informative video. I just wonder what the results would have been with home-made compost and the added fertiliser? Leaving the flowers on? But I know to leave the flowers on all of mine now.. thank you so much for a great video Jase 😀
Hi Laura. It’s through trial and error, experiments and mistakes we learn. Of course every year and every garden is different too which can alter results
Hi. Potatoes need a rest period from harvest to the following spring before planting to grow properly. I’m not sure storing green ones that long would work as they may rot.
@@leatonveg thank you for telling , i just want to tel here in algeria north africa we can't keep seeds we buy hybrid seed from companies like hzpc and agrico... We grow it for once or twice after the yeald will 2 potatoes per plant we don't have original and organic seed
That foliage is way way way way too healthy looking to be harvesting them now. Many grand blessings everyone
Love a good Potato reveal, all in all a great harvest there.
Good experiment with meaningful resultss
Lovely garden!

Hi Debbie. Thanks for watching. But compare organic supermarket potatoes to what yours cost when you know the weight.
@@leatonveg Ah yeah forgot, need to.check out the Organic range opposed to the Wonky.. lol
Also. The dirt gets reused

Good video & very interesting. I’m still planting potatoes so I’ll be using my homemade compost.
Hi Sean. Thanks. Yea home made seems to be the way forward I think
1/2 rotted is better for potatoes

Hi Debz. Home made is always best.
I'm thinking we don't have specific potato fertilizer 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Vitax make one 👍@@MissBetsyLu

Thank you 🙏
You opened my eyes 😊
Thanks Mark
Enjoyed the experiment. Thanks!
Great video !!!!
Thank you. Much appreciated
I have a small garden, so wonder what you can recommend to grow during the winter months 😊
Harvested too soon!
Good explanation
You threw a spud out into the vegetation bucket and possibly one into the compost on the 2nd bucket.
😆 always miss a few
I have a question, I know you can’t eat the green potatoes but can you replant them?
Hi. Potatoes need a rest period from harvest to the following spring before planting to grow properly. I’m not sure storing green ones that long would work as they may rot.
Hi, how many seed potatoes were planted per tub please ?
Hi. I put 4 in each tub. There is a video back in March I think of me planting them.
Content of potting mix, please????
good job ! thanks
i just want to know from this harvest can you grow it again and again for years or grow it once after buy seeds again
No you can save the pototoes as seed for next year. Ill be doing a video on this soon.
