I started in IT (Helpdesk) in 2001. Worked my ass off, making ~$32k. Built up my reputation and networked a lot within the company. Got on supporting senior Executives and got a huge raise. Took on projects and things outside of normal break fix. Became an technical PM and now make > 4x's what I did 15yrs ago. Bottom line: Work hard, always do more than what is expected , look for opportunities to do things outside of your normal job and build your network.
Simple answer is from 30K to 1 Million Help Desk 30-40K Junior positions 40-60K Senior positions 60-100K Managers and Consultants 100-150K Directors and Experts 150-250K Elites and Unicorns 250-500K Bug Bounty Hunters 50K-1M+
I started out as a entry level tech, making about 26k a year. Now with certifications and experience, I started working as a IT Support Engineer making about 45k so far so good. Time and experience plays a big role on getting a better job, you just have to be patient.
Going to college for computer science is a good idea. Most people who have A+ make between 25-36k, really depends on your location and you will get pay entry level if you have 0 experience. You won't get hired, unless you have some kind of experience. You can work your way up and get experience or you can go to college and do both. This is entirely up to you and what you like to do. I don't have a college degree with computer science, but I have a degree in Criminal Justice. It really various on the person and what they like to do.
I would start with comptia A+ and move my way up to network+ because this gives you a strong background on hardware and networking. Comptia A+ now requires you to know linux, mac, and windows for the exam. While network+ requires you to know switches, routers, subnetting, servers, etc. I would move over to Microsoft once you have those two certs. College degree and certs and experience will bump you up to a decent salary. I would study certs and do some volunteer work because you need to get your foot in the door in a IT job. No one will take you unless you have at least 1 year of experience. Some people get lucky and find a job after college or after getting A+. It really depends how well you do on a interview.
In the Denver Area, starting IT is around 40K-50K. Denver has a pretty healthy IT market if you're looking for a job. There's plenty of jobs that are 75K+ if you have more experience.
Im currently a filed tech and make 40k but just got another job as a level ll technician and I was able to negotiate to 54k. I'm currently 26 with an Associates degree and almost done with my Bachelors if that matters or not.
Thats awesome. Congrats! Can you tell me where you're located geographically so people who see this can get an idea of different locations and their pay scales?
+jganer thank you. Always great to hear from people in the south(warmer weather) makes moving so much more appealing. What does your day to day look like?
+I.T. Career Questions Don't want to give out to much information but I work for the education system in which I'm in charge of three locations. +jganer no problem, I completely understand! I loved working in the educational sector. I worked for a few different school districts and have enjoyed them thoroughly. 21 years old here. No bachelors. Just only associate. No certs. I get paid 20 and it’s full time job. Level 1 help desk. I have 2 years of experience in IT. And two other years in being familiar with computers and jobs that have to do with computer but not actual IT jobs.
It varies even within company...I've seen admins who know nothing about IT make 55k and it analysts make 50k...I've also seen it analysts make 80k+ w a couple years experience all in same company.
I make $62k a year as an engineer in a NOC. I have no degree at all. BUT I am limited in jobs that I can get. For that reason, I am still going for a B.S. in IT. I'm tired of working in LA.
Hi I need a quick answer. I believe 100% that programmers don't make even 5% of the money they claim they make because every time I look at those who make games, they are weak. Games are not a necessity and I don't even know who pays so much for them to have those high salaries. I would like to be a programmer but these realities prevent me. What do you say I'm right? Is scheduling a lie?
A single person living in California is considered "low income" if they make less than $58,450 per year. Amazing! But I agree! Hell, my rent here in San Diego is $2000/month in my 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment! I pay $24,000 in rent per month.
Love that you are from Chicago as I'm from Chicago as well. I'm getting a masters in psychology (behavior psychology) and want to go into IT. What jobs do you think would fit this? I've only worked as a BA for a health insurance company working with IT.
You’re in Chicago that made me a subscriber I’m in Chicago and lost in terms of a career I’m in technology field for low voltage but not passionate about it
I work at a small chemical sales / production company as a delivery driver. I'm going to school for hospitality but don't care for it and I think once i get my Bachelors i'd like to get started in IT. What would the first step be? Taking classes at a community college?
I'm in the DFW area ...In the I.T. field. Fairly young in the field but have experience. Would you recommend staying in DFW or moving to Austin? Just looking for as many job opportunities as possible. Both are big cities. I have a college degree but not in anything pertaining to IT. So, I've been adding certs to my arsenal. Any advice you have will be greatly appreciated. Take care.
Net question that I havent seen anyone asked yet and i'm surprised about is the average hours you work a week. Do you still only work 40 at most? a typical work work for an hourly employee is 40 hours a week and any more gains overtime pay. When getting into IT some positions except entry level ones appear to be salary based. With a salary based pay do you still get overtime and if so how do they determine overtime pay? how do they determine if you qualify for overtime pay? I had heard with some salaried employees from other business that you need to make under a certain amount to qualify for over time pay as well. Could you share info about this with us?
So 35k is almost twice as much as I've ever made. So I'm in I'm signing up for a Comptia program and going to start working towards an AS in computer science as a starting goal. I'm 24 and have barely anything to show for it. This seems like the path I need to take get my shit together.
How much I'm I likely to make with a masters in information systems, management of information systems? And what are the kind of jobs I am likely to get?
I'm currently a senior pursuing my bachelors in computer engineering. Also, I work for the same university in the network department. I have experience and am confident with many tasks such as pulling cable, configuring ports, WAP, and switches and also know my way through linux. By the time I graduate I will have 2 years of experience in the computer network field. One of my professors that used to work for the navy told me that with my skills and the fact that I will have a bachelors, I shouldn't accept nothing less than a 55,000 year salary. How true is this? Also, I forgot to mention that I want to be a Network admin.
Thank you so much for responding. I am appreciative of your insight and for your videos as well. I guess I'm just having a hard time believing I can start off at so much (to me anyways lol).
Damian Marin how long did you work for before pursuing your bachelors in comp Eng. Also how well are you or how are you managing working and studying an engineering course load. I plan on taking a similar path but I'm definitely curious.
+I.T. Career Questions very thanks to you But I need to know that if I completed Bachelor's of Information Technology (4 years) how much can u earn per year?
I'm managing to study I.T in the university in the future .. and then I saw ur video about the salary and I'm surprised.. so is it good to study this jop in American or somewhere else and go work in Qatar or in Dubai or something like that ?
I have been working and I too for the past 4 years and I started out first in 2013 as a field technician with a subcontract company compucom working with Pfizer I worked there for 2 years and my salary for those two years was 32000 I currently unemployed with Cigna still working under compucom for 26000 I live in Connecticut and no I do not have a degree and I did not pass my A+ certification either but I know if I had either one or even both of those things I would still make the same amount of money I asked around it's Market that depends on how much a person makes and wages have been going down in America for decades
What I love is how I know I was right and was smarter than many managers and Engineers above me some of them I think and I've noticed that they've had a bit of a grudge on me in my time at Pfizer and at signal but I still work there because I guess you know I was right
Salary is going to be heavily dependent on where you live. I am in the D.C. area, I make around double what I made in Vegas when I lived there. However, the cost of living is insane in the D.C. area so it really does all depend on where you live.
+racewartickets4sale if you didn't see I answered your question here: ruclips.net/video/HujIFx0gBjg/видео.html I'm pretty sure this is the second question I've asked from you. Keep them coming! And thank you
Network engineer salary with 1 year experience ? With Cisco certification... B.ENG ( HONS) COMPUTER NETWORK B.ENG(HONS)SOFTWARE B.ENG(HONS) ELECTRONIC & COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING I HAVE 3 DEGREE
Dude I just landed a job at a managed service provider company. Almost a 70% increase in pay, No certs, no school, just a GED lol I really sold myself. Maybe switching tracks to microsoft certs before going back to cisco. I'll see what will help me excel with the company once Im in there. I know its possible to make six figures with them. Thanks for the videos! Keep up the good work.
Whilst IT can be quite lucrative its not as glamorous nor does it have the high flying salaries that some large companies and Universities will have you believe. For example, a friend and I who were in grammar school together in Ireland both attended the same University. My friend chose Computer Science and I chose Medicine. Approx 15 years later and that friend is still with the same company. He spends around 35/40 hours per week slumped in front of a computer screen and over the past 15 years he has seen a salary increase of around £10,000! (British Pounds). In medicine no two days are the same, there is great career progression and satisfaction! You are constantly on the move and facing new challenges every day. On weekends we often get together and chat about what happened that week in work. Lets just say his stories are never that exciting. We will always need people to work in the IT sector the same way we need medical professionals. Choose wisely folks!!
+zazen69 Well I've only seen a few places entirely outsource their I.T. department. One of which has already gone back to hiring on full time staff for these positions(within about 3 years time) I've seen some positions outsourced with-in an I.T. department and usually it's cost effective as you aren't paying for insurances and benefits. I don't think here in the U.S. we've seen a HUGE impact on outsourcing I.T. jobs, it has happened though so don't get me wrong. I don't think we'll see what exactly will happen for a few years and what direction the field starts going into. Salaries will be affected and it's mainly up to us(technicians, system admins, network admins) to fight for what you're worth. We'll see how it all plays out.
Shirshak Poudel ha no. engineering is much harder class wise ect and starting pay and mid career Pay is insane. my brother is getting g a guaranteed job as a engineer when he graduates in the spring and his starting pay is around 70k. If you are interested there is computer engineering
Bull fucking shit. A degree helps, yes, but my dad is a computer consultant with no college degree, been in the industry for almost 30 years. He made $700,000 last year. I'm sick of everybody circlejerking about degrees.
No, it does not. People who wonder about how much you can earn do not have 30 years of experience. At a certain point (i would say 8-10 years) the experience crashes the importance of the degree. But for NEWCOMERS into the field the degree is important.
wrong I know ppl that has no degree all certs makes over 100k it all depends on where you look for jobs you must know your worth as a tech lots of agencies will try and low ball you but so far most entry level techs i know make a min of 55k
+Dah Kwan Not too hard. Get some experience either doing volunteer work or with some internships and you'll be golden. Entry level jobs are a lot easier to get into without a degree in general.
thnx for the reply the IT program I'm taking offers 200hrs of externship after completion so i think ill be good.....is there any IT related jobs i can do before then ?
+I.T. Career Questions located in Los Angeles defiantly look into that further down the program(still need more training)......do they pay ? Or is it like an internship ? And what should I expect working/interning at a school district ?
just go to college kids stop fighting over degrees and certifications just go to college to get a bachelor's and then move up to a masters as possible case closed
schools in this country make you think you're going to make mad money and be rolling in dough but the truth is you only make around 20 thousands in most jobs entry level
Damn I became an electrician after studying for like 6 months and make anywhere from $22-$30 an plus per-diem but I'm trying to cross into the IT field
Hey thanks 4 ur video. My name is atul from india I am here to ask u onething that i am from india working 4 it back support with 3 years of experience on it help desk and looking to move or migrate towards canada. Is this workable and I have degree of masters in technology I.e MTech in computer science. Please help and advise me 4 suitable job. Because in india there is not much job opportunities. So advise me. Thanks Atul
Don't go into IT. You need a lot of experience, in order to make a living wage. You also have to a lot of your time and money educating yourself, at your expense in most cases.
This is true with any technical field from programming to IT to engineering if you dont want to keep learning after you finish school then you will end up falling behind.
A lot of people don't. You can meet like minded people at your local unemployment office, soup kitchen, and methadone treatment center. I suggest you pick one and go make some friends!

KevTech what is A+
A+ is an entry level certification from comptia. This certification is typically good to work in a help desk role or desktop support role.
I would start with comptia A+ and move my way up to network+ because this gives you a strong background on hardware and networking. I make pretty much the same money working as a custodian (about 38,000 a year).

There is no job that is just one or the other, but more in depth with software will pay more.

New york long island area pay usually 60k plus for all postions
Choose wisely folks!!
what IT career lets me tele comute as a career? im not very smart so c++ type programming is out of the question xD
YANA World 😂
My stepdad is a system analyst and earns 100k
What effect do you think outsourcing IT jobs has on salary?
Is IT an engineering? Can IT graduates earn more than mechanical, civil or other engineers?
Shirshak Poudel ha no. engineering is much harder class wise ect and starting pay and mid career Pay is insane. my brother is getting g a guaranteed job as a engineer when he graduates in the spring and his starting pay is around 70k. If you are interested there is computer engineering
you have Electromagnetic interference in your camera..
I make 35000 5 years experience a+ n+, ccna, ccent.pass any test or lab they want. always low ball you
Matabei89 No degree no money.
Bull fucking shit. A degree helps, yes, but my dad is a computer consultant with no college degree, been in the industry for almost 30 years. He made $700,000 last year.
I'm sick of everybody circlejerking about degrees.
umh yeah, 30 years of experience, so you can shut up lol
No, it does not.
People who wonder about how much you can earn do not have 30 years of experience.
At a certain point (i would say 8-10 years) the experience crashes the importance of the degree.
But for NEWCOMERS into the field the degree is important.
wrong I know ppl that has no degree all certs makes over 100k it all depends on where you look for jobs you must know your worth as a tech lots of agencies will try and low ball you but so far most entry level techs i know make a min of 55k
in new york a help desk can make 40-50k and a IT sys admin can make well over 100k
but also you pay 2000 a month to live in a shoebox...
If you live in manhattan and theres plenty of places in manhattan for for around $1200-1300 if you live with someone else
How hard is it get an entry level job with out a degree but have certification ?
+Dah Kwan Not too hard. Get some experience either doing volunteer work or with some internships and you'll be golden. Entry level jobs are a lot easier to get into without a degree in general.
thnx for the reply the IT program I'm taking offers 200hrs of externship after completion so i think ill be good.....is there any IT related jobs i can do before then ?
+Dah Kwan Depends on where you are located. A lot of places offer summer help, school districts being one of the big ones.
+I.T. Career Questions located in Los Angeles defiantly look into that further down the program(still need more training)......do they pay ? Or is it like an internship ? And what should I expect working/interning at a school district ?
Sometimes they do pay. What you can expect is mostly a lot of grunt work but it helps pad your resume.
Is there I.T. in japan guys? And how much is the salary there?
Lol
just go to college kids stop fighting over degrees and certifications just go to college to get a bachelor's and then move up to a masters as possible case closed

Plus side to working out there is that it's tax free!!!!!!!!!
I graduated college with a 4 year degree. Entry level help desk Im making 15$ an hour. LOL looks like im getting duped.
that degree is going to help you get the next job though.
This is unbelievable how little IT gets paid.
brett taylor Depends on many different factors
schools in this country make you think you're going to make mad money and be rolling in dough but the truth is you only make around 20 thousands in most jobs entry level
That's not true.

Is that a kufi or a white durag?
Styven August it's a hat on backwards
Don't go into IT. You need a lot of experience, in order to make a living wage. You also have to a lot of your time and money educating yourself, at your expense in most cases.
This is true with any technical field from programming to IT to engineering if you dont want to keep learning after you finish school then you will end up falling behind.
This is literally how every job is.
due-rag?
Jon Dough lol
this salary is enough for me
Subscribed
That’s very disappointing
Sheesh, I think I’m just going to be a cop
Dude, entry-level can be way worse than that. Lol.
Ok, Chicago. Lol. We did Tier III, but totally different location.
55 grand a year dam
I wouldn't get out of bed for those salaries
A lot of people don't. You can meet like minded people at your local unemployment office, soup kitchen, and methadone treatment center. I suggest you pick one and go make some friends!
+Kaiser Sose
no thanks I'm very happy with my high paying salary.
Maybe so but you have no friends.
+Kaiser Sose
sorry to dissapoint you
You don't disappoint me at all. You have a marvelous imagination.
Allah akhbar lol
