I just started this book and am loving it so far. The writing is very rich; writing you can sink into. One phrase Barker keeps using though that throws me out of the story is when he refers to ships as "him" or "he". Ships and cars are always "her". But that is in a patriarchal society, so it makes sense that it would be a masculine reference in a matriarchal society. Still throws me though. Thank you for explaining the set-up of 'the woman that has the most children is strongest'. Now there are things that make more sense.

Yeah, the “he/him” threw me off a little too. But in hindsight I actually really like that nuance. I’m excited to continue on with the series. 😊
