This is a nice upgrade indeed! One of the things I like about the Anthem is you can play with a TON of dynamics. Once in a while in a solo acoustic setting, I'll really dig in and strum like you did in this demo. The Anthem has never sounded clippy and distorted from really driving it. That was my only concern when you mentioned this updated version would be hotter, but I'm very pleased to hear it handled the aggressive strumming just fine!
I have the anthem full installed in a taylor, it is a bit low on output but using the LR Baggs EQ pedal you have a +6db switch, and it has never been a problem. Since you always and mean always need an EQ possibly with LPF and notch, it doesn't really matter if I am using a Martin with its fishman or the taylor with lr baggs, since anyway I need EQ . I suggest to BAGGS owners to get the Baggs EQ pedal, it's really worth the money having volume, plus boost +6 0 -6 db, notch control wonderfully working, eq bands, LPF on 40 80 120hz and last but not least a phase. btw thanks Aaron, as usual you bring us all the news with competence and clarity.
Agree . Having the preamp integrated into the output jack complicates matters. I’m wiring the elements to a stereo jack (3 pole) going into dual source mono or 2 amps
@jameslifetimelearner And what effect does that have? I mean, the dual source mono or the two amps? How do dual mono or 2 amps become stereo? I'm thinking about buying the Anthem tomorrow and ask the Yamaha guitar technician to leave my built-in piezo pickup untouched* and then use both outputs and mix the signals, but it still ain't stereo unless I delay and slightly detune one of the two output signals. *Assuming this is even possible, which it prolly won't be for space reasons.
My Anthem quit in the middle of the song, it was plugged into an Ampero Hotone II Stomp and routed into an SQ5 mixer. I figured the battery died and replaced it, but no luck, its dead as can be! Nothing obviously is wrong with it! No lose cables, no obvious reason why it quit in a guitar, that was bought brand new. The purveyor of the guitar (Emerald Guitars) immediately responded something like "Impossible", refusing to stand by his warranty.
The Maton Ap5 pro is definitely one of the best pickup systems out there. The problem is that you must modify the bridge of your guitar to install it, most of the people need to go to a luthier to do that, and I don't know how many of them are willing to make such modification to their expensive instrument, unless you buy a Maton guitar that already comes with it.
Interesting that the new anthem has a hotter output . I always found the anthem to be a bit quite . I never knew the anthem SL had a bigger output then the regular anthem that’s interesting too

I have a J-45 too and one of the guitars that are really high on my wish list is the LG-2, because it has such a unique voice. But don’t take my word for it. If you have the option to try one out, do it. I for one love these guitars. 😊
I use to have a excellent pedal from the states called a red eye preamp . That sounded great with my previous anthem . But I wore out the preamp as I was playing in all typed of weather when I busked . You can’t buy a red eye in the UK
I use Baggs on all my acoustics, but the anthem can only be used on a couple without cutting into the braces. Most my acoustics will not accept the control unit as it will not clear the bracing around the sound hole.
@@aaronshortmusic Yes, I have the SL version in a couple of my acoustics. Still, too bad the anthem control will not clear the braces on most my guitars. I had to shave braces down on one guitar I was determined to make it work on. Not really complaining, just giving a heads up from a devoted Baggs user.
@@aaronshortmusic true , but in lots of cases (more so live situations) it’s better to not have signal too hot at the source as it can be hard to control live! There should be plenty of gain and volume in Di box and mixing desk. Either way the original baggs is fine for live or home use. Enjoy your videos Aaron great stuff.
I use Anthem SL, set it and forget it, I am curious how others run their volume? I typically run the volume on the pickup around 75-80%, do you recommend or run at 100% volume?
I use Stagepro Anthems in my RainSongs. Set them at 50-50 mic blend, with volume at 90%,(I want a little extra available, just in case the sound man has me too low for certain songs).
I always run at 100% as I use an external boost pedal and I want the strongest signal possible going to the FOH. If I didn’t then I would run at 75% (I do this on my Cole Clark).
The Anthem uses a crossover and the Infinity Blend does not. I did like it but I experienced more feedback than with the Anthem so I would go with that unless you know you need the TRS output on the Fishman.
I’m looking to purchase an anthem next week. Is there another way to distinguish whether or not it is the plus version? I’m not sure I’ll be able to take a look for the plus without opening the package at the store.
I don’t think so. You could ask when they received them but you may have to ask them to open the box and check or you could order one directly from LR Baggs and ask for the + version.
I hate undersaddles... But i like under bridge plate pickups... That's what we should be blending with a mic.... Much less invasive to the natural sound of the guitar.... Sounds a lot better. Needs less Mic signal blended in to sound Really natural. Why do people think it's a good idea to put something between your saddle and your bridge/bridge plate? It's also so much quackier, which I absolutely can't stand. I think even a bridge plate saddle pick up does pretty well.
In general I agree but I always get more feedback issues with the SBT style pickups. The Cole Clark and Maton systems under undersaddle style pickups and they are some of my favorites and are very stable at loud volumes.
@@aaronshortmusic feedback thing is pretty manageable... If you end up needing a little help, SoundHaul plugs and feedback suppression circuits work well.... But usually monitor positioning is enough for most people. And if you're talking about bringing a mic in for blending, You're going to need to be proactive with feedback prevention anyway.
@@ramspencer5492 I can mitigate it but I’d rather not have to think about it. The mic is fine with a Soundhole plug. The Maton, Cole Clark and Anthem systems work best for me at this point and I have tried them all multiple times.

You are hearing the pickup, not the guitar. Do you mean that the pickup sounds ordinary? There’s not many pickup systems that sound better than the Anthem in my experience.
@@aaronshortmusic no, I mean the actual guitar, even when strummed hard it doesn’t seem to have any real resonance to it? I have Anthem fitted to all my acoustics, I’m a fan. What I’m hearing on different 150 Gallagher models I’ve heard it sounds massively overpriced. IMO 🤷🏻♂️
That is true but arguably with the SL you don’t need a ToneDexter as it is a microphone anyway (albeit an internal one). But yes that is a reason I would go for the full version.
