Hi Survivors What are your thoughts on Wellness? I did a poll recently and most people seem to enjoy Wellness, though quite a few either don't understand it or have no idea what it is about. Hopefully this guide will help.
No clue why they thought removing it was better. It was never something you had to think about too much or at all, just eat the best foods you could when you could find them, done. A point per level OTOH, meh, no ups no downs, just statistics based on highly simplistic, so inane, levelling. It's almost like they were expecting to have to make this game concentrate on PvP since that's usually when arbitrary and silly "level playing fields" start to infect a game.
Wellness makes sense, keep your character healthy. I view 7dtd as a PVC (Player versus Computer) game, and since you need to eat anyway it is a way to encourage you to eat more than a stack of boiled meat for every meal.
Wellness is necessary to utilize the cooking and farming mechanics. By level 6 you can make meat stew and yucca smoothies and you basically never need to worry about food again past day 5 in vanilla once your first potatoes and corn grow. The darkness falls system incentivizes you to have a full garden and cook most things to round out your diet and stay beefy. I personally also like a fleshed out self care system in a survival game. Multiple incentives to stay alive never hurt either in the genre.

Like I said in the polls, but just in case I wasn't clear enough and for some new players to this mod I'll put it here. Just like SnowBee demonstrated, there are 3 different qualities of wellness giving foods and drinks. You don't just consume the best food you can to quickly get your wellness up. I'm not saying this this strategy will make you invincible as you can die in quickly in this mod even with 400 hp and regen active. After all there are biological boosts as well which make you even more of a tank imo. Although I do think this layered consumption the best possible. But don't count on that continuing in to the future. Khaine said he and his team will review the wellness mechanics so a part of this video can be made obsolete pretty soon.
Yeah, I was chatting to someone yesterday concerning this. I do think that DF is quite a bit more difficult since A19. For those people that play the game pretty well this buff is certainly something to manipulate and use to make yourself difficult to kill. Though I think for a lot of players they can take all the help they can possibly get at this point. I also do not think Darkness Falls is going to get any easier. Just to clarify, does wellness drop after the food buff ends, or does this permanently raise your wellness level unless something triggers it to drop? From the vid, it appears once it goes up, it stays at that new level unless something triggers it to either go up or down. Is this correct?
Yes, it is permanent. So if you raise your wellness to 120, it is always going to stay at 120 unless you receive a critical hit or die, in which case it will go down. It will go up due to all the food, drink and skill options. If a food buff runs out, it does not effect the permanent value that your wellness has reached.
I think i must have started 7dtd during A18 because I don't recall vanilla wellness and so the concept has always intrigued me but i believe i would like it
Thanks for the video! I have been looking into playing DF and this is very helpful. Have you done a video on the classes and their benefits yet? I would love more info on them if possible. Thanks again!
No, not yet. There are some big changes coming, at least three classes will likely be changing quite a bit. I don't know when they will change, but I didn't want to make class showcase videos and they ended up changing in a month or two.
Thank you for the guide! Could you make a tutorial on foods that give buffs? The candies were removed and some foods have new buffs that I don't fully understand
I haven't done one as the food info is in the DF Discord under the FAQ. I may add it to another guide sometime, just unsure. Didn't want to give info on something that was really just a quick spreadsheet page. Still thanks for the requst, people do ask for it now and then.
@@SnowBee THIS! this was what i was needing to know, which foods and drinks gave 1-5 wellness! ty ty ty for telling me where! checked the discord, now i just need to figure out which ones i need to craft for personal usage
Playing Alpha 21 DF Am not getting my wellness back and I’ve tried all things plus my wellness keep going down. It was 291 and now 245. Thank you for all the content .
Thanks :) Critical hits will decrease your wellness (for example, a concussion), not only death. Two things that prevent you gaining wellness from food or drink are: 1. You are drinking or eating food that does not have a wellness boost. 2. Make sure the buff from the previous item of the same level has run out. So, something with wellness boost 3, could actually be the same level as a wellness boost 4 item. Not easy to always know. Otherwise, there could be some bug, but as you have been boosting already, it is unlikely a bug.
I may have missed it, but how can you tell if your wellness is below your maximum? (eg: 100/110) I often take vitamins at random just to ensure it stays maxed but it would be nice to actually know if it is below the max and by how much. I can vividly recall having a max health and stamina of 65 and wondering what happened until I remembered wellness was a thing. Health Nut upgrades are a good early game investment I think (take more hits and hit back longer), possibly better than Sexy Rex, which burns food faster.
Hiya Steve! :) I don't believe you are told your maximum... at least I have not seen it. I say that as once I hit my maximum I only knew as buffs made no difference. All I can say is your first level is 200, next is 300, and then 400. Within this and what fudges and messes with the values is your Athletics Action Skill. As your athletics continues moving up, so it will slowly add a point or two onto your wellness level every now and then. At one point in my video you will see that I say the max was 200. But if you look what I show it is actually 201. This is due to the fact that I leveled up my athletics action skill a bit... that threw off the numbers slightly.
Yip, vanilla is heading that way. It is going to be VERY interesting to see how they implement the bandits again, and whether that will up the difficulty.
Not having wellness in vanilla makes sense. K.I.S.S. But in DF it’s awesome. It adds depth. It rewards putting in the effort to keep character healthy. It makes the game punishing for people who want to power through and treat it like vanilla. Overall it’s a good system and I like it. In DF. Not vanilla, the kiddy pool needs to stay safe and shallow as it does no one any good to scare people off or make the game frustrated.
hello SnowBee. i was wondering if you knew the nuts and bolts of earning active skill points? is killing a chicken with my bone knife the same blade skill increase as killing a titan with my laser sword? is jumping worth the same athletics as running? those kinds of things. any insight would be very much appreciated, as all your efforts are
I actually haven't looked into it much. I was planning to do some testing and see whether walking or sprinting made a difference, or cutting a tree down versus killing zombies with an axe. You can do some testing yourself. If you click on an action skill, each level shows you how many experience points are required to the next level. So you could sprint a particular distance, then walk the same distance, see if the XP gained is the same or different.
what im unsure if im use a drink with wellnes 3 - do i keep the 3 wellness after the buff expires? i think so right? otherwise there would be no way - get back up after you died multiple times also can someone tell me - what wellness number is actually what quality? like 1-3 = low 4-5 = med 6 = high or however they stages work so - in conclution the best way is use -> the higest low tier -> the higest mid tier -> the highest high tier food and drink for maximum boost/benefit - so in the end you have 6 buffs? so i basicly need a constant supply of 3 foods and 3 drinks....dang......... can any one tell me the one they prefer - cause they are "easy" to get i rly start to regret be the farmer in our first time group DF round XD
Hi To Ba, first don’t panic, it is not as crazy as it may first appear to be. The wellness you get is wellness you keep. It is permanent and only is removed if you die or take critical hits. The buffs run out and the wellness still stays. If you check the DF Discord under the FAQ section there is a list of foods and the points they give. Some will just eat a meat stew now and then and drink something. That means over time your wellness goes up. Just take it slow there is a lot of time in game to make sure you get your wellness up by using only one food. It is more fun making many foods, but just one will do the trick, just take a bit longer.
Are you able to get the wellness back that you may have lost, or is it that if I have lost 50 wellness through death or cuts, broken arm etc., my max possible wellness will be 350/400? If it is a permanent loss, is there any way to change this in the Buff.xml file that you know of? I don't think a cut or abrasion should permanently lower max wellness. From a Steam message board, I found out to remove the 10 wellness subtraction on death. I don't mind a temporary loss of wellness if it can be regained. YMMV Thanks for the video. Subbed.
Hey Fuzzysnuffles The loss is permanent if you don't do anything about it. If your max is 400, it means you can easily get that up by eating various qualities of food and drinking various qualities of liquid. Also vitamins. Some players just down a liquid and food every so often, and take a vitamin when they remember. Make sure the previous quality buff has run out though. Just topping up on an existing buff will should not trigger the extra wellness. Cool nickname :) ... and thanks for the sub :)

I've fully enjoyed how much of the over simplification that has happened to 7days has been reverted in darkness falls. Complexity and depth of in game systems should be embraced but it feels like fun pimps are hell bent on shooting for lowest common denominator design choices. So rather than embracing the systems and making them easier to understand for the players that don't want to learn how they work they instead axe them from the game all together.
I have modded it on my server to deal with the death and injury penalties - it's too easy to get into a loop where they die a few times and now have only half as much health and stamina as they started out making them MUCH more easy to die again - with which is why I think they removed it from vanilla in the first place. Also the death penalty is really more than -10 because you'll likely get infected (-5) or break an arm (-5) or whatever before you die - meaning you can easily get -20 or even worse from a single death. I think encouraging people to make complex foods is good though.
Actually with my testing for this video, even when losing some points prior to death you will see that -10 is all you get when you die. It possibly depends on how long your fight was before you died. For example, in my testing, if I lost 7 points, or if I lost 9 points, and then died. When I resurrected, I had only lost 10 points over all. Your reasoning is correct, I *should* have lost 10+7 or 10+9, but I only would ever lose 10. However, if you lost the 7 points, then stopped fighting, waited for 10 minutes and then you got into another fight and died, then you probably should have lost 10+7 points. I am guessing that as I have not tested this part of the theory. Maybe it could be rounded off to the nearest 10 or to the next 10. So if I lost 11 points, it may take me to 20 points lost once I resurrect, or to the closest 10, being 10. I honestly hope I make sense with that? Try it out and see what happens and give me a shout? However, I will get around to testing it sometime :)
@@SnowBee yeah, but when you die you need to go back to where you died to get your stuff. So the enemies that killed you are still there, but now you have no armour, no meds. and are only armed with the pointy stick you managed to make on the way, and you also have less health and stamina, so the chances of you dying again are pretty high. Rinse, repeat and you're down to 50 before you know it.
@@vampiremonkeyonspeed Hey VMOS, then don’t play with that setting. I used to play with my stuff dropping on death, but then once I started playing co-op with my wife I changed it to nothing dropped on death. I don’t feel any less worthy as that aspect would really annoy my wife and she will not have fun playing. It is not like you have made the zombies weaker or are cheesing. It is just a setting like feral sense, which many leave off. Options to put on or off. Just my two cents, so that hopefully you can have fun without thinking you are switching the AI off. Remember, Darkness Falls is meant to be more difficult, but a lot of people adjust their settings to suite them. It is not like the zombies are now easier to kill. :)
@SnowBee Thank you! I tried asylum in the poi search, but there are not many. I'll see if I can find it, but I'm not sure if I have it. I just have the Darkness Falls mod. I appreciate your reply! 😁
Huh, and here I thought that the highest tier of each consumable type would be the only one to count for the regen/etc. All five( five tiers, right?) do. Time for some meat pizza with spaghetti, and baked tater sides! Carbo loading, babyyyyyyyy!
You would need to look and check which tiers each one is. There are only three tiers, average, good and excellent. So a wellness 3 food could be an average food, while another one set at wellness 2, could also be average. It depends on what Khaine and set them to be.
Hey Robert :) No, you regain your wellness from items like food. So if your maximum wellness has been decreased from critical hits or death, then you will build it back up again. Once it reaches the cap or limit, then it stops increasing.
Well said. I was just watching a video of a vanilla player doing a huge farm, and as much as he was doing it for the sake of being creative, I still thought that it is a pity than vanilla doesn't appreciate food as much.
I played the earlier alphas 18-19. I bought the game in 2016; I never touched it much back then. I remember one time I had my campfire going boiling water and cooking food, and a screamer appeared, and I said to hell with it, let the witch scream. The next thing I knew, 100 zombies appeared to eat my brains. I said then that I liked the idea of 7 days, but I wish it was more balanced with the game stage. I take a break, play other genres, come back, and funpimps cut it all, and now A20 has no challenge. I enjoy DF as it fixes A18-19 with the game stage. I can cook in the early games and not be stalked by screamers. With wellness, It never should have been cut; dying is now pointless in A20.
Hi Sir Giant! :) No, not currently. I have only been establishing myself. I do help people a lot with information and help, and respond to everyone, just have not got around to setting up a server or playing MP yet with people. It is something I wish to do, though possibly likely once I launch a patreon account or similar.
@@SirgiantTtv I tend to hangout currently on the Darkness Falls Discord, though I am on quite a few. You can look me up on that so long, I will likely eventually make my own server. discord.gg/Aycr2Vkf
Wellness is something fairly easy to max out, it just takes time and boom, you have a free 100 extra hp. (plus whatever skills you max out for more) So unless the complaint is that doubling and tripling hp and stamina is bad I dont see the issue. Honestly, its not even something you have to try to do. Eat and drink the basic stuff as you need them and dont die and your wellness goes up automatically. If you really wanted to grind it, you could probably get it to max in a couple of game days just by constantly eating and drinking as soon as the buff for each type vanishes and popping vitamins as well.
Yeah, some have argued it can make the game too easy as it can be easy to max out. However, I don't believe that is the same for everyone. A lot of people struggle with DF due to its difficulty, and A20 has not helped the matter. It is more difficult now. I think good players certainly find it easier with being able to rise up to at least 200 to 300 health & stamina without too much effort. However, for many other players the extra health and stamina is a great way to help them, and it adds depth into to the game without just making it a simple "extra health" system like in vanilla.
@@SnowBee Honestly, I say if it makes the game too easy for you, nudge the difficulty up. Speed up the zombies, increase the horde size. Turn on feral sense, whatever. (Is that in darkness falls? Cant remember) Point being, there are tons of ways to make the game harder, and if you are waltzing through insane nightmare 64 horde feral sense always on zombies at end game, then I dont think the extra health or stamina is whats doing it. :p
when I started my first darkness falls playthrough I began with only 50 health and spawned with nothing, not even the blank class paper. Not sure if this is a bug, but thought I would throw it out there. Almost acts as if I died before the world was even created and I spawned in.
@@SnowBee too late! 5 days in I crafted myself a class paper after looting a crack a book and just decided to roll with it. Looks like what happened was I died 3-4 times when the world was being generated for the first time. I havent actually died once yet but it says ive died 4 times on the player list. bit odd but im still enjoying my playthrough just fine after the bit of a difficult start with no class selection.
@@sethgibowski8695 Yeah, I know Khaine the DF Dev is currently doing a series where he started without a book to choose a class. In this case he threw it away when he started. It was not a bug.
I don't believe that one is in DF. Most are there, but this one I can't find. I see on the FAQ for the DF Discord, they say that if it is not listed, then it is not in DF. However, I know the explosives perk/skill line is very strong, so you get a lot by adding skill points there. In DF, even the molotovs get huge bonuses from those skills.
That is why there are skills to decrease that :) Also, there wouldn't be any reason to get higher end food if the lower end stuff did its job too well. Finally, if you are on Warrior and higher, each difficulty level will increase your food/water consumption. So, if you want a good taste of DF with all the bells and whistles, it is recommended to play on Nomad or Warrior. Good luck :)
i started out in the early days of 7dtd (like single digit alphas). the game felt bland in that area when they took it out. it feels more like a rpg with it than a bland shooter.
Yeah, I never played then. I hear they are also going to change crafting now. I am curious if they are going to remove things there as well for it to be more simple.
@@zerodawn09 I want to laugh, but it is quite annoying. :) They are supposed to go gold sometime and wanted to finish up soon. With massive changes it just leads to more bugs and less time for perfecting their product. Maybe alpha will still be a few more years.

@@SnowBee Thank you for the clarification! Keep up the good work!
Great guide, thank you
Thanks Marcel :)

Well... as much as I don't believe that is correct, I am not going to argue with you 🤪🤪
I think i must have started 7dtd during A18 because I don't recall vanilla wellness and so the concept has always intrigued me but i believe i would like it
Thanks for the video!
@@SnowBee thanks for the info! If you make a video in the future I will be sure to watch it!

It was 291 and now 245.
Thank you for all the content

Thanks :)
Critical hits will decrease your wellness (for example, a concussion), not only death.
Two things that prevent you gaining wellness from food or drink are:
@@SnowBee yeah it was bug
thank you for reply brother.
Thank you for this. I was confused over how to increase my wellness as it is currently at 68 😂
Yeah it is an important feature. Quite easy to use once you know how it functions. :)
Hiya Steve! :)
I don't believe you are told your maximum... at least I have not seen it.
Great and informational video as always.
A few more iterations of simplifications and we'd get Idle zombie killing game :D
Haha, direct and to the point :)
Thank you
hello SnowBee. i was wondering if you knew the nuts and bolts of earning active skill points? is killing a chicken with my bone knife the same blade skill increase as killing a titan with my laser sword? is jumping worth the same athletics as running? those kinds of things. any insight would be very much appreciated, as all your efforts are
I actually haven't looked into it much. I was planning to do some testing and see whether walking or sprinting made a difference, or cutting a tree down versus killing zombies with an axe. You can do some testing yourself. If you click on an action skill, each level shows you how many experience points are required to the next level. So you could sprint a particular distance, then walk the same distance, see if the XP gained is the same or different.

what im unsure
if im use a drink with wellnes 3 - do i keep the 3 wellness after the buff expires? i think so right? otherwise there would be no way - get back up after you died multiple times
also
can someone tell me - what wellness number is actually what quality?
like
1-3 = low
4-5 = med
6 = high
or however they stages work
so - in conclution the best way is
use
-> the higest low tier
-> the higest mid tier
-> the highest high tier
food and drink for maximum boost/benefit - so in the end you have 6 buffs?
so i basicly need a constant supply of 3 foods and 3 drinks....dang.........
can any one tell me the one they prefer - cause they are "easy" to get
i rly start to regret be the farmer in our first time group DF round XD
YMMV
Thanks for the video. Subbed.
Hey Fuzzysnuffles
The loss is permanent if you don't do anything about it.
Cool nickname :)
... and thanks for the sub :)
@@SnowBee - Thanks for the quick reply! Good to know it is a temporary thing that can be brought back up to max with food and drink.
Bring on the wellness

Yes, there have been a few similar questions :)
Unsure when I will get around to it.
Does anyone know the name of that POI at the end of the video with the tower? Looks like a great base idea :).
Hi Xaveris, If I recall it was some kind of asylum. It may not be named as such, but it was part of the old Compo Pack POI"s.
@@SnowBee Oh, well how about that. Oki, thank you!
So ...once you die, you can with some crerativity regain all your lost wellness, OR do you lose it perma once you die never to get to the max again?
Hey Robert :)
No, you regain your wellness from items like food. So if your maximum wellness has been decreased from critical hits or death, then you will build it back up again. Once it reaches the cap or limit, then it stops increasing.
@@SnowBee thank you again sir
I prefer wellness because it gives value to food
Well said.
super helpful, thank you for all these guides. Will you be doing a complete playthrough? would be interesting to see how veterans play this mod
Hopefully, if I get the time and working on my next game to also start looking at for guides.

Hmm, yeah, especially no class paper, that is strange. Definitely I would start again or reinstall and start again.
Hi which food gives atom junky buffs in darkness falls?
I don't believe that one is in DF. Most are there, but this one I can't find. I see on the FAQ for the DF Discord, they say that if it is not listed, then it is not in DF. However, I know the explosives perk/skill line is very strong, so you get a lot by adding skill points there. In DF, even the molotovs get huge bonuses from those skills.
@@SnowBee thank you.
Much prefer the DF wellness to the direction TFP are taking the game mechanic.
Agreed. A deeper game that makes food useful and provides another incentive to not die. :)
i love this modpack but it feels like a foodsimulator you eat and 5 mins later you have to eat again
That is why there are skills to decrease that :)
Also, there wouldn't be any reason to get higher end food if the lower end stuff did its job too well.
Finally, if you are on Warrior and higher, each difficulty level will increase your food/water consumption. So, if you want a good taste of DF with all the bells and whistles, it is recommended to play on Nomad or Warrior.
Good luck :)
I feel like gounging out my eyes if I see CAN or NOT one more time from khaine
Hi Nekousagi, sorry I don't understand your comment?
i started out in the early days of 7dtd (like single digit alphas). the game felt bland in that area when they took it out. it feels more like a rpg with it than a bland shooter.
Yeah, I never played then. I hear they are also going to change crafting now. I am curious if they are going to remove things there as well for it to be more simple.

They are supposed to go gold sometime and wanted to finish up soon. With massive changes it just leads to more bugs and less time for perfecting their product. Maybe alpha will still be a few more years.
